Norway's National Day, May 17: 2003 - 2025

I like that in Norway not only the women but also the men wear traditional attire (unlike their neighbors in Sweden).

She also has the Askerbunad she got for her confirmation, Asker is where Skaugum is situated:
She has worn this during the first covid national day:

When she born she got Vest Agder bunads for her whole life, where her mother is from, she has worn atleast two as a child but I dont think we have seen her with a grown up version yet

For her 18th her grandmother gave her bunad from Rogaland. Like she has and Mette-Marits first, she has not worn it:

And from Oslo she got an Oslo suit which is not really a bunad, not worn yet.

So she has plenty to choose from….

Thank you Annine; that’s informative! Which one is the one she wore at Skaugum this year? It’s very pretty.

That was the Numedalsbunad from the municipality where their wintercabin is situated, they gifted it for her 18th birthday, I did not mention it in the previous post, she wore it with the hat when the mayor and seamstress came to deliver it at the palace last year.

I guess in the future she will primarely wear it when visiting the Numedal area.

I predict the Telemark bunad she got from the King and Queen, and the Asker bunad from where she lives and will live when she is crown princess will be the ones we see most often.

Sonja has several bunads she only wears when visiting that specific part of the country. She preffers her two bunads from Telemark.

Seeing Ingrid in uniform for national day was supprising, though not without presedent because the King also did the years he was educated in the army. I do wonder how much she will wear uniforms when she is crown princess, if she will wear it for state council and opening of the Stortinget where her father always wears uniform, or if she will choose a suit/dress.

King Frederik said during the state visit she enjoyed and found military life exciting even if it was hard.

The Children's Parade in Oslo

The King and Queen, The Crown Prince and Crown Princess, and Princess Ingrid Alexandra greet the children's procession in Oslo from the Palace balcony (10.30).

It looks like Sverre Magnus will not take part, the week prior he will attend a Europa League semi-final game with Mette-Marit (May 8)

Interesting that Magnus is skipping the National Day celebration. It is still rather unclear what he is doing and what his plans for the future are (but that's for another thread).

Some men do even here in Sweden… But the use of folk costume / Bunad is much more common in the norwegian culture and society than it is here…

Most people in the younger generation here views it as a masquerade costume or something old people wears (with exceptions ofcourse)

They have updated the calendar for national day, which again rather clumsy pr. Why anounce the plans for national day before they know who is going to attend, we know what their plans is for this day. Then the fact that he was going to the soccergame which is a historic Norwegian soccer game reaching a semifinale in Europe would have been only positive and signal he will attend the odd thing here and there.

Constitution Day

Their Majesties The King and Queen, Their Royal Highnesses The Crown Prince and Crown Princess, Her Royal Highness Princess Ingrid Alexandra and His Highness Prince Sverre Magnus greet the children's parade in Oslo from the palace balcony (10:30).

The celebrations at Skaugum has started. Haakon in his bunad from Asker, Mette-Marit from Rogaland, Ingrid in her new bunad from Målselv and Sverre Magnus in his bunad from Telemark

Ingrid looks beautiful in her new bunad. IMO nothing suits her better that bunads. Maybe because they are made for her and not her mother🫣
The mayor of Målselv is very happy and proud.

It's a great joy I have to say. We had hoped that she would wear it, so it was fun to see that she was wearing it, says Mayor of Målselv Municipality Martin Nymo.

The family this morning, enjoying the children's parade in Asker/Skaugum.

And with King Harald and Queen Sonja on the balcony later.

And Märtha Louise's National Day greeting:

Happy birthday!! 🇳🇴🇳🇴I'm so proud that we live in a country that celebrates Constitution Day with a children's parade and a marching band, and not a military parade - I think we're the only country that does just that. Where we celebrate freedom and peace. Happy May 17th.

Good to see that, contrary to earlier communication, Sverre Magnus was present as well!

Apart from that I think it would be quite difficult to explain to a 8, 10 or 12 year old lad why his elder sister is allowed with their family to celebrate this important day on the Palace balcony while he is not...!:ermm:
And I think one cannot say these days "Well, Magnus, your sister is, as you know, the heiress to the throne while you are not; that´s why Ingrid is with us on the balcony and you can´t be!" :whistling::eek:

They seem to have managed to explain it to Marius when he was an 8, 10 or 12 year old lad.

But to your question: I think the King decided that Sverre (despite not being a member of the Royal House) was to appear on the balcony until he marries. - Why? Because that has been the case for all other unmarried children of the monarch/heir, and the King didn't want to change that (at least, that's what some commentators have said about it).

To be more specific, I think it was the royal author Tor Bomann-Larsen who said it in a TV-interview (very serious guy BTW).
Wibecke Lie, former royal reporter at NTB (Norwegian News Agency) said something similar, if I remember correctly.

Well, in addition to being inconsistent with the King’s decision that Magnus would be born without Royal House membership (instead of being treated exactly like his aunt and great-aunts and having his membership revoked as an adult), the decision to keep Magnus on the balcony until marriage will also open the door to claims that the King disapproves of Magnus’s spouse, because why else would he remove Magnus from the balcony right after he gets married.

And Märtha Louise's National Day greeting:

Apparently Princess Märtha Louise believes that militaries which do participate in national-day parades are not celebrating (and fighting for) freedom and peace...
