Death and Funeral of Princess Birgitta: December 2024

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Yes this will be a private family funeral, and no state occasion.

Unless the royal court allows their own photographer to take some pictures - we will at most see pictures from outside of the church, and from the car procession to the royal cemetery..
I'm sure poor Margareta Thorgren will inundated with queries on the funeral!

I imagine Princess Benedikte will represent Margrethe and Anne Marie.
Princess Benedikte will be on as ”Rigsforstander” on Sunday so she will be in Denmark.

Unless QMII has decided to go to Stockholm, i don’t think any of the sisters will attend..

At the website of the Royal Palaces:

Seraphim Toll on December 15th
HRH Princess Birgitta, sister of HM The King, will be honoured by a Seraphim Toll at the Riddarholmen Church on December 15th 2024.

At Instagram of the Royal Palaces:

”Svensk Damtidning” has rolling news updates from the funeral of Princess Birgitta all day long (in swedish but i expect there will be a lot of pictures)

Victoria and Daniel arrived before the press was there.

Princess Birgitta's friend said to Svensk Damtidning that the funeral service was very nicely arranged. Very calm and quiet. Worthy. He tells also that only the family attends the burial at the Royal Cemetery.

Svensk Damtidning's Helena Wiklund writes: "And now all the flower wreaths are carried out. The ones I've seen wear white. Perhaps Princess Birgitta's wish?"

90-100 guests at the funeral. The funeral service started at 11.00 and lasted about an hour.

The funeral service has ended and the coffin containing her ashes has left Drottningholm.

The King is now hosting the funeral guests for lunch at Drottningholm Palace, while the car procession that will take the guests to the Royal Cemetery at Hagaparken is being made ready.

Surprised to see Princess Désirée and her family turning up in a taxi?! Surely the King could have sent a car for them?

They are a very private family so i think they decided to come in a big taxi so the family could arrive together.

They will travel to the royal cemetery in pre-arranged cars now.

Interesting that her ashes are in a coffin and not in a Urn. Is that normal in Sweden?
It happens sometimes, but it’s much more common that urns are placed on a table and not in a coffin…

In this case i suspect that it has to do with how the Royal Cemetery is built..
But do we know for sure that the Princess has been cremated? It seems a bit silly to use a coffin for a bit of ashes.

Did anyone from the Danish RF attend?

No news about that so far. Since this was a private funeral, I don't think the court publishes a guest list. But for instance Victoria and Daniel, princess Christina and princess Margaretha arrived before the photographers came to Drottningholm.

Princess Birgitta was Carl Philip's godmother.

Expressen about Birgitta's life, with many nice photos

Leopold and Ursula of Bavaria were also at the funeral.

It was Birgittas own wish by her own words… And several of her friends (who also attended the service today) has stated that a cremation took place at Mallorca before she was taken to Sweden.

I read that in one of the many articles about the funeral - that she had already been cremated in Mallorca ahead of the funeral today.

The Royal Cemetery is open today at 11.00–14.00 for those who wish to visit Princess Birgitta's grave (The cemetery is open to the public only during the month May–August on Thursdays).
The press has also visited the grave, which is on a beautiful place looking over Brunnsviken. There are wreaths from the Norwegian Royal family and from queen Margrethe, queen Anne-Marie and princess Benedikte.

Beautiful wreaths also at prince Gustaf Adolf's grave.

Video from the grave today. There is also a wreath from the Riksdag and the Government.

I might have missed it, but Birgitta had three children, but we only saw her eldest son. Where were her other children, or the grandchildren?

I visited the Royal Cemetery at Hagaparken today.. It has been a sunny and beautiful day all day long here in Stockholm…

I thought Princess Birgitta was going to be interred in her parents grave - but she has a new grave with magnificent view over Lake Brunnsviken, just beneath her parents grave…

There was a lot of wreath’s from the children, the siblings, the danish and norwegian royal houses, the house of hohenzollern, the house of bavaria, some other Bernadotte’s, the friends at Mallorca (who had placed a golf ball at her grave), the swedish parliament and government etc…

Expressen tells that a mistake with the death certificate risked delaying the funeral.
The Spanish civil registry wrote the wrong date of birth on the death certificate and the embassy in Spain, with the consulate in Mallorca, therefore had problems flying the princess home to her final resting place. The Swedish funeral home also reacted to the fact that transport to Sweden has been booked, despite not having the necessary documents. The Spanish civil registry finally corrected the information in time and Princess Birgitta's body arrived in Sweden on December 13.
