Infanta Sofia on the photos released for her 18th birthday today, April 29 - interesting choice, not too formal, not too casual, and no dress, I like that:

Infanta Sofia in eye-catching red - like her mother - on her graduation day today, May 24:

Very unflattering outfit on Sofia, very poor quality.

What a dreadful, poorly fitted outfit for an HRH.
Agreed. The color choice for both, the me-Tarzan single shoulder strap and the overall look is bad. And I'm still waiting for her to pull that mane back in a pony tail, or up in a more glamorous up-do instead of covering 75% of the face and ears in every photo. I need her two first cousins to do an intervention and glam her up for once.

It’s just not a great look for Sofia in terms of color, style, or pretty much anything else, although it’s her graduation; her choice to wear whatever she pleases.

The way professional models (usually) look so immaculate is by having stylists, designers, and others close at hand when they are appearing on the runway. Their perfection is an illusion.

Even wealthy (and beautiful) royal women don’t have this advantage, so occasionally their clothing will seem ill-chosen, or poorly fitted, or wrinkled, and their hair and makeup may not be perfect.

I thought Sofia looked like a lovely 18 year old woman who chooses her own clothes and probably has only modest assistance from others.

I stand in awe of royal women who have to get all dressed up 100 + times a year, and I choose to give each of them the benefit of the doubt for their efforts, even some who make so real effort at all. And I enjoy seeing their choices and appearances.

I wonder if the problem is the color itself that made the look to seem too harsh. Like imagine the same dress and cut, but with a spring mood of large print flowers to break it apart better than a full solid red.

The color isn’t right for her — she has softer coloring than her mom (on whom I like about four or five colors before getting to red, personally) and a bright crayon red just isn’t going to work — all we see is the color and not Sofia. She wore something very nice in a teal last year or earlier this year, I remember.

Even with the right color though, the style and fit and possibly fabric just aren’t flattering. She obviously likes “artsy” clothes, but this would have worked better by being looser around the middle, not clingy — and Sofia still has a very tall, relatively-straight figure! (Things ought not to cling to her midsection, naturally, anyway.) So something went rather off the rails with this outfit.

I like the colour but that's all and its not what I expected for a graduation ceremony.
I wish Sofia did something with her and pulled it back off her face.

Just as a follow-up… I can’t help feeling Sofia would look about 20x better if she stuck to colors more like this (she’s already worn most of the blues, purples, the nice teal whatever it was, and something similar in her birthday photos): Soft Summer: The Ultimate Guide ∙ ElementalColour

Style’s another matter, but at least there’s a greater chance we’d be talking about how nice she looks and how pretty her hair is and not getting stuck on the hard clash of her clothes.

If both were casual, doesn’t that imply that the ceremony was likely casual dress?

Maybe but it looked more personal choice of the attendees - a smarter dress would have been my choice.

The colour was nice though on Sofia

It must have been smart casual but I was surprised not to see any academic dress with hats/capes for the ceremony.

Not UWC style. There were none at Leonor/Alexia’s.

Yes. UWC Atlantic College is, excuse me the term, a "woke" school ,and this particular event is a not a graduation, but rather a farewell and thanksgiving ceremony. I am pretty sure the dresscode is not expected to be overly formal.

Given that they are not graduating, any graduation dresses and caps would be inappropriate.
