It’s good to read of the slight but notable improvements in Pope Francis’s health. He has had a long period as Pontiff which must have been quite stressful at times. Pope Francis appears to be a man who wishes to do his duty to the end. I’m just wondering whether a period of complete rest, relaxation, a life without any worry, might be the way to go from now on. In other words retirement.
The Pope has a long road ahead and has had multiple health issues over the past few years but I don't think he will step down as Pontiff.

This has been suggested by quite a few people lately. His age makes it unlikely he will regain his former vigor, and there is precedent for him to step down.

An update on Pope Francis' health:
Last night, Pope Francis did not require mechanical ventilation. This was one of the updates shared by the Holy See Press Office with journalists on Tuesday evening, 18 March, regarding the Pope’s health condition.

As Pope Francis himself has repeatedly denied that he has any plans to leave the papacy before his death, i find a retirement unlikely (though i’m sure everyone will understand if he would change his mind after this ongoing health scare is over)

There is precedent in both directions that provingly worked for the vatican… With Pope Benedict XVI for stepping down because of health reasons, and with Pope John Paul II for continuing despite having health reasons to step down and during the last years needing help with basically everything…

They will likely go through with Francis what he still can do after he is discharged, and what he cannot do anymore and is going to need help with, and come up with a plan after that…

He has said that you govern the church with your head and not with your legs, so i think he will try his best to continue if he finds it possible…

To mark the 12th Year of his Papacy ,Pope Francis donated his US Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Cathedral treasury of Buenos Aires.
The Presidential Medal with Distinction was given to Pope Francis by US President Joe Biden

This afternoon a new update on Pope Francis' health was released.
“The Holy Father's clinical condition is confirmed to be improving. The Holy Father has suspended non-invasive mechanical ventilation and also has less need of high-flow oxygen therapy. Motor and respiratory physiotherapy is continuing to make progress.”

“This morning, on the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, the Holy Father concelebrated Mass.”

The Pope's doctors have said that his lung infections are under control, although not eliminated. The values of his clinical analyses are in the normal range, and the Pope continues to be fever-free.

He spent his day receiving treatment, praying, and doing some work. No decision has yet been made regarding who will preside over liturgies during Holy Week.

Since the Pope's condition is stable, the next update on his health is expected no earlier than next week. The Holy See Press Office will give some general information to journalists on Friday, and again on Monday.

The Vatican said Pope Francis plans to make his first public appearance in five weeks on Sunday, offering a blessing from the window of his room at Rome's Agostino Gemelli University Hospital, where he has been hospitalized since mid-February.

Pope Francis to be discharged from hospital on Sunday.
Pope Francis will be discharged from Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Hospital on Sunday and he will return to his residence in the Vatican to continue his convalescence.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday evening, Doctor Sergio Alfieri, head of the Gemelli Hospital medical team that has been treating the Pope for an acute respiratory tract infection and bilateral pneumonia said “The good news the world and everyone is waiting for is that tomorrow the Holy Father will be discharged. Tomorrow he will return to Santa Marta.”

Doctor Alfieri, flanked by the Pope’s personal physician, Doctor Sergio Carbone, explained that the decision to discharge the Pope follows steady and rapid medical improvements in his clinical condition and the lifting of the prognosis.

I must say I was moved to see the images of the Pope today. He looks very frail, of course, but I'm glad he's back to the Vatican. His convalescence, in Casa Santa Marta, is expected to last around 2 months according to Italian news outlets.

His breathing appeared stilted, which is only to be expected.

It pains me to say so but perhaps given his ailing health it is time to consider a successor - these are difficult times and I pray he pulls through but if worse comes to worse we must have a Pontiff to lead us

An interesting interview to the Pope's doctor, Sergio Alfieri, by Il Corriere della Sera:
Sergio Alfieri, il medico di Papa Francesco: «La situazione era persa: è avvenuto comeun miracolo. L'istante più brutto, poi ha offerto la pizza. Ha la testa di un 50enne»

He says, among other things, that at some point during his hospital stay the situation was desperate, and it's a bit of a miracle that he's still alive. The worst moment was in the afternoon/evening of February 28th. The Pope's life was in immediate danger. The doctors had to decide whether to stop medical treatment and "let him go" or to continue therapy. They chose the latter. The Pope was always alert and he was therefore aware of the seriousness of his conditions.

I sometimes wonder if it really is good for him to meet so many people ? 🤔 I get that he wants to live as normal as possible (who wouldn’t) and we are in the most important week of the year for the church… But he is also clearly very fragile, and a new infection would not do him any good

Pope Francis seems to indomitable and won't let ill health slow him down or to be seen in public.

The pontiff is dedicated to his sacred duty but I wonder if there is some thoughts to limit his interactions with the public given his condition?
