The Precious Coral Biology Research Unit conducts fundamental research programs to understand the essential life processes of red coral and contribute to the protection of this iconic Mediterranean species.
Exploited for millennia, the red coral skeleton has been used for jewelry, medicine, and religious ornamentation. Today, it is threatened by overfishing, human-caused pollution, and global warming. Its extremely slow growth makes it a natural treasure that must be preserved. An emblematic species of the Mediterranean, it constitutes the keystone of the coralligenous ecosystem, home to nearly 20% of the known marine species of this sea.
CHANEL Joaillerie, along with the Monaco Scientific Center, supports research programs aimed at better understanding the growth mechanisms of this animal and the formation of its distinctive color, and which enable the development of innovative solutions to contribute to the conservation of this species.
