Queen Margrethe's 75th Birthday Celebrations: April 2015

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
:previous:Ooops, thanks for correcting me on the Luxembourg couple. Let's hope that they will attend this year also, in spite of the 60th birthday. Preferably with Guillaume and charming Stéphanie in tow.

It would clearly make my day to see Queen Mathilde with the fleuron tiara of late Queen Paola. My hopes are not high though. You may call me a pessimist:cool:.

I dont really care what birthday year it is that they are celebrating to be honest. I am just glad that they are celebrating big, royals attending and having fun. How fun is that for royal watchers.

I know a few people who don't like to celebrate their birthdays or make it a big deal. I won't be surprised if some royals are that way as well.

Norwegian royals will be attending, thats great! I just hope that the Spanish King and Queen attend, Friday seems a long way to know.

I'm glad that the attendance of the Belgian King and Queen has been announced. Although I had hope that Albert and Paola might also attend. They are the same generation as Queen Margrethe and have known each other for ages.
I'm under the impression that Albert and Paola don't seem to like these royal festivities all that much since they skipped so many of them. They weren't scheduled to attend QMII's 70th birthday celebrations, they didn't attend the 70th birthday celebrations of Harald and Sonja, they missed the silver wedding celebrations of their nephew GD Henri, etc.

And I too would like to see Mathilde with Fabiola's tiara but it would be even more exciting if she would turn up with a really long lost piece like Q Astrid's Stockholm wedding tiara worn as brooch to fix her sash. Unlikely I know but it would absolutely make my day.

Will it be 3 tiara Events?
We don't yet know for sure, Josefine. I think that there will be two tiara events: the dinners on the 15th and 16th. Tomorrow there will be concert in Aarhus, but I don't think that there will be tiaras.

The 75th is a big birthday! It's three quarters of a century. I perfectly understand why QMII wants to celebrate that. And as for Henrik... well, however much he wants to be, he's not the king and the rules that apply for QMII don't necessarily apply for him. I must say though, I thoroughly appreciate that for his birthday concert/gala/thing last year, he prioritised "inviting" (well, you had to pay but you know) the public rather than acquaintances. That was a nice touch that he didn't get enough credit for.

How lovely that Philippe and Mathilde will attend even though it's on Philippe's birthday – perhaps they prioritised QMII's birthday because they snubbed us of an introductory visit? (I am still moderately offended by that, I don't know if that's obvious :D)

I'm so stoked to see if the BRF will send someone and, if so, who.

Might it be Charles & Camilla who represent the BRF?

Edward and Sophie often represent the BRF at such events although I think for the Queen's 70th birthday the Duke of Edinburgh was going to attend before the volcano stopped flights.
I'd like to point out I'm glad Margrethe is having such a big birthday (and my previous post wasn't a criticism) so we get to see all the royals partying, I was just wondering about how/if there were talks between Margrethe and Henri as both have big birthdays to celebrate.

Edit - Philip, Edward and Anne all have events scheduled for the 16th April

16.04.2015 Queen Margrethe 75 Their Royal Highnesses The Crown Prince and Crown Princess attend the 75th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe of Denmark, Copenhagen."

Sonja will be in NY

Oooooh....More and more confirmations. Can't wait!!

Especially as my Aunt Robbie passed away after a long illness yesterday and she would have loved all this. She was such a Royalty fan and I'm more than a wee bit green w/envy that she's one up on the rest of us right now knowing what Kate's Baby is. :D

Any news on the Swedish Attendees? I'm assuming no Queen Silvia due to ongoing issues w/her recovery from her ski accident.

Any news on the Swedish Attendees? I'm assuming no Queen Silvia due to ongoing issues w/her recovery from her ski accident.

It has been for many weeks at the calendar of the swedish royal court, that the king and queen attend on 15th April, and the king, the queen, crown princess Victoria and prince Daniel on 16th April.

Right, people from all over the country, even as far as the island of Bornholm, is gathering in Aarhus right now to cheer QMII when she's going through Aarhus and later many will be standing outside the Music Hall to see the royals arrive.
TV2 will cover the whole thing practically non-stop all day. DR1 won't, presumably they will deal with the celebrations around QMII's birthday.
That means that is will be most unlikely that you can watch anything live outside DK, but instead there will be smaller video clips posted later somewhere on the TV2 site.

Personally I'm in Aarhus too right now, waiting to attend a meeting, and in about an hour or so I'll try and find a spot along the route. The weather is fine, overcast but dry.

The show today consists of a carriage ride through a considerable part of downtown Aarhus escorted by the Guards Hussars.
The whole thing ends at Aarhus townhall, where there will be a balcony appearance and with a little bit of luck the whole family will join QMII on the balcony.

Later on there will be a gala show at the Music Hall and during the intermission QMII will "gå kur", i.e. she will walk through the public corridors at the Music Hall trying to greet as many as possible, that will also be shown live. And again with a little bit of luck the rest of the DRF will follow her around.

The Queen's sisters aren't listed for today's events, does anyone think they will still show up? It would disappointing if they don't.

The other Skandinavian Royals arrived by car and ferry, but Queen Silvia did not make it in time for the theatre gala. But she was seen at the reception after the gala.

Queen Silvia and the Kind actually arrived a bit earlier. They arrived so they attended the reception in the break and the following second part of the performance.

The Regent couple have just appeared on the City Hall's balcony:

A screenshot of Margrethe and Henrik on the balcony.
The couple came out alone on the balcony to start (then M&F and then J&M) About 5000 people turned up. Margrethe in her white robe from her 70th birthday.

As TV2's reporter also told it was remarkable how huge an applause the Crown Prince Couple recieved when they came out on the balcony. Must make Margrethe proud.
Also noticed F&M took each other's hands, I guess they remembered back at their last time on the balcony after their wedding.

Margrethe's sister weren't there.

Well, I was in Aarhus today and I saw the giraffe (DK idiom for something novel). More on that later.

Here are some trivia:

QMII got as a birthday present from the municipality of Aarhus a brooch. It will apparently by known as the Aarhus-brooch it consists of a large gemstone in the center circled by eight brilliants symbolizing her grandchildren. Three yellow for the girls and five blue for the boys - with room for more stones if need be...
The brooch is inspired by the distinctive railings around the trees at the town hall square. Mary received a similar brooch some years ago.

The vast majority of the Guards Hussars today were women. The members of the mounted squadron are 100 % volunteer conscripts and there is a waiting list for a couple of years, despite the service being considerably longer than for ordinary hussar conscripts, i.e. twelve months.
It takes some six months to train a recruit to being able to ride escort. Being able to ride is a must even to apply, then there is boot camp followed by mounted military training before finally being allowed to ride escort. The large number of women is due to the popularity of riding among girls here in DK.

I took up position at Clemens Bridge, right next to a TV-camera in fact and they passed close, very close. I wouldn't even have had to stretch out my arm to touch the PET officers. PH looked in fine shape, QMII, well you can tell she isn't a spring chicken anymore. No eye contact though as they passed.
They continued down to the major square in front of the cathedral. Feared by Mrs. Muhler when we go on a date in Aarhus (this is the restaurant area) as the cobbled stones there are absolutely lethal to anyone in high heels, or just any shoes for that matter...! Not so for the horses, they've got four legs...
After they'd passed I walked up to the square in front of the town hall, but there were already loads of people there, including my in-laws who had secured a good spot. Standing way back I couldn't see a hoot of the arrival, but I saw the DRF appear on the balcony. It's lower than at Amalienborg (or Copenhagen Townhall) and people are closer.
When the show was over my in-laws went to a nearby building to secure some free coffee and pastry, while I passed the line of Guards Hussars who were surrounded by onlookers, children, pensioners, tourists and horse enthusiasts and people were issued carrots to feed the horses, who were fed and petted and looked like they thoroughly enjoyed the attention! Some of the hussars held glasses in their hands, I think it was schnapps. (Probably to keep them warm, a prudent precaution, methinks).

The weather was great, a bit chilly and a bit windy, but dry and the mood was fine. - In the characteristic subdued Jutlandic way. We are enthusiastic, oh yes, but with both feet glued firmly to the ground.

I've had a number of text messages from my mother-in-law, she and my father-in-law are still in Aarhus, but they had a great view (probably secured by elbowing away a few children and handicapped... :p) of the arrival with the Regent Couple passing right past their noses. She says the arrival of M&F caused a loud cheer. They are both very popular in Aarhus. Frederik because he spend a couple of years in Aarhus and Mary, because she's Mary.
I told my M-i-L to write an account here if she is in the mood, so perhaps she will.

Oh, I didn't take any pics. When the Regent Couple are to pass within a couple of meters from me, I'm not going to start looking at them through a mobile.

That's confirmed. The four oldest grandchildren will attend. That's why the entertainment is also aimed at them.

ADDED.
The coverage starts up again in three hours from now, with first the guests arriving at the Concert Hall and finally the DRF and from then on the coverage is non stop until closing time.

This particular pastry is called a "kagekone" = Pastry-madam" it's a must to birthday parties for smaller children, when it's a girl's birthday. When it's a boy it's a "kagemand" = Pastry-man. - It's a sweet pastry formed like a human with icing and various forms of sweets and candy as decoration. This one was for QMII and served at the reception.

The local kindergartens were out in force and ensured they got a place in the front row. And of course a paper-crown is a must when you are going to look at the royals.

And for QMII, she also happens to be daughter of the mayor.

The town hall is BTW way pretty unique. It was finished in 1941 and build in funkis style. Here is a better view: http://www.emu.dk/sites/default/files/aj_aarhus.jpg

Even the arch-Copenhagner tabloid BT has a gallery, albeit a bit late... Se billederne: Dronningen blev hyldet i Aarhus | www.bt.dk

Se billederne: Dronningen blev hyldet i Aarhus | www.bt.dk The police enjoy the royal shows, if not for other reasons than they get to wear the more distinguished looking cap (kasket) with white cover. Rather than the more practical but not nearly as police-like baseball caps they use on a daily basis.
This is incidentally from Clemens Bridge and the photographer must have stood almost where I stood.

That is one seriously beautiful picture, eh?

It looks like a great time. Its great to see the warm welcome the DRF and F&M received.

the Queen looks fantastic, all three ladies looked wonderful and of course, handsome Frederik with his warm smile

He has actually. Back around 1990 IRRC. He commanded the colour guard who surrounds the estandart. (The smaller cavalry version of a colour). http://www.denstoredanske.dk/@api/deki/files/8505/=334012.501.jpg
As such he rode behind the carriage.

ADDED: The municipality served free pastry and coffee for the locals, right next to the town hall sqaure and that was popular! My in-laws were there as well: http://www.tv2oj.dk/artikel/251573:Aarhus--Gratis-kager-blev-revet-vaek

A video summary of the carriage ride: http://www.tv2oj.dk/artikel/251579:Aarhus--Regentpar-kOerte-gennem-Aarhus
Notice that the carriage is ridden, rather than driven. The purpose being that people should be able to better see the royals, so a coachman who would obscure the view was less desirable. And that was back in 1864. Nowadays it's something the TV-networks and photographers really appreciate.

Lovely pictures from today. QMII looked happy, which is always nice, and Mary looked absolutely riveting. I love her outfit today and the hat is just on point. I'm so psyched for tonight – despite the show being sent on TV2 :D

It's a bit odd that they've been removed from there, isn't it? Anyway, BB usually have it right so I suppose we'll have to trust them.

Just watching the news. QMII pulled her son's leg lovingly while giving her improvised thank you speech.

QMII studied in Aarhus for a couple of years in the early 60's, while Frederik studied for five years. She said: "... I got to know the city, albeit not in such depth as the Crown Prince, who used several years... to complete his study".
He did actually complete two lines of study but he was indeed a very familiar sight in the Aarhus nightlife at the time. Yet, very few details ever hit the press. Partly because the press respected his privacy and partly because the locals left him alone.

How sweet of the Queen. thank you for adding these details that is non-danes would miss
Im glad that Frederik was left alone. and that the sight of a college age man partying didnt shock anyone :ROFLMAO:

It was in 1992 and the occasion was the silver anniversary of QMII and Prince Consort :) And it was not only CP Frederik, who rode behind the carriage, also Prince Joachim rode there.
It was a surprise to their parents - or so it was told :whistling::p

:previous: Thanks FasterB :flowers:

Daily Mail: Princess Mary goes classic in dress belted at the waist and black millinery to celebrate*75th Birthday of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark | Daily Mail Online
Notice in the top picture, how Frederik elegantly maintains his balance by burying his hands in his pockets. The gravity field in Aarhus can be treacherous...

ADDED: TV2 continue to send live and now the some 1.200 guests are seen arriving. Black tie (I think it's called) and evening dresses, but no big gala-robes though.

The weather is perfect and sunny. A photographers dream, because the ladies dresses are now hidden behind coats and umbrellas.

The dress code for officers is the mess uniform. Medals are worn.

The guests are not surprisingly one big list of who's who in Jutland and Funen.

Countess Alexandra with her unshaved Martin is there.

So is the PM, Helle Thorning. She dressed like C3PO, you know they gay-bot from Star Wars. What a novel idea...
C3PO looked better... and more feminine... and more modest too...

ADDED: Joachim, our Marie and NIkolai and Felix are arriving, all four look stylish.

M&F are arriving. Christian in black tie. Mother and daughter look very stylish.
Ah, both Mary and Bella will get flowers.
That's a seriously sweet scene! The flowergirl to present flowers to Bella, needed a little push. And Bella needed a "eh, what to do now, mom"? When the flowers was presented to Bella, the four year old flowergirl remained where she was and looked fascinated at Bella, so she needed another push to move on...

QMII is on her way. This time in a car, but slowly as they are escorted by Guards Hussars. An honor guard from the Royal Lifeguard is lined up in front of the concert hall.

ADDED: Good grief they are showing the PM again! How come the word vulgar suddenly popped up in my mind?
