The Royal House of Thailand has released a statement announcing that Queen Sirikit has died.
On 24 October 2025 at 21.21, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother has passed away peacefully at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, the Thai Red Cross Society. The age of 93.

More information:
His Majesty the King has issued a royal command for the Bureau of the Royal Household to arrange the royal urn with the highest royal honors according to royal tradition. The royal urn will be placed at Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall in the Grand Palace. His Majesty has graciously granted permission for members of the Royal Family and courtiers to mourn for a period of one year from the date of death.

May she rest in peace. She was extremely elegant back in my childhood. I suppose that was the last restraining influence on the king.

What would one year of mourning entail? Will she only be cremated after that one year of mourning? I seem to recall that previous deaths within the family had a long time between the announcement of death and the cremation (and all the events that come with it).

Not surprisingly, Andrew MacGregor Marshall stands by his claim that the queen died about 4 months ago but that they waited until today for a more convenient moment to announce.

Very likely that it will be up to a year until the cremation Ceremony. They will have to built up the Cremation site as there is not a permanent one but only built after a royal death

Are they going to keep her body in a refrigerator for a year???😱

As for the funeral - it probably will be a bit less solemn than that of her husband; after all it was he who was a Sovereign, she - "just" sovereign's wife.

The late Queen Mother has today geen granted nine-tier umbrella for her funeral ceremonies - the first time a consort has been granted this honour.
Can you explain the nine-tier umbrella?

She was both a legend and a legendary beauty. I recall ages ago when the king decided to stay in Thailand for some reason, and not do any more travels, the queen became the one that visited other countries to represent him

Today, The Royal Procession carrying the royal remains of the Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother proceeded from King Chulalongkorn Memorial’s Hospital, the Thai Red Cross Society to Phiman Rattaya Throne Hall in the Grand Palace for the Royal Funeral Bathing Ceremony.

She knew such a lot of Royals and REven General de Gaulle said she was the most beautiful Queen.
I hope a lot of royal attendences to her Funerals

The ceremony seems to take a year and is completed with the cremation, so yes, she will be preserved until then. I recall same happened when the current king's aunt passed away. The devotion and ceremonies involved are different from traditional European monarchies and if needed to establish parallels think of them as a combination of the Pope + a royal.

Come to think of it, had the Egyptian, Aztec or Inca civilizations survived to this day the funeral customs would have been preserved in the same traditions we read about in books.

Year-long funeral starts for Thailand's former queen Sirikit

"...Members of the royal family are venerated in Thailand, treated by many as semi-divine figures and lavished with glowing media coverage and gold-adorned portraits hanging in public spaces and private homes nationwide.
The former queen's body is due late on Sunday afternoon to make the short trip from Chulalongkorn Hospital to the seat of the Thai royalty, where she will lie in state for one year before cremation..."

Television newscasters are wearing black and media websites have turned monochrome, while citizens have been asked to dress in muted colours and curtail celebratory public events for 90 days.

I've never heard of TV stations turning to monochrome on a national mourning event. It's fascinating to see the devotion in Thailand sees the royals not as historical, political or government figures but as something beyond that. It's a deeply religious connection for everyone in the country.

The queen appears below at the 2:31 mark

I’m sure many royals will be invited to her cremation but it likely won’t be until next autumn so they have plenty of time to decide who should attend…

May she rest in peace she was truly an elegant and grand dame, it shame that most of her contemporary royal are either dead or to old to travel to pay the final respects to her in her funeral!

Now the loved Queen Sirikit passed away , will the new Monarchy remain popular. Did the actual King and Queen hosted State Visits ?

I doubt much will change.. Queen Sirikit retired from public life after her stroke in 2012.. It’s difficult to know how much she has been aware of things ever since and if she has had any say over anything in her sons reign.. The thai court never says anything..

Bhumibol’s death was the real test and somehow they survived it despite a lets say ”unconventional” new king…

We seem to have seen two of the King’s sisters but not Maha Chakri Sirindhorn since their mother died? Or have I just missed her?

I have seen her in all the videos that have been posted. She seems to be participating in everything the king is.

Which one is the princess on the wheelchair on the second set of pictures?

Princess Chulabhorn (the king's youngest sister) uses a wheelchair from time to time.
