Mary of Modena planned to become a nun and join the Salesian order. Her father considered marrying her to James, Duke of York.
 
Who was the minister who tried to pass an Exclusion Bill that would cut James out of the line of succession?
 
The person most associated with it was the Earl of Shaftesbury.
He was also vehemently opposed to Charles II marriage to Catherine of Braganza.
The Earl fell foul of the king and fled to Amsterdam where he died in exile.
 
The ladies of the Court of King Charles II did not like Mary of Modena. They nicknamed her "the daughter of the Pope".
 
James II having arrived at Kinsale in Cork marched towards Dublin in March 1689 and set up residence at Dublin Castle.
A French fleet consisting of over 30 ships had brought the king to Ireland where his arrival was marked with great support from the Catholic majority.
The king was supported by the powerful Catholic Jacobite Earl of Tyrconnell who had raised an army of between 36,000-40,000.King James had brought with him French generals and officers and some Grench troops.
James also summoned the Irish Parliament which lasted from the 7th of May 1689 to the 20th of July 1689.
The 1689 Parliament was know as the Patriot Parliament and was comprised of 70 members mainly all from old Anglo -Irish Catholic houses but a small number of Protestant Lords and Bishops.
