King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will pay a state visit to Kenya from March 18 - 20, 2025,
it was announced today.

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima are to pay a state visit to Kenya, at the invitation of President William Ruto. The visit will take place from Tuesday 18 to Thursday 20 March 2025.

This first state visit to Kenya is a reaffirmation of the good relations and solid cooperation between our two countries. The Netherlands seeks to engage in new partnerships in various areas, and to deepen the countries’ existing ties. Kenya plays an increasingly influential role in the global arena. In addition, the Netherlands and Kenya maintain close economic relations, and both are major hubs and gateways to large regions.

Within the UN and other international organisations, too, our two countries work together actively towards goals relating to democracy, the rule of law and independence of the judiciary. The Netherlands and Kenya also work together on challenges relating to peace and security, climate change and food security.

Economic missions focusing on sustainable agriculture and water will take place in parallel with the King and Queen’s state visit.

Apparently, the state visit is receiving pushback from opponents of the current president (both in Kenia as well as people from Kenia who live in the Netherlands). They are sending protest letters to the court in the hopes of moving them to cancel this visit.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The state visit begins tomorrow.

I wondered about this visit, but it may be related to the flower industry. Many Dutch companies have stated projects there and have the flowers flown over to the Netherlands. So the flowery earrings are perhaps a nod to that.

Do we have an agenda - can we assume dinner and black tie this evening?

It can be found in the link of the opening post of this thread, but here it is again :flowers:

For tonight it says:

I get the impression from one of the Dutch reporters I follow on X that all is not going well. I don't completely get the context for some of it but some of the tweets include

Basically, the wrong anthem was played? And WA had to wait to speak at the state banquet until someone else had spoken (not the President) ??
The right anthem was played but the players weren't that good, so musically it was off. And it sounds indeed as if the Kenian president had arranged for a Dutch national to speak some kind of laudation to the king before his speech.

On koninklijkhuis.nl, pictures are added for each activity. So far, they've included pictures for the various activities this morning.

For a terrible moment, I thought they were going to make them get their own food from the buffet! Fortunately, they were served at the top table.

Apparently they had some problems finding artists to accompanying them. Some refused due to human rights concerns.

Day 2, March 19, has started with a visit to an inland container depot and one to a Dutch horticultural business:
