I can't find any concrete answer to your question. However, Prince Aloys was 54 years old when he renounced his rights to the throne in favor of his son. Prince Franz Josef II started his reign 15 years later which would've put Aloys at close to 70 years of age. We may never know.

Prince Josef Wenzel I was the eldest son of Prince Philip Erasmus and Princess Christina Theresa, née Countess von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort.

He mainly devoted his life to a successful military career, reaching the high ranks of field marshal and generalissimo in Italy in 1745 and of General Chief Commander in Hungary eight years later; he also served as ambassador of the Holy Roman Emperor to the Kingdom of France and as Imperial envoy in Berlin.

According to his biographies, he reigned the principality three times: the first time between 1712 and 1718, as heir to Prince Johann Adam I, being succeeded by his uncle Anton Florian; the second time between 1732 and 1745, as regent for the minor Prince Johann Nepomuk Karl (grandson of Prince Anton Florian); and the third time from 1748 to 1772, as successor to Prince Johann Nepomuk Karl.

Does anyone know why he reigned the first time, and therefore how did his succession to Prince Johann Adam I happen?
I wonder that, because his uncle Prince Anton Florian was the older brother of his father, and therefore he should have succeded to Prince Johann Adam I in 1712, as his nearest male relative (as shown in this genealogical table, from the website of the Princely Family). Why was Prince Anton Florian skipped in 1712?

Has anyone heard of Marie Fox? Apparently, she was an foundling from France. Her mother left her and the identity of her father is an ongoing mystery. She was adopted by a British noble couple and eventually married Prince Louis of Liechtenstein. Judging by the Wikipedia photograph of her (bought by Queen Victoria and now owned by Queen Elizabeth II), she was rather pretty. Does anyone know more about her?

I can tell a bit more about her daughters. Three of the eldest (Sophie, Henriette and Julie) had no children but the youngest married Franz, Graf von Meran and had six children with him. Franz was the son of Franz Ludwig, Count von Meran who was the son of Archduke Johann Baptist of Austria, himself son of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor and Infanta Maria Louisa (daughter of King Charles III of Spain). Their children were:

I read somewhere that after a word got out that the Marquis de Montaign was her father, he wrote to the newspaper to publicly deny it. Reportedly, her mother died in childbirth and the Marquis resented the baby, so he left her in an orphanage. His denial of the rumour caused quite a stir back then.

Incidentally, Marie and Prince Alois are also direct ancestors of the politician Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg. His wife is Stephanie von Bismarck-Schonhausen, a great-great-granddaughter of Otto von Bismarck.

Aloys II, born Aloys Maria Josef Johann Baptista Joachim Philipp Nerius (25/26 May 1796 – 12 November 1858)
Aloys married Countess Franziska Kinsky of Wchinitz and Tettau (Vienna, 8 August 1813 – Vienna, 5 February 1881) on 8 August 1831 in Vienna. They had 11 children; nine daughters and two sons:

• Princess Marie Franziska de Paula Theresia Josepha (Vienna, 20 September 1834 – Vienna, 1 December 1909), married in Vienna on 29 October 1860 Ferdinand Graf von Trauttmansdorff-Weinsberg (Vienna, 27 June 1825 – Schloss Friedau, 12 December 1896), and had issue.
• Princess Carolina Maria Josepha Walpurgis Nestoria (Vienna, 27 February 1836 – Vienna, 28 March 1885), married in Vienna on 3 June 1855 Alexander Fürst von Schönburg-Hartenstein (Vienna, 5 March 1826 – Vienna, 1 October 1896), and had issue.
• Princess Sophie Marie Gabriele Pia (Vienna, 11 July 1837 – Schloss Fischhorn, 25 September 1899), married in Vienna on 4 May 1863 as his second wife Charles, 6th Prince of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg (Haid, 21 May 1834 – Köln, 8 November 1921), 1,067th Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Austria, and had issue.
  Princess Sophie's descendants include Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg.
• Princess Aloysia Maria Gabriela Hyppolita (Eisgrub, 13 August 1838 – Vienna, 17 April 1920), married in Vienna on 22 May 1864 Heinrich Graf von Fünfkirchen (Schloss Fünfkirchen, 25 January 1830 – Vienna, 2 January 1885), without issue.
• Princess Ida Maria Lamberta Theresia Franziska de Paula (Eisgrub, 17 September 1839 – Libejic, 4 August 1921), married in Vienna on 4 June 1857 Adolf Joseph 8te Fürst zu Schwarzenberg (Vienna, 18 March 1832 – Libejic, 5 October 1914), 1,092nd Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Austria, and had issue.

• Princess Franziska Xaveria Maria David (Vienna, 30 December 1841 – Vienna, 13 May 1858)
• Princess Henriette Maria Norberta (Schloss Liechtenstein bei Mödling, 6 June 1843 – Schloss Frauenthal, 24 December 1931), married in Vienna on 26 April 1865 her first cousin Prince Alfred of Liechtenstein (1842–1907), and had issue, which eventually inherited the Principality by male line.
• Princess Anna Maria Francisca de Paula Leandra (Vienna, 26 February 1846 – Prague, 22 April 1924), married in Vienna on 22 May 1864 Georg Christian, Prince of Lobkowicz (Vienna, 14 March 1835 – Prague, 22 December 1908), 1,145th Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Austria, and had issue.
• Princess Therese Maria Josepha Martha (Schloss Liechtenstein, 28 July 1850 – Munich, 13 March 1938), married in Vienna on 12 April 1882 Prince Arnulf of Bavaria (Munich, 6 July 1852 – Venice, 12 November 1907), 1,035th Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Austria, and had issue, now extinct.
• Franz I, Prince of Liechtenstein (1853–1938)

Johann II (Johann Maria Franz Placidus; 5 October 1840 – 11 February 1929)
He never married or had any children, like several other members of his family.
Upon his death in 1929, Johann II was succeeded by his brother Franz I.

Franz I, Prince of Liechtenstein, born Franz de Paula Maria Karl August (28 August 1853 – 25 July 1938)
He fell in love with Elisabeth von Gutmann, a widow who had converted to Roman Catholicism from Judaism in 1899, but his brother Johann disapproved of the relationship and refused to consent to it. In 1919, he secretly married Gutmann in Salzberg and remarried her following Johann's death on 22 July 1929.
They didn't have children.

Franz Joseph II (Franz Josef Maria Aloys Alfred Karl Johannes Heinrich Michael Georg Ignaz Benediktus Gerhardus Majella; 16 August 1906 – 13 November 1989)
On 7 March 1943, at St. Florin's in Vaduz, Franz Joseph II married Countess Georgina of Wilczek (24 October 1921 – 18 October 1989). They had five children, twelve grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren:

• Hans-Adam II, Prince of Liechtenstein (14 February 1945, Zürich) he married Countess Marie Aglaë of Wchinitz and Tettau on 30 July 1967. They have four children and fifteen grandchildren.
  
• Prince Philipp of Liechtenstein (19 August 1946, Zürich) he married Isabelle de l'Arbre de Malander on 11 September 1971. They have three sons and four grandchildren.
  • • Prince Alexander Wilhelm Hans Adam of Liechtenstein (19 May 1972, Basel). Married civilly in Vaduz on 24 January 2003 and religiously in Salzburg on 8 February 2003 Miss Astrid Barbara Kohl (13 September 1968, Regensburg), daughter of Theodor Kohl and wife Ingrid Schlechta. They have one daughter:
    • • Princess Theodora Alexandra Isabella Antonia Nora Marie of Liechtenstein (20 November 2004, Chêne-Bougeries, Geneva, Switzerland), founder of the Green Teen Team wildlife project.
    • Prince Wenzeslaus of Liechtenstein (12 May 1974, Uccle).
    • Prince Rudolf Ferdinand of Liechtenstein (b. Uccle, 7 September 1975). Married in Istanbul on 20 April 2012 Miss Ilhan Tılsım Tanberk (20 July 1974, Istanbul), daughter of Olgun Tanberk and wife Melek Kampulat. They have three children:

As far as it is known only the Fürst and the Hereditary Princely Couple live at Vaduz Castle. Have als read somewhere that it divided in appartements.

Think the others children of the Fürst live abroad probably in Germany or Austria.

I think only Prince Hans-Adam II, Prince Alois, Princess Sophie and their children live in Castle Vaduz.
