Death and Funeral of The Duchess of Kent: 4 and 16 September 2025

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Here is the photo in question, but it's of the mothers (including the Duchess of Kent) with babies, not during pregnancy, so maybe there is another? I've never seen it before, and isn't it lovely? All four children were delivered by the same man - Sir John Peel. No wonder he ended up with a knighthood :)

Looking at the photos from the funeral, it's amazing how many family resemblances I see popping out. Lady Sarah Chatto looks like Princess Anne, one photo shows the Earl of Snowdon looking like King Charles, the two Kent brothers are carbon copies, and I initially thought a photo of Lord Frederick Windsor was Prince William. The genes are strong!

Who was the Lady next to the King on the steps ?
From the photos that I saw from the recessional, Princess Michael of Kent was behind the King. The Princess of Wales was next to him on his left.

I didn’t see any photos of Princess Alexandra there but did see her son with his family as well as Zenouska and Christian Mowatt.
You can see her here at 4:21:8 Feed from the Sun
She was driven away in her wheelchair right after the royal party stepped out of the cathedral. I wonder why she left so quickly, not waiting with the rest of her family for the hearse to leave. Maybe she was unwell, maybe she does not want to be seen in this state.
Prince Michael entered the cathedral on his feet but left in a wheelchair. That's good - no need to force yourself against your own body. Yesterday, he both entered and left the cathedral on his own. Well, not exactly on his own as he was helped by his son.

Unless she is quite seriously ill, I cannot imagine why Lady Nicholas Windsor was absent from the funeral of her mother in law. 🤔

Apparently she also missed the funeral of the late Queen as well. I presume she either has her own health issues which have prevented her from attending or that she and her husband have separated - though if that were the case, unless it was particularly nasty separation, I would expect she would possibly still attend anyway even if just not with her husband/the main family.

A lovely gesture from the Princess Royal and the Duchess of Edinburgh, who waved goodbye and blew a kiss to the Duke of Kent

Was he really mourning and if so, why was he grinning madly?
Again, unfair. There are photos of Andrew smiling/grinning and and also photos of him looking grim. There are photos of other members of the Royal Family and non-Royal mourners both smiling and looking grim.

That is just the moment in time snapped by the photographer. People smile even when sad.

People moved around so it depends on which photo you were looking at. I saw photos where the King was flanked by the Princess of Wales, Princess Michael, Lady Gabriella and Lady Frederick.

A note if I may about Andrew.

Between 1960 and 1966 there were 8 babies born - two to the late Queen, two to Margaret, two to the Duchess of Kent and two to Princess Alexandra (who attended yesterday, like Monday, in a wheelchair). The Queen decided to set up a schoolroom at Buckingham Palace for these children to get used to the idea of a classroom and school etc before actually going to school. That means that Andrew spent time, as children, with the Duke and Duchess of Kent's own elder two children. How friendly they were then or are now I have no idea but him attending a private family funeral of the mother of two children he has known all their lives isn't unexpected.

It was interesting to me that Prince Michael entered on a walking stick but exited in a wheelchair. Alexandra when in and out in a chair and both Princess Michael and the Duke used a stick.

Lovely to see not only Lady Helen but his grandsons sticking close to the Duke to assist him if needed.

It's not about smiling, it's about grinning madly - looking very strange. And he did so several times. Nobody else did. I saw this on video, so it wasn't just a second, and I also saw when he tried to talk to Prince William, who did not want to talk or joke with him. Once again Andrew grinned madly, completely unaware of the people surrounding him and how he will come across when the media publish his exaggerated grin.

Personally, I don't care that he is there if the Kents wish to invite him. But can he be trusted to behave? No. As always when he is invited somewhere, he does what he can to position himself in the centre. Add to that the huge grin at a funeral.

Thank you for posting the photo. This is the one I was thinking of of course they wouldn’t have shown anyone pregnant in those days.

All of the elder Kents with canes or wheelchairs. I was surprised to see prince Michael in a wheelchair

This clip can see the Princess Royal and Duchess of Edinburgh blew kisses, Sir Timothy waved goodbye to the Duke of Kent as he departed

Hope this is not off topic. There’s a royal family Christmas photo in 1971 which shows the Kents spending Christmas with the Queen and her family etc. they used to spend every Christmas together at Windsor until 1988 when Windsor was being renovated and there wasn’t enough room do everyone at Sandringham. So Andrew would have spent his childhood Christmases (and beyond) with the Kent family. He’s every right to be at the funeral. But yes he likes to place himself where everyone can see him.

The closeups of the Duke of Kent as the coffin left the cathedral were so heartbreaking to see, his eyes said it all :verysad:

Fergie being there is MEH as always but I guess everyone knows by now she's not going anywhere, so yeah, there is that

The Duke of Kent looked so bereft leaving the funeral Mass yesterday.
Also sad to see Prince Michael in such poor health .
There was a nice family gathering for the late duchess ,the likes of whom we shall sadly not see again.

It surprised me too and made me feel a bit sad - even though i realize it probably shouldn’t as he has obvious difficulties walking and needs to take it very slowly even with the help of a cane… Then a wheelchair is the better and most friendly option for longer distances…

But yes it’s still a sad reminder that the Kent’s are now the oldest branch of the british RF and, barring any great tragedies, the next branch that will leave us :(

I agree with you Hans-Rickard made me feel sad to see Prince Michael of Kent haveing difficulties yesterday.

This video has a close up of the Duchess of Edinburgh waving to the Duke of Kent at 11:44. I'm not a great lip reader but it looks as though she's asking him if he is ok.

where there any overseas royals present ... one of my friends old me he thought he saw Princess Caroline of Hanover ... not sure she was there at all.

Is she blowing a kiss to the Duke or LadyHelen? Lady Helen has always been close to Prince Edward, as mentioned above - so Sophie probably knows her well.

Imo, earl of snowdon and lady Sarah always resembled their father more. I was wondering who the lady with Lord Snowdon is.

Pope Leo sent a personal message that was read out at the Funeral Mass of the late Duchess of Kent

"I send heartfelt condolences, together with the assurance of my prayerful closeness, to Your Majesty, the members of the Royal Family, and especially to her husband, the Duke of Kent, and their children and grandchildren at this time of sorrow,"
Entrusting her noble soul to the mercy of our Heavenly Father,
I readily associate myself with all those offering thanksgiving to Almighty God for the Duchess’s legacy of Christian goodness, seen in her many years of dedication to official duties, patronage of charities, and devoted care for vulnerable people in society."

"To all who mourn her loss, in the sure hope of the Resurrection,"
I willingly impart my apostolic blessing as a pledge of consolation and peace in the Risen Lord."
Pope Leo

The Pope had also sent his deepest condolences to the King in a telegram to to Buckingham Palace.

The Coffin of the late Duchess was also placed infront of the Tomb of the late Cardinal Hume before being moved to the Chapel of Our Lady overnight.

I missed that one can you post it - cause he arrived with a lady looked older
It was part of the Daily Mail photographs published on line as people were arriving, it was David Lord Snowden with his daughter, I cannot find it now. Unless the Mail was showing old photographs as part of their presentation, it is not the first time they have done that and caused confusion. I never saw any other photographs of Snowden either arriving or leaving. I will keep looking.
