Today, it has been made public, in the Official State Gazette, that King Felipe grants the highest distinction of the Spanish Royal House, Toisón de oro, to his mother Queen Sofia, for her dedication and commitment to the service of Spain and the crown. This was awarded in October, but now it is official.

Great and well deserved Honor. But why did they not announce it in October?

The Spanish Order of the Golden Fleece may be awarded to wowen The Austrian Order don't. The Ladies are grantedby the Starry Cross.
Great Honor for Queen Sofia who received it after her granddaughter Leonor.

Today I read an opinion that said that The Golden Fleece should have been awarded to her by King Juan Carlos before ending his Reign.
I agree, it is nice, good and very worthy that King Felipe decorates his mother, I applaud King Felipe, but it is true that she, as has been demonstrated, has been a very important figure in the service of the Crown and for Spain ... King Juan Carlos owes a lot to Queen Sofia .., so it would have been very correct if it had been King Carlos who had awarded it to Queen Sofia.

Like a lot of things with Juan Carlos, perhaps he should have, but he didn’t.

Perhaps he just didn’t have time, given the stress and negativity he quit under. Or perhaps it didn’t occur to him.

It’s nice and still appropriate Felipe can do this for his deserving mother — but you notice there is no message of congratulations from her husband…

Yes it should have been King Juan Carlos giving the Golden Fleece to Queen Sofia, but then King Felipe also waited for over 10 years after his accession.
But then we have to remember that Queen Sofia is the first Queen Consort ever to which is given. The only other woman who had it before were Queen Isabel II., who as Queen of Spain had it of course, Queen Beatrix, Queen Margrethe II. and Queen Elizabeth II.

It would have been a nice signal of king Juan Carlos indeed. But considering why he abdicated it perhaps would have been considered hypocritical. And I imagine for his wife it is more special to receive the toison d´or from her son -for whose future she made sacrifices- rather than from her estranged husband.
