This was not a real ceremony as the church cannot hold religious weddings and there was no officiant
They had their civil wedding in January. Prince Frederik therefore lived to see his sister and BIL get married.

I am confused...not a real ceremony with no officiant?
So what were they doing there?
Similar to Charles and Camilla having their ceremony in Windsor, just a blessing.

They were legally married in Switzerland so her brother could attend before he died. They had planned a proper wedding, but then her brother was dying, they did a quick civil ceremony so he could be there. They kept the original plans, and was just more a religious commitment. The wedding they had intended to begin with, just none of the legal side required as it was already done in January.

I am confused as well. Many people in continental Europe have both a civil ceremony and a church ceremony (including the Luxembourgian grand ducal family). While the civil one is the legal one, the religious one is more meaningful for most and considered a wedding as well. In fact, in the Catholic tradition, the church one is considered most important as it is binding for life (no divorce possible).

For those coming from a tradition where the legal part is included in the church wedding, this might be a new phenomenon but it is very common (and even required) in countries that practice a separation of church and state - including in this matter.

The situation in the case of Charles and Camilla is different as they would normally have gotten married in the church (as is British custom) but opted for a different ceremony because of their past divorces.

I believe @MarleneKoenig's point was that the second wedding ceremony was not a church (Christian) wedding (or blessing), as there were no Christian clergy present, even though it was held in a church building.

Anna-Livia Guggenberg von Riedhofen (n.1997) [daugther of the Arhduchess Maria Cristina of Austria and Clemens Guggenberg von Riedhofen] got married to Count Johann Wenzel von Wilczek (b.1996) [ Count Hans Cristian von Wilcezk and Countness Katarina Von Hartig] 22, june-2025

If it was held in a church building, it was by definition a church wedding. And assuming that the church in question was a Catholic one, if there were no clergy present it wasn't even a valid wedding/ blessing according to canon law.

The whole affair sounds really confusing. 🤔

Correct - perhaps just vows to each followed by a party. Charlotte's husband may not be Christian, so a RC wedding would have been difficult.
