King Charles & Queen Camilla - Visit to Australia and Samoa: October 2024

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
The King and Queen met up with their friend Joanna Lumley on the forecourt of the Opera House this afternoon, ahead of the Naval Review.

(Ms Lumley is doing her show there tonight.)

There was only one other person near us when the vessel carrying the official party did a sail around the edge of Farm Cove.

My husband came with me today, and we were able to have a good look at both Charles and Camilla standing in the back of the boat with some others.

The King looked happy and waved.

The Queen kept hold of a rail holding up the canopy … she was right at the rear and maybe felt a little unsteady.

Everybody was standing up, quite a lot of people, but it was easy to spot the Couple as they were at the side facing towards the land.

A flyover of seventeen helicopters in formation, four fighter jets who went over a couple of times, the Australian flag and the Navy flag flew around us over and over hanging from noisey military helicopters.

We heard a big HipHipHooray from one of the frigates as the Royal vessel circled it.

The ships are still in place on the Harbour now, even though it’s starting to get dark.

And the weather held, no whiteout.

Miss Lumley is a Dame since 2022 and wonderful to see her with the King and Queen.
(I believe Dame Lumley is on Tour down under)

Yes she is An Ard Ri … tonight at the Opera House and tomorrow at the Seymour Centre I think. She’s just come over from Perth.

Some video footage of the Fleet Review in this report …

No, working and school days today and yesterday An Ard Ari, and rest day for the Couple on Saturday. It was a Church and State day on Sunday and they are off tomorrow morning.

A short, sharp and sweet visit.

Great time had by all here though. Great coverage by our Australian media.

I saw one Australian Royal Reporter say something along the lines of his UK counterparts having to scramble to understand the thing about our country’s system of states … when the State Premiers declined the official Reception in Canberra.

I think what these few days may have looked like to people back in the UK is probably different to how people here in Sydney and Canberra experienced it all.

We had fun.

There was a lot of goodwill towards both Charles and Camilla.

Whatever agenda others … media from the UK or unhappy individuals here … may have had, to me their ideas weren’t what actually happened.

Another video of the Fleet Review …

Just a short clip but what is nice about this video is that the people who are not pro Monarchy are polite and respectful when discussing it. Something perhaps Ms Thorpe should note. One lady even says she loves the monarchy but it might be time to move on. Nothing personal against King Charles whatsoever.

So what this tells me is that it is possible to like and respect the monarchy and be in favour of a republic at the same time, which I actually hadn't considered before.

I don't live in Australia of course, but personally my impression is that many people are still very keen on keeping things as they are :)

It has been such an enjoyable Visit and thanks to all who contributed!
The final Day in Australia.

The King and Queen at Parramatta Park

Visit to the Melanoma Institute Australia, Sydney.

The king and queen reviewed the Australian Navy at Sydney Harbour

The king also unveiled a new charity called 'The King’s Foundation Australia' at a special reception at Admiralty House in Sydney .

I think the concern is also well who do we get in their place.

Fantastic to see the crowds at the Opera House to see the King and Queen in Sydney. Often we hear so much about the republic movement in Australia but I think out gets overlooked the crowds to see the royals on visits

That’s right. It would be one thing for me to go around heckling at people, but it’s quite another when you are elected to represent your constituents. You have the responsibility to conduct yourself with a certain degree of decorum and dignity. The inability of politicians to be civil is really off putting to me even if I believed in your cause.

Charles is looking so well in all the photos but what a trip! Not only a very long voyage with jet lag, but I heard that annoying sky news reporter say he had 17 engagements yesterday! If that is true it really seems a bit much. Glad the visit is over

Yes there was a lot packed into the Australia visit but they seemed to take in their stride.

Exactly!

Why does he feel the need to comment on his majesty's visit to one of his realms? Do the prime ministers of other realms also have public opinions about this visit and at other times about how he goes about his engagements in the UK?
In fairness, he may well have been asked to comment. The Media would enjoy asking him about the heckler.

Reading the article, it looks like Sir Kier was asked about it after the King was heckled.

Neither of the Australianisms you quoted are used very much in today’s Australia, actually. Have hardly heard them in the last 20 years. Except by those who jokily imitate the late Steve Irwin (who died in 2006) or even ‘Crocodile Dundee’. Can’t remember what year that film came out.
Can I just say that Australians, co-equal with the Irish, are my very favourite people. This is due in no small part to their wickedly dry sense of humour.

My extended family (Newcastle & the Hunter Valley) are an absolute tonic whenever I visit. And yes, alas, I’ve not yet met an actual Crocodile Dundee type, not even in the NT, but you never do know. My NSW family do however warn me that parts of regional Queensland are very peculiar & Victoria is sub polar but what do I, a mere pom, know! And don’t start me on the drop bears! Scary!

Anyway, getting back to The King’s visit, it seems to have been a great success. Long may it continue.

And Sydney looks stunning Sun Lion. I can never decide which one is more beautiful Sydney or Vancouver. Let’s hope HM can get to Canada soon after this short but lovely trip down under.

Oh no @Durham, its the other way around, parts of New South Wales are considered very odd indeed according to the Queenslanders!! (There is a friendly cross-border rivalry between NSW and QLD that usually rears its head during the State of Origin, the annual best-of-three rugby league game series)!

I'm so glad that the royal visit went so well and that their majesties were received (on the whole) with much warmth and good cheer and I hope that their visit to Samoa is equally as fabulous!

I went to Admiralty House to see the King and Queen off this morning … and so did a lot of people.

Three or four tv cameras, fourteen motorcycle outriders, the big cavalcade of vehicles … the last two tearing down the street at such speed, not wanting to be dropped off the end I guess.

I walked there along the only road that they would come through and saw lots of people waiting for their chance to wave goodbye and get a last photo.

So many more people to see the departure than yesterday, a last chance.

Had a wonderful view of the Queen smiling and waving in the front seat.

And chose the side with the cameras and biggest crowd as that seemed likely to be the side where the King would be seated.

Good last look as he went by, also smiling and waving of course.

The photographers yesterday caught the Queen walking up to Admiralty House from the wharf in front of it … when they disembarked the Admiral Hudson … in bare feet.

That is a steep and long walk … stairs and lawn … from the water up to the house, so I don’t blame her!

(Daily Mail has some snaps.)

Some nice videos on this link including footage of the departure at the airport a few hours ago … and the cavalcade driving out of Admiralty House this morning.

Love the young girl’s anecdotes, the Queen saying “Oh thank you Darling” to her.

The length of that queue of people waiting to get into the Opera House precinct.

It’s quite a distance from the Overseas Passenger Terminal where the ship is berthed, around Circular Quay and then down the other side to the Opera House. Glad the newsman managed to film that.

Even around here Iluvbertie there were people paying more attention to the Jacarandas than waiting outside Admiralty House for the King and Queen … but the crowds in Canberra and at the Opera House yesterday showed many were happy to get a moment with the Couple.

And most waited many hours for it.

None of which I am aware.

That isn't the sort of thing I have ever heard happening in Australia - not even for royal weddings - maybe a family or group of friends might gather but nothing organised by local communities. Street parties are very hard to organise due to the red tape involved. I live in a very quiet street with a cul-de-sac about three houses away and we haven't ever been able to get council approval for a 'street party' in the cul-de-sac which would affect no one as everyone living in the cul-de-sac would be invited. We gave up and now just have the party in people's backyards instead.

I was at my former school yesterday for a part of the day and not one of the kids asked me anything about the King and Queen (and they know of my interest) or expressed any interest whatsoever in the visit. One of the teachers commented that her next door neighbour was going to Parramatta yesterday to go to the doctor and she hoped that the 'events' wouldn't stop her getting to the doctor (no idea why it would given where Parramatta Park is in relation to where the doctor is but ...) Note 'events' and nothing about the 'royals'.

From what was shown on TV it would seem that there was a lot of interest but then on the ground, where I live in western Sydney no one was talking about it or showing any interest at all. It was something happening elsewhere.

Its not that unusual for a PM to be asked questions and as stated below was probably to do with that incident.
( I recall the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was also asked to comment on the Dutch RF Holiday to Greece during the 2020 Lockdown)

Before leaving Sydney the king attended a Sustainable Markets Initiative discussion with Governor-General Sam Mostyn at Admiralty House in Sydney.

Naturally life carries on even when there are famous visitors to the country! But it is interesting to see the various ways the visit has touched some Australians. A colleague and I were chatting and he said that his wife, and her friends threw a Royal Brunch Birthday Party! My niece's Year 5 class (she's the teacher) have been studying the role of the British monarchy and its connection to Australia. They have followed the royal visit daily and had a class party to "farewell" the King and Queen! :)
