The visit took place in connection with the 7th UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. UNEA is the highest political decision-making body for environmental issues and brings together representatives of all member states. The Queen participated in UNEA in her capacity as patron of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
In addition, the Queen conducted a field visit to the Kilifi region with a focus on biodiversity, climate adaptation and improved living conditions for the local population. The strong Danish-Kenyan partnership in the green area is based, among other things, on the Danish government's Africa Strategy.
On the first day of the trip, the Queen visited Arabuko Sokoke Forest, which is East Africa's largest coastal forest. Here, the WWF World Wildlife Fund, which also has the Queen as patron, works, among other things, with the development of nature-based businesses within beekeeping, butterfly farming and ecotourism.
The Queen also visited an area of mangrove forest, which both stores CO2 and at the same time improves coastal protection and thus local climate adaptation.
The second day of the visit took place in Nairobi, where The Queen visited Kenya's largest landfill, Dandora. During the visit, The Queen met female waste collectors, who provided insight into the dilemmas associated with the transition to a circular economy. The waste collectors have, among other things, received Danish-funded training in entrepreneurship, which will enable them to create alternative income opportunities.
Subsequently, The Queen participated in the high-level segment of UNEA together with high-ranking representatives from 60 countries, where Her Majesty gave an opening speech on the importance of biodiversity and nature conservation for human health. The purpose of the high-level segment is, among other things, to bring member states and important stakeholders together to discuss concrete initiatives that can promote biodiversity and health.
The Queen also participated, together with the Minister for the Environment and Minister for Gender Equality Magnus Heunicke, in a meeting with the President of Kenya, H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto.
