Louis XIV first came to Versailles in October 1641,he was the Dauphin at the time and he was sent there by his father as there was a smallpox outbreak in Paris.
The next documented visit to the Hunting Lodge came in 1651 when the king was accompanied by his mother Queen Anne ,brother and Cardinal Mazarin .
In 1661 he ordered work to begin on enlarging the Hunting Lodge and this continued over the next 50 years of his reign.
At Versailles he could keep an eye on the nobility and never forgot they way the poor treated his mother Queen Anne endured during her Regency.

Louis XIV planned to add a large burial chapel to the rear of St Denis in honour of the House of Bourbon .
The project was ambitious and architects were drawing up plans but it was sadly dropped after 1695 as too costly!
