Prince Hisahito's coming-of-age ceremonies will be held September 6-10, during his summer break. Ceremonies are modeled after the coming-of-age of Emperor Naruhito (Prince Hiro, 1980) and Crown Prince Akishino (Prince Aya, 1985).

September 6:
  • 8:45am: receive kanmuri from Emperor's messenger at Akishino residence
  • 10am: wear minor attire to receive crown at "Kakan-no-Gi" ceremony at Imperial Palace's Shunju-no-Ma (grand hall), change into adult attire, take carriage to worship at Imperial Palace Sanctuaries
  • 2pm: change into western attire for Choken-no-Gi ceremony (audience) with Their Majesties at Imperial Palace's Matsu-no-Ma (state room), receive Order of the Chrysanthemum at Omote-gozasyo (where the Emperor performs his official public duties. This wing also has waiting rooms for Palace staff)
  • 3pm: receive congratulatory remarks from IHA grand steward and other senior officials, visit Sento Imperial residence to greet Emeritus couple
  • evening: Crown Prince Akishino couple will host private banquet in Tokyo for Imperial family, former royals and relatives
September 8: Ise Grand Shrine in Mie Prefecture, Mausoleum of Emperor Jimmu in Nara Prefecture
September 9: Mausoleum of Emperor Showa at Musashi Imperial Graveyard in Hachioji, Tokyo
September 10: Prince Hisahito will host luncheon in Tokyo for Prime Minister, Speakers of both Houses of the Diet, Supreme Court Chief Justice, members of Imperial Household Council, members of Imperial Household Economic Council

Prince Hisahito will wear new attire but accessories such as the 檜扇 (hiougi) fan and 空頂黒幘 (kucho-kosachu?) black cap, worn before receiving the "Kakan-no-Gi" ceremony, will be reused from his father after alterations/repairs. New clothing and private events will be paid from Akishino family's expenses.

How lovely to read that former royals will attend the private dinner in the evening. Hopefully not only his aunt and her husband but also his eldest sister and husband will be included.

:previous: I hope Mako and Kei Komuro will attend but it's suspected they will not due to their newborn and lingering marriage scandal. Their presence may distract from or overshadow Prince Hisahito's milestone.

Correction via Mainichi: Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko will host the September 10 luncheon for the Prime Minister, members of government, etc.

The banquets for Emperor Naruhito (then-Prince Hiro) and Crown Prince Akishino (then-Prince Aya) in 1980 and 1985 were public events and held at the Imperial Palace. Prince Hisahito's private banquet and public luncheon will be held at private facilities because it's inappropriate for an Imperial branch family to host at the Imperial Palace, according to the Imperial Household Agency.

I guess Emperor Hirohito hosted his grandsons' banquets since those were at the Imperial Palace. If Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko hosted, then the banquets should have been at their residence Togu Palace.

On August 8th, Prince Hisahito arrived at the Imperial Palace around 9:30am to rehearse his coming-of-age ceremonies.

On August 27th, the Imperial Household Agency displayed Ceremonial Carriage No. 4 to the press ahead of Prince Hisahito's Coming-of-Age ceremony on September 6. He will use it to travel from the Imperial Palace to the Three Palace Sanctuaries.

Carriage No. 4 was used for the Coming-of-Age ceremonies of Crown Prince Akishino (Prince Aya, 1985) and Prince Hitachi (Prince Yoshi, 1955). It is normally used to convey new Ambassadors for their Credential Presentation ceremonies at the Imperial Palace. The carriage is pulled by 2 horses, seats 4 people, is 4.51 meters long, 1.9 meters wide, 2.24 meters high, and weighs about 1 ton. The exterior has the Imperial chrysanthemum crest in maki-e (lacquerware) and the interior is decorated with a paulownia arabesque pattern. It was manufactured in Japan in 1913.

Mako and Kei Komuro will not attend Prince Hisahito's Coming-of-Age. They were invited to the ceremony and related events but declined, citing the long distance from New York, USA and their newborn. According to aides, the Komuros hope to find an opportunity to spend some quality time with the Akishino family at some point.

Prince Hitachi will be absent from the Imperial family.

Prince Hisahito is commuting from Tokyo with some stays at an apartment near campus. He is enjoying a fulfilling university life in academics and sports, making new friends, etc. He takes the required First Year Seminars, as well as classes in English, information literacy, basic biology experiments, introduction to molecular and cell biology, and introduction to genetics. Hisahito conducts experiments and field surveys for the basic biology experiments class.

Participation in university events include Spring Sports Day, where he played dodgeball with friends from the Department of Biology, and the dormitory festival, where he joined friends selling mini-castella cakes.

Although time at the Akishino residence is now limited, Prince Hisahito continues to cultivate vegetables and rice, as well as studying dragonflies and other living creatures at Akasaka Estate. Spring semester ended in early August and he has been preparing for the Coming of Age ceremonies: watching videos of past ceremonies, listening to speeches from his father, attending briefings from experts on formal attire.

Prince Hisahito departed from the Akishino residence at approximately 8:55 a.m. for the Imperial Palace. He was accompanied by his parents, Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko, and his sister, Princess Kako.

Prince Hisahito traveled from the Akishino residence in Akasaka Estate to the Imperial Palace for his Coming-of-Age ceremonies.

Though they did so for the coming of age ceremony for his father who then rode in the same carriage as his son did yesterday.

How appropriate that after the emperor encouraged him to focus on his studies that the empress recommended him to look after his wealth.

An incident during Princess Kako's official visit to Brazil in June. Fellow passengers were surprised a princess took a commercial flight from Campinas to Campo Grande and then someone recorded her sleeping.

Agency irked at video of princess sleeping during flight in Brazil | The Asahi Shimbun
Video footage of Princess Kako snoozing during a recent flight in Brazil left the Imperial Household Agency fuming and asking what possible interest is served by such a blatant intrusion into her privacy.

Naomasa Yoshida, the grand master of the crown prince’s household at the agency, said at a June 13 news conference, “In general, it is not desirable to have videos taken without permission during an individual’s private moments.”

[...] The agency disclosed June 13 that it had asked the operator of X, formerly known as Twitter, to look into whether the video violated the company’s guidelines...
