Dear Friends,
We can always, by looking around us, find cause for complaint or be saddened by the many difficult situations we experience, both near and far: the violence, in words and deeds, in relations between countries and the resulting wars, as well as the violence in human relationships that we observe daily, here in France and elsewhere.
Without turning a blind eye to these realities, the period preceding Christmas is special and holds within it reasons for hope. Indeed, the year ends with its joys and sorrows, and the new year dawns with all the changes it can bring, which we hope will be for the better.
For Christians, and for myself, the prospect of the coming of Christ, which we celebrate on December 25th, leads us to see things differently. Preparing the nativity scene, decorating the Christmas tree, and attending religious ceremonies are all opportune moments to change our habits and place the past year and the year to come at the feet of the New Christ Child. It's also a time to recognize the positive things that often occur during this period: families reuniting, solidarity emerging, and conflicts temporarily suspended.
At this time of year, when good wishes are being made, my thoughts go out to the most vulnerable, the poor, the sick, those experiencing hardship, those who are isolated, those affected by wars and persecution because of their faith, especially Christians. Despite your circumstances, may you find comfort at the feet of the Holy Family.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
