King Juan Carlos attended the celebration of the 74th birthday of King Fuad Il of Egypt on January 15th in Switzerland.

So he can travel to Switzerland for this birthday, but not to Greece for the funeral of his sister-in-law

I hav to say when I read JC wasn't attending Irene's funeral I wondered if it wasn't more to it and the family didn't want to have to cope with his presence, especially so publicly.

I suppose the only other excuse would be that he was already on his return when the news of Irene's passing came though or the date of the funeral was known and another trip to Europe was advised against. But very unlikely imo.

That was my feeling as well…. So much for having ”a weak heart” and ”being ill for several days when he comes back from trips”…

Though i can also imagine that Queen Sofia didn’t wanted to see him there… They are practically a divorced couple in everything but on paper now…

Don Juan Carlos suits himself and always has , my guess is that he was simply not wanted at Irene's funeral.
His recent memoirs stoked the family fires and did his daughter in law no favours , it was best that he stayed away.

Laurence Debray, biography of King Juan Carlos and author of her memoir 'Reconciliation', denies to ¡Hola! that the emeritus King traveled to Switzerland this January.

"It's completely false! I was with him in Abu Dhabi", he asserts, going further to state that King Felipe VI's father "hasn't left Abu Dhabi since Christmas for health reasons. His doctors won't allow it".
But at 88 years old, King Felipe's father has "quite serious" health problems, and his medical team doesn't want him to tire himself out. They want him to rest and travel as little as possible. "A round trip from Abu Dhabi to Madrid, and then even going to Athens without being able to spend a night in Madrid, is terrible. It's very hard, and since going to the hotel depresses him greatly—because his son won't let him into the Zarzuela Palace—that's why he doesn't go". Laurence Debray predicts that coming to Spain and Europe will be "more complicated from now on".

:previous:This information comes from a photo shared on the Instagram account of Kuwaiti sheikh, Khalid Al-Sabah. He shared the photo on January 15th, stating it was taken in Switzerland. However, according to Laurence Debray, biography of King Juan Carlos, the photograph does not correspond to the period in which it was uploaded.
The Kuwaiti sheikh has deleted the photo from his account

José María Aznar, who was Prime Minister of Spain between 1996 and 2004, posted a photo of a meeting with King Juan Carlos.

And he wrote the following caption:
With King Juan Carlos. Reunion with the King of Liberties and Democracy in Spain.

Let's examine the chronological order of events.
Before Princess Irene passed away, King Juan Carlos, in his autobiography, stated that Queen Sofia was the love of his life.
AFTER:
Irene, a person very loved to Queen Sofia, dies... And then Juan carlos ´s friends and official biographer, to justify his partying in Switzerland and his not going to Madrid to comfort his "beloved" Sofia, say: "He is very ill, he cannot travel, the doctors have told him he cannot..."

After ; the Juan Carlos's friends say: "He is very ill, Queen Sofia is very lonely, she will need him, he must return..."
NOW King Juan Carlos says: "He is very well, he enjoys excellent health, and that claim that he was ill was a lie..."
He says he's in excellent health, and he claims he's upset about the rumors surrounding his health.

If he wants to return to Spain, let him return, let no one stop him, but his friends stop using Queen Sofia as an excuse.
And "Queen Sofia is the love of my life"????????????????????????????????????.

There's one thing I don't understand. Juan Carlos and Sofia have been separated for many years, even though they haven't divorced. Since 2020, his move to Abu Dhabi has even separated them physically. This marriage has existed only on paper for decades. Why should Sofia seek comfort from her estranged husband, especially during difficult times? He wasn't there for her otherwise. I hope she has other family members and friends from whom she can receive support and affection.

I would say Sofia likely gets more support and comfort from her son, daughter in law and their daughters than she gets (or has ever had) from her husband so why invite him if its makes those people uncomfortable?

I think King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía don't have a bad relationship. They've been separated for decades, but they're at an advanced age, where people usually put past problems into perspective. I imagine they would even like to spend more time together, since they have children together and both worked to restore and maintain the monarchy, which was a shared life goal. The Spanish press says they speak regularly on the phone and that their relationship isn't bad.

Why doesn’t she go out and see him or they get together at some chosen place, then?

All I can think is if she loses him next after her siblings and best friend, she’s not going to be very happy…

Sofia's 2 pillars of strength were the late Princess Irene and Princess Tatiana ,both of whom were constant throughout her married life.
Queen Sofia always maintained a close relationship with both of Juan Carlos's sisters and their families.

Personally I think the last person Sofia wants around is Don Juan Carlos with his baggage and his reputation in tatters.

Sources close to King Juan Carlos have told ¡HOLA! how he is doing at this time, following the US and Israeli conflict against Iran that has affected his residence in Abu Dhabi.
According to sources close to him, King Juan Carlos "is calm and safe", they say, "but anything can happen".
"He lives in a very unstable and dangerous conflict zone", they remind us, adding that "the war there could last a long time". In this regard, they point out that right now, King Juan Carlos "cannot leave" Abu Dhabi, where he has resided for the past five and a half years, since "the airspace is closed".
At the same time, it is worth noting that King Juan Carlos is not currently at his home, but rather staying in a hotel in the city.
King Juan Carlos moved to a hotel because his residence is under renovation. But the same sources say that he is currently better at the hotel because he is less isolated.

King Juan Carlos announced that, after his death, he wishes to be buried in the Royal Chapel of Granada, next to the Catholic Monarchs: Juana the Mad, Felipe the Handsome, Isabel I of Castile, and Fernando II of Aragon.
Laurence Debray, biographer of King Juan Carlos, confirmed this same information to the program 'Espejo Publico': "[Laurence Debray] was emphatic, because she sent me the link to Informalia and told me it's 100% real. That's how it is".

Interesting! But every Statement keeps fuelling the discussion about his Return…
Yes, but he must be afraid that his last wishes won't be fulfilled, and so through his biographer he informs the press and makes public what he wants. Nothing is by chance. I don't think he wants to return to Spain permanently, at least not for now, because he would have to have tax residency in Spain.

What does this mean for his wife, queen Sofia? She deserves a burial lace for a queen. Is she on the same page? Will the government and king go along and bury both of them there?
I think we'll have to wait and see what Sofia's wishes are. But I imagine, even if she ends up somewhere different than Juan Carlos, it will still be some place befitting her rank. Her son wouldn't have her buried with anything less I'm sure.

She might want to be burried in Greece with her Family anyway.
