Princess Ariane, News and Events Part 1 (May 2023 - present)

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Today, the graduation ceremony of Princess Ariane took place, having completed her International Baccalaureate exams at the United World College Adriatic. Exam results are expected in early July.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima were present.

As expected her parents were able to celebrate with her after their travels to other continents earlier this week.

Not sure what she is holding in her hand as it cannot be her diploma given that the results of the exam aren’t in yet…

The question now of course is what her next step will be. My guess is that she’ll take a gap year just like her sisters did.

Well, they don’t just call the graduates up on stage and give them nothing, so it’s presumably the same thing Leonor and her sister received (something like an acknowledgement of completion of the program), even if it’s not the IB result.

curious as to why ariane attended the italian UWC campus as opposed to the welsh one like her dad and alexia...

Students don't choose they apply in. general and the committee selects.Yes Sofia ended up same as her sister but not a given. One factor is special study interests. Certain campuses have stronger focuses.

This particular UWC has a strong focus on music, which is most likely why Ariane preferred to go here rather than to Wales. In the mean time, she also learned Italian (and might have taken classes in other languages spoken in the region) - not sure whether that was something that she was interested in in particular but that's another feature of UWC Adriatic.

If it was me the better weather would also be a factor 😉.

Congratulations to Ariane! I’m sure her parents feel very proud. On a day like this they are not King and Queen, just a mum and dad celebrating their child!

I see! I didn’t know this and thought they applied to the college of choice.

As part of the selection process, applicants are asked to indicate their college of preference. If they apply through the 'Global Selection Programme' you will only be assigned to one of the schools that you include in your application. If you apply through a National Committee, you may be assigned to any school but they do take your order of preference into account. So, applicants/students are not randomly assigned.

From their website (bold is mine):
2. Keep your options open

This only applies to those applying through the Global Selection Programme.

Numbers of places available through the Global Selection Programme are strictly limited in each school. You can maximise your chance of being offered a place by declaring your interest in more than one school. You can list the schools that you’re interested in attending on your application form. We encourage you to choose up to four UWC schools that you would like to attend.

If you're applying through your national committee, you won't be able to select the school to apply to but you do have the opportunity to tell us the order of preference for the schools that you'd most like to attend.

See the difference between applying through the Global Selection Programme and applying through the national committees.

Congratulations to Princess Ariane on her Graduation and her proud parents too !

Here are more photos of Princess Ariane during her graduation ceremony at UWC Adriatic.

She hasn't graduated yet; like all UWC students, she will only get the results of her exams in about a month...

I’m not sure what system you’re working from, but in cases like these and many others, you graduate when you complete the program and when the school says you do; that’s why they call it graduation.

The results aren’t relevant; if someone fails their IB they take it again, not return to high school. They are done.

I wonder if the owner of the instagram account will be asked to delete these photos.

My understanding is that the school doesn’t call it a graduation but a farewell ceremony.

Edit: UWC calls it a closing ceremony, see for example: here

And from an educational perspective you need to successfully complete a program to graduate, which means you need to have successfully passed your exam(s). As only in that case you’ll have access to the next level of education. That’s why graduation rates are a relevant metric to assess education quality.

UWC Adriatic posted the entire Closing Ceremony on YouTube (the musical bit is around 1h10 and the a-cappella around 1h30):
