Hi,

I was recently on the Swedish monarchy's website and noticed how in each of the bios, they included the crown for each member of the royal family.

Why does each member have a crown? Is this some long standing tradition?

It is their royal monogram, wich consists of the first letter in their forename (or two if they have a double name like Carl Gustaf and Carl Philip) and a heraldic crown according to their respective rank.

So it’s the rules of heraldry

No, I'm referring to actual physical crowns. For example, on Princess Sofia's bio, at the bottom it shows Princess Sofia's crown and mentions "Princess Sofia Albertina's crown, made in Stockholm 1772 by Johan Adam Marcklin."

Ah i see… Those are the historical princely coronets that belongs to the crown jewels.

A long time ago, the Princes and Princess’ of the blood wore coronets to the coming of age ceremony, to the swedish state opening of parliament and to coronations…

Today they are only symbolically used during weddings and baptisms when the Princes and Princess’ officially recives (but never wears) one of the princely coronets as their personal ”ranking crown”

The coronet they have symbolically recived upon marriage or baptism is also placed on their coffin at their funeral.

You can read more about the coronets (and the other swedish regalia) here : Regalia of Sweden - Wikipedia

Four research projects in the humanities and social sciences at the School of Sport and Health Sciences, GIH, have received a total of 1.6 million SEK from the Center for Sports Research, CIF.
One of the projects:
Rex ludens: Monarchy, power and tennis from Vasa to Bernadotte
This project examines how tennis functioned as a status symbol for Swedish royalty from around 1550 to 1950. With a long research period and new theoretical concepts, traditional periodizations in sports history, which has otherwise been a distinctly modern historical discipline, are challenged.
Viewed from the perspective of how, when, where and with whom royalty played tennis, the project's hypothesis is that this sport reflects a shift in how royalty historically sought to give legitimacy to the monarchy.

Am I right?

Today it was announced that Princess Ines is now also Duchess of Västerbotten. How many duchies in Sweden have today no living Duke/Duchess? I think it must be four duchies: Närke, Smaland, Uppland and Västmanland. Have I forgot one?

Duchy of Uppland has not been reissued since 1934
Duchy of Närke has not been reissued since 1947
The Duchy of Småland has not been reissued since 1932

There's aslo :
Duchy of Öland
Duchy of Dalsland

Swedish landscapes with currently no duke or duchess is Lappland, Norrbotten, Medelpad, Härjedalen, Uppland, Västmanland, Närke, Dalsland, Bohuslän, Småland and Öland.

Technically also Jämtland since His Majesty’s accession but it is well known here in Sweden that he still views himself as Duke of Jämtland.

So there is still titles available for future children of Estelle and Oscar.

So 12 duchies are available if we count Jämtland. And at the time Estelle and Oscar get children Västergötland could also be available again
