S.M. la Reina preside la reunión del Patronato de la Fundación Reina Sofía celebrada en el Palacio de la Zarzuela, que precedió a la del Consejo Asesor de la Fundación. La Residencia-Centro de Día y Centro de Investigación del Proyecto Alzheimer fue el tema principal de la jornada, además de la aprobación de los presupuestos del próximo año, el informe de la situación financiera y la aceptación de los donativos que se destinarán esta Navidad a las instituciones que trabajan con los más desfavorecidos. El Proyecto Alzheimer de la Fundación quiere ser un referente socio-sanitario mundial, no sólo por la novedad que supone en cuanto a cuidado del Medio Ambiente (tratamiento de aguas, energía solar, …), sino por la ordenación de espacios concebidos para los afectados, en la que las asociaciones de familiares de enfermos de Alzheimer han colaborado desde el principio en su diseño. El objetivo es que la primera piedra se coloque en marzo o abril de 2004 y que esté finalizado en septiembre de 2005, Día Mundial del Alzheimer. (Palacio de la Zarzuela. S.M. el Rey recibe de manos del director general de la Guardia Civil, Santiago López Valdivieso, un tricornio de gala de la Benemérita como recuerdo de la Audiencia concedida a una Comisión de Oficiales de la Guardia Civil del Colegio de Guardias Jóvenes de Valdemoro y de la Academia de Oficiales de Aranjuez, que conmemoran su CL y su L Aniversarios, respectivamente. Don Juan Carlos también se reunió con una Comisión de la XI Promoción de la Academia General Militar, con motivo de su ingreso hace 50 años en este centro docente militar.

S.M. la Reina, a su llegada al Teatro Real de Madrid donde presidió el Concierto de Navidad de la Fundación Cofares, a beneficio del Proyecto Alzheimer de la Fundación Reina Sofía. La Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Ucrania y la Sociedad Coral de Bilbao, dirigidas por Inmaculada Sarachaga, interpretaron obras de Glinka, Brahms, Puccini, Dvorak y Offenbach. Durante el acto, también se entregó el Premio "Farmacéutico Ejemplar" a Antonio Mateu.

Casa Real - S.M. el Rey conversa con alumnos de la Escuela de Especialidades de la Armada "Antonio de Escaño", donde casi 800 marinos reciben formación en diversas especialidades. Tras recibir los Honores de Ordenanza, Don Juan Carlos recorrió este centro docente de la Armada visitando los edificios que albergan las Aulas Especiales de las Escuelas de Armas y de Transmisiones y Electricidad y el Módulo de motores. También asistió a un ejercicio de contraincendios, en el patio del Centro de Instrucción de Seguridad Interior.

S.M. el Rey felicita al ex presidente del Gobierno, Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo Bustelo, tras imponerle la medalla y entregarle el título que le acredita como Académico de Honor de la Real Academia de Ingeniería. Durante el acto, presidido por Don Juan Carlos, Calvo-Sotelo pronunció su discurso de ingreso en el que afirmó que la sociedad necesita a los ingenieros "hoy más que nunca". Entre los temas tratados, se abordaron las leyes recientemente aprobadas para la protección patrimonial de las personas con discapacidades -que afectan al Código Civil, la Ley de Enjuiciamento Civil y la Normativa Tributaria-, y las actuaciones de los Ministerios de Justicia y Fomento para favorecer la integración de este colectivo. Además, se presentó el documento "Pautas para la correcta aplicación de las medidas relativas al acceso de las personas con discapacidad al empleo público", elaborado por el Real Patronato, y se informó sobre la concesión del los Premios Reina Sofía 2003 de Rehabilitación y de Integración a "Programas y adaptación profesional del Centro de Prevención y Rehabilitación de FREMAP 1973-2003" y al "Centro de Vida Independiente", de Río de Janeiro -Brasil-. Asimismo, los patronos conocieron el informe del Comité Español de Audiofonología sobre "La corrección protésica en niños", y el trabajo de Jaime Ponte sobre "Situación Institucional de atención temprana, nivel nacional y autonómico. It's nice to see Queen Sofia in her role as 'grandmother' now and then. It's easy to over look that fact when you see her day in and day out greeting foreign guests or on various royal duties and she looks so "business like." And when you see pictures of her in the presence of her grandchildren, they are so obviously the light of her eyes.

Spanish Royals Honour Saint James

Spain's King Juan Carlos and his wife Queen Sofia spent the run-up to the New Year in the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela, attending, for the first time, a religious ceremony dating back to the 12th century at the city's cathedral.

The solemn affair, commemorating the move of the mortal remains of Spain's patron saint, the apostle James, also inaugurated a special year for the Xacobeo, or the Way of Saint James – a historic path followed annually by thousands of pilgrims – for 2004.

After an inspection of a military brigade, the king and queen attended a mass at the Santiago cathedral. And, at the end of the ceremony, the monarch and his wife approached the famed statue of Saint James to embrace it, in line with a tradition followed by millions of visitors who congregate at the sacred spot every year.

Queen Sofia Shows Her Support for Bangladesh Women

Spain's Queen Sofia has been visiting development projects in Bangladesh as part of a four-day visit to the impoverished country. The Spanish royal arrived at the weekend to take part in the Asia Pacific Regional Summit on Microcredit, which is fighting poverty in the third world.

A long-time supporter of microcredit, Sofia came along to address the summit and redouble her efforts to empower impoverished women. It's been four years since she came to Bangladesh to meet with the economist Mohamed Yunus, whose Grameen Bank is also known as the "Bank Of The Poor".

His organisation supports development projects by giving credit to some of the country's most needy communities. On that occasion an agreement was signed between the Spanish government and the Grameen Bank to boost development in the beleaguered region.

Four years later Sofia has returned to see the achievements of that programme. And there was little doubt about its positive impact after Sofia chatted with the workers and families who have benefited from the scheme.

Over the course of its four days, some 1,300 delegates from 44 countries took part in the gathering. The APRSM is aiming to help 100 million of the world's poorest people work their way out of poverty by the end of 2009.

The Spanish royal also inspected the work of local artisans. This woman in the village of Taposkoni showed her how to make a traditional chair.

Sofia was also given a traditional hand fan as a memento of her visit. Economist Mohammad Yunus, who has spearheaded the Grameen Bank's efforts, can be seen on the right of this picture.

The influence of high-tech communication has clearly found its way to this community in Bangladesh. (Too bad none of them had the cell phones with Felipe and Letizia face plates! That would've been funny! )

I saw a photo of the whole family posing, I think it was on Hello! and only saw 4 of the grandchildren. One of Cristina's boys was missing. Miguel I assume. Why was he not present with the rest of the family?

I saw that picture, too. Miguel is probably too young to attend. A little boy almost 2 or just barely 2 years old attending a long church service or even Sunday service might be too much to expect of him.

I just love how the Spanish Royal Family shows affection publicly. It doesn't seem like many other royal families do the same. No matter what goes on beyond the scenes it's great that they can put together a united front and be real. When I see the pictures of the King and Queen loving on their Grandkids I can't help but think that one never sees Queen Elizabeth in the same position...
