Nothing in the above is concerning imho. He tried to balance both perspectives on the nitrogen crisis (showing lots of sympathy for the farmers but still acknowledging the political reality that something must be done. The government and especially PM has been very outspoken about Ukraine and the gender comments were rather neutral imho.

It will be interesting how he would move forward if the current 4 parties end up reaching an agreement because on some issues their views are more extreme and less likely to align with the king’s personal convictions.

Support for a Republic has increased on last years 25%

Regarding the preferred form of government:
Monarchy: 52%
Republic: 37% (and if so, preferably the German version; not the one in which lots of power is vested in the president - like an 'elected king' with the powers from the past)

An opnion piece in the Volkskrant by sociologist Mark van Ostaijen of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam.

The title says: 'If the monarchy wants to survive it needs to value its unusualness more'.

He is holding a plea for a more distant monarchy and thinks that at the moment they want to be 'as normal as possible', which undermines the position of the King. He aknowledges that it is a tricky balace: being close to the people but at the same time distant enough to safeguard its symbolic position. As an example he mentions the RF being involved in everyday things such as real estate (Bernhard), start ups (Constantijn) and fashion (Eloise).

A curious point of view for a left wing newspaper perhaps. He even mentions the fact that the RF marries outside of the nobility. And the personal tastes of the King -> Armin van Buuren over the national Ballet, the Grand Prix in Zandvoort over a Concours Hippique) and the King not minding people using his first name instead of saying 'Majesty'.

Many people expect Amalia to be more Beatrixarian just like Willem-Alexander is more like his grandmother. Although I am not so sure about them being as encouraging about people using their first name - they will not go against it if the people they meet use it incidentally but their court and others regularly working with them speak about ‘the majesties’ to refer to them.

Good news for the Dutch Royal Family! For the first time since the controversial trip to Greece in 2020, support for the Dutch monarchy has increased. Support for the monarchy increased from 52 to 59%.

Support for a republic also fell from 37 to 31 %.

P.Amalia usually gets good comments when she particpates in an official event, i wouldn't be surprised if her being more visible helps.
Also, the political parties in the NL at the moment don't really give a very reliable vibe imo, so i think if we wouldn't have a monarch, many of us couldn't imagine one of the politicians being head of state, so that helps too :flowers:

The other poll numbers from the article:

King Willem-Alexander’s support has risen from 53% last year to 57% this year.
Queen Máxima’s support has risen from 55% last year to 59% this year.
Confidence in the crown princess has risen from 47% last year to 59% this year.
Last year 50% believed she had the ability to be queen, this year it is 61%.

The yearly survey regarding the Dutch royal family showed an increase in support for the monarchy (+5% - up to 62%) and trust in the main figures (king, queen, princess of Orange). All got a higher 'grade' this year and showed an increase in trust (king: 6.9 (from 6.6) - 51% (from 44%) trust; princess of Orange 7.3 (from 7.0); queen 7.5 (from 7.3) - 58% trust (from 56%).

Impressions of Amalia:
"Kind, intelligent young lady"
"Competent and involved"
"Amalia understands her role really well"
"Modest, but people-oriented"
"Smart aunt, who accepts her historic role" ('smart aunt' is a Dutch expression)
"She seems increasingly at ease during her tasks"
"Smart and motivated"
"She tries very hard to be able to carry her responsibility"
"Closer to the people than the king"
"Works hard to succeed her father as well as possible in the future"
"A serious and involved lady who radiates pride and affection"
"A princess like her grandmother. A natural and aware of her role."

The Poll figures are positive and thankfully a turn around after the past few years.
