Prince Philip received the Ambassador of Spain, Juan José Sanz, today, December 18, and used the opportunity to write about his relationship with members of the Royal Family of Spain:

Today, at the Royal Court, I received the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain, Juan José Sanz. The meeting took place in a cordial and open atmosphere, with an exchange of views on the traditionally good relations between Serbia and Spain, as well as on the importance of their further enhancement. On that occasion, we also exchanged views on the current challenges we are facing, with agreement that every crisis, with a responsible and thoughtful approach, can represent an opportunity for further progress and improvement.
During the conversation, we also reflected on the deep blood ties that connect our Royal House with the Royal Family of Spain. By blood relation, I am doubly related to His Majesty King Felipe VI, as he is the nephew of my mother Maria da Glória of Orléans-Braganza, and the brother-in-law of my father Crown Prince Alexander, who is the nephew of Queen Sofia in the second degree.

Discussing these family ties, the ambassador conveyed to me the greetings of His Majesty King Felipe VI, as well as the assurance that the historical and dynastic ties represent a solid foundation for further strengthening the friendly relations between our two countries. In addition to genealogy, our ties are characterized by strong personal and emotional threads that are passed down through generations. As a special sign of that closeness, Her Majesty Queen Sofia was one of my godparents at my baptism, which for me represents a lasting honor and a deeply personal memory.
I am grateful to Ambassador Sanz for the visit and the constructive conversation, with the conviction that the friendship between Serbia and Spain, as well as the ties between our royal families, will continue to develop in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation.

So how does the family propose to pay for the maintenance? Or is that something that is not their responsibility?

Sounds like Philip wasn't that smart.

The property is state-owned, but the royal family had the right to use it. The family paid bills and upkeep, while the state handled maintenance until the end of 2025. From 2026, the state will no longer fund maintenance, and it is still unclear how this will be managed in the future.
