:previous: LadyFinn, Thank you for submitting this painting. Josefina and Eugenie could pass as sisters!

King Carl XIV Johan had only one son, Crown Prince Oscar. Before Crown Prince Oscar married, who was the heir to the throne after Prince Oscar?

There was no one else but Crown Prince Oscar. Many members of the aristocracy were still in favour of the son of the deposed King Gustav IV Adolf, Crown Prince Gustav so had something happened to the Bernadotte heir maybe he had been recalled to Sweden.
This not insignificant support for the Holstein-Gottorps is the major reason for King Karl XIV Johan's paranoia which in the end led him to persuade the European powers to pressure Gustav to relinquish his Swedish title and receive the title of Prince of Vasa from the Emperor of Austria.

Charles XIV was referred to as "King of Sweden and Norway".
In matters relating to Norway, Oscar I was referred to as "King of Norway and Sweden".

I wish Princess Christina's books were available in English. I'd love to read them but don't know Swedish.
Her book about Drottningholm is available in English.

Wouldn't you think there'd be more of a market for the books about Josephine and Daisy, though?

1820s: Queen Josefina

Joséphine of Leuchtenberg was the daughter of Prince Eugène de Beauharnais, Napoleon's stepson, and Princess Augusta Amalia of Bavaria. In 1822, Oskar (I) and Joséphine met and the Swedish Crown Prince proposed to her. The following year, the Crown Prince and Princess were married, first in a Catholic ceremony in Munich, without the Crown Prince being present, and later in a Swedish wedding in Stockholm. Her official name was Josefina. Josefina retained her Catholic faith and built the first Catholic church in Stockholm. She founded 'Josephinahemmet', a home for elderly, less well-off Catholics, and 'Konung Oscar I:s Minne' – a home for elderly women regardless of religious affiliation. Both still function as retirement homes today.
The portrait of Josefina by Olof Johan Södermark in 1833 can be seen in the Bernadotte Apartment at the Royal Palace.
