This was the best verdict that the court could come to, under today's penal system. Yes, he might be satisfied with being found sane, but so is the majority of Norwegians and the families of the victims. Surely, their satisfaction with this verdict is far more important than his. It was important to us that he could be held responsible for his actions and be punished for them, not to be excused by mental illness and freed from all responsibility with an insanity verdict. His life in psychiatric ward would also have been a lot more lenient than his life in prison. 21 years imprisonment is just a formality, he will spend many decades in jail, most likely for the rest of his life.
