Today, it has been made public, in the Official State Gazette, that King Felipe grants the highest distinction of the Spanish Royal House, Toisón de oro, to his mother Queen Sofia, for her dedication and commitment to the service of Spain and the crown. This was awarded in October, but now it is official.

Great and well deserved Honor. But why did they not announce it in October?

The Spanish Order of the Golden Fleece may be awarded to wowen The Austrian Order don't. The Ladies are grantedby the Starry Cross.
Great Honor for Queen Sofia who received it after her granddaughter Leonor.

Today I read an opinion that said that The Golden Fleece should have been awarded to her by King Juan Carlos before ending his Reign.
I agree, it is nice, good and very worthy that King Felipe decorates his mother, I applaud King Felipe, but it is true that she, as has been demonstrated, has been a very important figure in the service of the Crown and for Spain ... King Juan Carlos owes a lot to Queen Sofia .., so it would have been very correct if it had been King Carlos who had awarded it to Queen Sofia.

Like a lot of things with Juan Carlos, perhaps he should have, but he didn’t.

Perhaps he just didn’t have time, given the stress and negativity he quit under. Or perhaps it didn’t occur to him.

It’s nice and still appropriate Felipe can do this for his deserving mother — but you notice there is no message of congratulations from her husband…

Yes it should have been King Juan Carlos giving the Golden Fleece to Queen Sofia, but then King Felipe also waited for over 10 years after his accession.
But then we have to remember that Queen Sofia is the first Queen Consort ever to which is given. The only other woman who had it before were Queen Isabel II., who as Queen of Spain had it of course, Queen Beatrix, Queen Margrethe II. and Queen Elizabeth II.

It would have been a nice signal of king Juan Carlos indeed. But considering why he abdicated it perhaps would have been considered hypocritical. And I imagine for his wife it is more special to receive the toison d´or from her son -for whose future she made sacrifices- rather than from her estranged husband.

Point de Vue followers voted Queen Sofia as their favourite royal grandmother in a recent poll.

I'm glad it was King Felipe VI who awarded it to his mother as a personal recognition.

Pardon my ignorance but what kind of defamatory and injurious statements did Revilla Roiz make against the King?
Are they that bad?
The King has shown he needed no help in defaming his own image and character.

I am glad about this lawsuit, because Miguel Angel Revilla is the Ex President of an Autonomous Community, Cantabria, which he has abandoned, because he has spent his entire term on Spanish televisions talking about all kinds of issues, Trump, King Juan Carlos in a sickly way... and yet, in his autonomous community the people have been criticizing is that he did not govern the autonomous community and dedicated himself to being famous on television, when this autonomous community had many problems with infrastructure and... He has used the position to become famous in Spain, and to make a personal business selling books and such. In the last elections people did not vote for him (although in the previous ones neither, he governed with an agreement with another political party that prevented the political formation with the most votes in the Autonomous Community from governing) he has taken advantage of his position to become famous in Spain, forgetting to exercise and assume the responsibilities of his Autonomous Community, and for that I am glad, because his statements against King Juan Carlos have been insulting, and he has accused him of everything...

The ex monarch is suing him for having "seriously slandered" him in public statements made between May 2022 and January 2025.

King Juan Carlos I will prosecute Corinna Larsen for attacking his honor.
According to the Spanish press, King Juan Carlos is determined to face all those who violated his right to honor. This new legal process against Corinna Larsen has not yet begun.

The press in Spain is talking about Juan Carlos filing a law suit against Corinna. I remain doubtful JC is so stupid to bring her to a Court when she still has so much arsenal against him.

I don't understand Juan Carlos. He's living in Emirates because as a resident there his money is not scrutinised at all. If he came back to Spain, he knows full well, the Spanish tax department would be looking at all the money he receives. And as Revilla says, he still has undeclared millions in tax paradises and is the real reason he won't be back to Spain.

Juan Carlos is a loose cannon wanting recognition but unable to understand his legacy is truly tainted for the majority of people in Spain.

As a bit of gossip, some tv programs in Spain are saying that his French biographer (a female) is behind JC lawsuits. I have no idea if it's true or not but knowing JC I wonder if she's the latest he's sweet on. And yes, he's 87 y.o, but considering his record, I still think he's still governed by what's underneath his trouser's fly.

He should let sleeping dogs lie. All these court cases could open up Pandora's box and reveal perhaps more damning things about JC that could tarnish his image even further . Plus hell hath no fury than a woman scorned suing his jilted ex-lover is a very BAD idea.

To be honest, JC's behavior with the lawsuits and upcoming memoirs seems borderline selfish. JC seems determined to draw attention to himself. He should stay far-away from Spain and let his son continue to enjoy his successful reign as King of Spain.

All these court cases….. The man is 87 and not in good health… Had i been him i would just let things be from now on and try to enjoy whatever time i have left…

If his right to his honour is such a big deal for him, he should have thought about that earlier… Right now the best thing he can do to both his honour and his familys honour is to lie as low as possible…

There are a couple of issues that may have brought this lawsuit on.

Queen Sofia getting the Golden Fleece last year (not likely but who knows considering how much JC detests Sofia) and more likely, the 50th anniversary of his proclamation as King of Spain in November which won't have any institutional or public recognition.

Unfortunately JC is living in a golden prison of his own making, surrounded by friends telling him what he wants to hear, and making stupid ego decisions far away from Spain.

He can come back to Spain without a problem .....but he knows if he does it, the tax department will be looking where he gets his money from. And he doesn't want to do that.

If true, the tabloid press will be rubbing their hands, it will get a lot of coverage.
Maybe its JCs way to promote his book, by launching those lawsuits and creating maximal attention.

Had Juan Carlos donated considerable sums of money to charity or done something for a charitable cause it might have reflected better on his image.
Instead he's going through the courts and more headlines and God knows what else will come out about him.
Actions speak louder than words!

With JC returning to Spain for the regattas, court cases and the book, we can expect a considerable media presence for the Emeritus in the next months.

Which is never welcome news surrounding the ex Monarch!
