Today's Royal French Anniversary is Marguerite d'Angoulême,Queen of Navarre who died on December 21st,1549.Marguerite was the sister of Francois I and wife of Henri II of Navarre,she was also the mother of Jeanne d'Albret.

Marguerite was born at Angoulême the eldest child of Charles,Count of Angoulême (a French Royal Prince) and Louise of Savoy.

Following the death of her first husband Charles IV, Duke of Alençon,Comte d'Armagnac & Rodez,Marguerite retained possession of some of her husbands titles and lands whilst the duchy of Alençon was merged with the French crown.

Charles IV of Alencon's 2 surviving sisters,Françoise d'Alençon, Duchesse Vendôme & of Longueville and Anne d'Alençon,Dame La Guerche and Marquise of Montferrat did receive some personal property but were cheated out the duchy of Alençon.

Was Marguerite d’Angoulême secretly a Protestant ?

She protected several reformers and was interested in Reform of the Church but did not agree with iconoclasm and vandalism of churches ,she received her last rites from a Friar and died a Catholic.

Perhaps had she lived long she may have become a Huguenot like her strong willed daughter Jeanne III of Navarre.Though no one would know if she was secretly Protestant.

Marguerite d'Angoulême's first husband was Charles de Valois, Duc d'Alençon whom she married in 1509.
Charles was the First Prince of the Blood and was in line to the French Throne as he descended from
Philippe III.
The marriage was childless and following his death in 1525 ,the king granted this lands and titles to his widow Marguerite and after her death they reverted to the Crown.
The duke had 2 surviving sisters who were dispossessed of their inheritance in favour of their sister in law.
