This morning, April 17, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima opened the National King's Games at the Basisschool KPO De Vlindertuin in Roosendaal:

A little more background information: the Koningsdagspelen (King's Day Games) were early this year as the 'May holiday' starts right after Easter this time (so, this time it ends up being an April holiday). Like other years, Willem-Alexander and Máxima joined in on the fun - this time Roosendaal was chosen for the official opening; several professional ice skaters and other celebrities also joined the king and queen for this event.

The Republican society will not be presentt to protest at King's Day this year.

Instead they are launching a campaign to use the costs of the monarchy -according to their calculations 345 million EUR per year- to organise the 'biggest party ever'. Note that the official costs are 58,9 million EUR per year, but the anti-monarchists calculate it differently, and for example include loss tax income due to tax benifits for the King. What the society forgets to mention is that a republic costs money too.

In previous years they would be protesting along the route. The chairman says that because of that an impression was created that they do not llike a party, which he hopes to correct.

The society has the reputation of elderly gentlemen in tweed jackets, sitting in an armchair and smoking cigars by the fire place. We will see if the rebranding will be effective. I doubt it will be. An earlier campaign of 2021 to 'Free Amalia' went by largely unnoticed. In 2013 the group had 2800 members, which probably will have declined.

Doetinchem, the Achterhoek, and Gelderland have shown here how you can create such a fantastic King’s Day through collaboration, coexistence, and connection. Let’s hold onto that, let’s do it every day of the year.” - King Willem-Alexander

And Bernhard has shared a great photo:

It was nice the broadcast started with a recorded message of the King about the pope Francis.

The newspapers seem rather lyrical about Pss Amalia. more so than otherwise. And Máxima and Alexia seemed more on the backkground for the press. The also dressed in darker colours, perhaps to let Amalia get some more focus or by coincidence. I would not be surprised if soon Amalia will surpass her mother as the most popular member of the family.

As the newspapers noted, she was much more next to her parents instead of behind them. And she had absoolutely no trouble in connecting with strangers.

What we hear on the news is that there is actually a lot of security. So much so that many cities can not volunteer to organise the national day as the security costs are so high. But they were hiding it well.

Various news outlets talk about criticism on the criticism on Pss Alexia. Apparently on a tv show of SBS she was dubbed 'the airpod princess'. They -men- complained that the princess did not smile and looked as if she was listening to a podcast on her airpods. Female pundits disagreed and pointed out that the princess indeed engaged a lot with the public.
