Princess Stéphanie of Monaco married Daniel Ducruet, her bodyguard at the time, in a civil ceremony in Monaco on July 1, 1995. She divorced him on October 4, 1996.
They have two children together, born before their marriage: Louis and Pauline Ducruet.

So sad how this marriage ended in such a sordid way.
Apparently there was a prenup agreement Daniel signed concerning relinquishing the custody of the children.

Generally messy everything else aside, I think the dress looks nice on Stephanie and she looks nice — I’m not used to seeing her with longer hair.

Why did Princess Stéphanie and Daniel Ducruet get married in a civil ceremony? Because he had already been married?

In Monaco you HAVE to have a civil ceremony first before any religious service. Think back to Princess Grace's marriage: a civil ceremony first, followed on a subsequent day by the cathedral service.

But Princess Stéphanie never had a religious wedding, I think. Right?

A religious ceremony is NOT necessary in Monaco - only the civil ceremony is compulsory. Some people do not want a religious service - sometimes because of personal preference, sometimes because divorce (for example) makes is not possible. Think back to Princess Caroline - when she married for the second time, she had not [at that stage] secured a religious annulment of her first wedding [to Junot] and therefore only had the legally required civil ceremony.

The Catholic Church would most likely have not allowed a religious wedding as Ducret was divorced and the two children born to Stephanie were born out of wedlock.
Also, I think Rainier, who could be very indulgent to his daughter, probably mindful of the recent trauma for Stephanie of being in the accident in which she lost her mother, would have not wanted a big public occasion which would have sparked more controversy had a religious ceremony been sought by the Princely family.
