Pieter Christiaan spoke to gossip magazine 'Story', where he denied supposed rumours that his marriage is in trouble.

According to a 'source at the court' of the magazine, the marriage is in problems as the prince only shows up in public with his daughter. The prince spoke to the journalist in question and said he was happy he was approached as the rumours were 'pertinent nonsense, we are happily married '.

How likely is it that Karin Riethoven's "usually well-informed" source would say what they did without evidence? I am not familiar with her reliability.

The prince apparently did not deny that he rarely appears in public with his wife. Perhaps he felt it was not important enough to deny, or perhaps that part is true, even if it is for some reason unrelated to his marriage.

Story is a gossip magazine that very few people would take seriously.

From the start of their marriage, Anita clearly has been uncomfortable with the public part of being married to Pieter-Christiaan. Nonetheless, they’ve been able to make it work for 20 years.

Thanks. Could you elaborate on what you mean by Anita clearly being uncomfortable with the public part? Has she been absent from public royal family events over the years, or complained about press coverage?

She has been absent for most of Pieter-Christiaan's public activities (including, for example, the Holland 100) and from early on seems to avoid the media as much as possible; unlike her husband who leads a more public life (more than most of his brothers; so that also contributes to the picture of her being less comfortable in the spotlights - in comparison to him). She does not engage with the media, so never complained about it either. However, she does attend one yearly official royal event: Koningsdag (imho it would raise lots of questions if she decided to skip) - although she was absent in 2018 due to illness.

It is a struggle one imagines to be in the public eye although they have been successful thus far and to be frank, publicity I imagine is a fickle beast. Below is an article from Libelle providing more context to some of the comments about the couple's attitude towards the media.

Context to the Anita Comments

Prince Pieter-Christiaan as one of the Ambassadors of the Friends of Sophia Foundation, accompanied by Princess Anita, attended the annual charity gala for the foundation yesterday, December 13:

Thanks! So it has been this way since the beginning of their marriage.

In the Libelle article posted by @Luc122 it is mentioned that while Princess Anita’s official bio describes her as an “independent entrepreneur”, it is unknown what her business actually is. That seems unusual for a royal spouse or even an entrepreneur (most entrepreneurs try to publicize their businesses...), so I suppose it is another indicator of her strong desire for privacy. I wonder how she has managed to keep her business secret for so many years.

One spouse being highly social and enjoying the limelight while the other spouse is reclusive and protective of their privacy is a dynamic that has strained other royal marriages, but hopefully Prince Pieter-Christiaan and Princess Anita continue to make it work for them.
