On May 10th, Emperor Emeritus Akihito was discharged from the University of Tokyo Hospital around 11:30am, returning to Sento Imperial residence with Empress Emerita Michiko. She visited daily. The couple expressed gratitude to the hospital staff.

Emperor Emeritus Akihito has been diagnosed with silent myocardial ischemia and will receive new medication. While he will require careful monitoring, he will continue to walk and exercise with adjustments as needed.

Based on the test results, Akihito, 91, was diagnosed to be suffering from asymptomatic myocardial ischemia, a condition where blood flow from coronary arteries to the heart muscle is reduced but the patient does not have subjective symptoms.

To improve blood flow, Akihito will be administered drugs to reduce the progression of arteriosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.

The Imperial Household Agency said he has no difficulty in his daily life, including speaking and walking, and has no subjective symptoms.

He will receive new drug treatment while avoiding excessive exercise. Doctors will need to observe his condition with extra caution. He is expected to continue his research on goby fish.


 
On May 16th, the Imperial Household Agency provided an update on Emperor Emeritus Akihito following his diagnosis of silent myocardial ischemia.
  • began medication to improve blood flow and slow the progression of arteriosclerosis
  • will resume fish research at Imperial Palace from next week
  • resumed morning exercise routine on May 11
    • added breaks between walking, leg raises, and climbing and descending short stairs
    • reduced exercise time to 30 minutes
    • reduced number of repetitions and distance
  • resumed afternoon strolls in Akasaka Estate with Empress Emerita Michiko
