Really lovely photos and hope you enjoyed your visits :previous:

Two videos where Historian Dan Snow talks about the stories of Kensington Palace.

Lovely pictures.

It is great to see how close you can get to the Wales' apartment, separated just by a wall and a fence.

You're right muriel, a lot of their apartment is visible from a major public entrance/exit down this side.

Perhaps they never look out these windows, but live more in the rooms facing in towards the courtyard.

One lone security guard was stationed in the drive into the complex just around from here.

At least he had his own Christmas tree, which looked better than the public tree at the front ... sparkling.

On the other side a male and a female guard where having a chat in the area where the helicopter lands, but everything was very relaxed.

A police car was stationed at the area where you exit into the complex if you fly in.

Perhaps someone was due home later in the day.

Waist high fences on most sides ... great they don't have to live behind high walls and barb-wire.

And that’s fine, as far as it goes. However, let’s not forget, there have been various serious security breaches at several royal palaces over the last few years, including near Adelaide Cottage, so vigilance is still required.

Great pictures btw Sun Lion, and very clear. A wintry landscape though! Brrrh!

The main rooms do face south over the garden Sun Lion.

I think the wall was only built because Princess Margaret moved into 1A. Before that there was a railing or maybe a hedge?

So there is the wall at the bottom of the Wales' garden at KP 1A. Then there is a fence that separates the public walkway from the wall, a sort of security perimeter of sorts.

From the street (Kensington Palace Gardens / Palace Green) you could previously see very clearly into KP, the Clock Tower and, to a lesser extent, the quadrangle as you only had a metal railing separating you. In William and Catherine's time, a thick hedge was put up in the garden close to Kensington Palace Gardens / Palace Green blocking this view off. They too some flack from it in the Press, but I think it was the right thing to do.

Tiaras Revealed at Kensington Palace

Sorry if this has been addressed above but was hoping to see if anyone has any insight into (1) the rough positioning of the various Grace-and-Favour Apartments and (2) which Apartments have been occupied by various family members throughout history.

My (incomplete) comprehensive list is:

Apartment 1&1A (prior to being split):
Up to 1843: Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex
Up to 1873: Prince Augustus' morganatic widow, Cecilia Underwood, Duchess of Inverness
Mid 1870's to 1939: HRH The Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll

Mid-1950's - Apartments Split into 1 and 1A

Apartment 1A - Location: Eastern Side of the Clock Court
1963 - 2002: HRH The Princess Margaret
2013 - present: William, Prince of Wales and family

Apartment 1 - Location: South-East-most part of the main Palace complex
1955 - 1968: Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent
1972 - 2004: Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester
2004 - 2019: Prince Richard, 2nd Duke of Gloucester & family

Apartment 4 ("The Clock House" Apartment) - Location: South Side of the Clock Court
unknown to 1922: HRH The Dowager Duchess of Albany (widow of Prince Leopold)
1923 - 1981: HRH Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone (daughter of the above) with temporary interruption following Fire Damage due to a bomb in October 1940
1997-ish: Split into "The Clock Tower Apartment", and Apartments 4A, 4B, and 4C. 4B used by Sir Michael Peat from ~1997 to ~2011

Apartment 5 - Location: ??
Very little information available on this Apartment or its actual existence - at least one reference to it being the home of "The Keppels" at the time of the 1940 Fire Damage.

Apartment 6 - South Side of Prince of Wales Court
Smallest Apartment historically, used by The Palace Chaplain during Queen Victoria's reign, and then as a home for her Dresser after The Queen's death.
Merged into Apartment 7 from 1925 - 1950.
Now divided into several smaller apartments.

Apartment 7 - South-West end of the main Palace complex
Site of the Chapel Royal until 1901.
Home of The Dowager Marchioness of Milford Haven (Prince Philip's maternal grandmother) from 1923 until her death in 1950. Often stayed in by Prince Philip during his youth, and where he lived temporarily in the months prior to his Wedding in 1947.
Later Diana's Office post-divorce.

Apartment 8 - Western side of Prince of Wales Court
In 1928 recorded as the home of "Countess Granville" - possibly wife of the 4th Earl Granville, who was an older sister of the-then Duchess of York (later The Queen Mother).

In 1940 home of Lady Patricia Ramsey (born HRH Princess Patricia of Connaught), probably stayed as her home until her death in 1974.

Merged with Apartment 9 in 1981 to become Charles and Diana's marital home.

Apartment 9 - North of Prince of Wales Court and South of Princess' Court
In 1940 recorded as the home of Lady Bertha Dawkins, former Lady-in-Waiting to Queen Mary.
Vacant 1956 - 1966.
Merged with Apt 8 in 1981.

Apartment 10 - Eastern side of the Princess' Court
unknown - 1960: Alexander Mountbatten, Marquess of Carisbrooke and family (known as Prince Alexander of Battenberg prior to 1917).
1960 - 1963: Temporary Home of Princess Margaret whilst Apt 1A was being renovated, referred to by Margaret as "The Dolls House".
~1978 - present: Prince and Princess Michael of Kent

Mystery Apartment - Princess Victoria of Kent, Teck Family, Princess Beatrice (Battenberg)
I've read that the Apartment which The Dowager Duchess of Kent and Princess Victoria of Kent occupied prior to Victoria becoming Queen in 1837 was later given to Victoria's cousin, HRH Princess Mary-Adelaide, Duchess of Teck, mother of Queen Mary, and that after Queen Victoria's death this in turn became the Apartment of Victoria's youngest daughter, HRH The Princess Beatrice (then known as Princess Henry of Battenberg).

I've seen a biography of Princess Beatrice which referred to her London address post-1901 as "Apartment 2, Kensington Palace" but this is the only mention I've ever seen of an "Apartment 2".

Think I've read on here that this might have overlapped part of what is now considered the "State Apartments", possibly on the floor below The Queen's Gallery - this would make sense given it would render "Apartment 2" as being part of or immediately next to Apartment 10, which we know was used by Beatrice's son Lord Carisbrooke.

Conclusion:
Hoping that some kind soul might help point me in the direction of a book, doco, report, newspaper etc which might confirm:

(1) is all of the above correct, and have any notable residents been missed?
(2) is there any info out there which confirms the existence of an Apartment 2, Apartment 3, or Apartment 5?
(3) It seems like the biggest ?? re locations for Apartments is the section which sits in between Princes of Wales' Court and the Clock Court, and the section South of the Prince of Wales' Court (east of Apt 7's approx location)

Look rather bucolic. Hard to believe it's the centre of a huge city.

During WW1 the gardens of Kensington Palace were transformed into allotments to grow vegetables .
I wonder if the same thing happened in WWII? The food situation was quite difficult during each war, but there was a more centralized effort to utilize all available growing space during WWII.

I believe that the grounds of all the royal Palaces in the UK were utilised for fruit and vegs during the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign during WW2 and immediately afterwards.

That included land adjacent to the Castles and Palaces. Below is a wartime photo of a woman on her allotment in the nearby Kensington Palace Gardens.

Something possibly unimaginable in todays world but a necessity in WW1 with the war effort!
