Danish (State) Visits: General Discussion, Suggestions and Musings

I hope that there will be a State Visit to the Netherlands soon. The last one was in the 1970's to Queen Juliana. For some reason Queen Beatrix never invited Margrethe for a State Visit.

I didn't realise Margrethe II never paid a state visit to The Netherlands during Beatrix' reign. Quite odd indeed.

I am curious to see if the Netherlands will be receiving many incoming state visits the next years. In a few weeks we will have a new coalition government with an extreme-right party as it's largest partner. I imagine some countries will prefer to wait until that is over so they will not have to associate themselves with that. I do not know enough about Danish politics if such a visit would be considered controversial by the government.

I imagine the King may visit Germany soon. It will be an important partner and neighbour for Denmark. Of course Queen Margrethe II was there not too long ago, but considering Germany's importance in Europe it is a country they can't visit enough.

A state visit to the UK within the next couple of years would be wonderful.

I also never knew this but looked it up ,there was a Dutch State Visit to Denmark in 1984 but no return visit under Queen Beatrix.
Very Strange!

I doubt it would be considered controversial.
DK has been a hardliner for many years in regards to immigration, assimilation especially in regards to learning Danish and demands made on immigrants in regards to work or alternatively do some kind of work in return for social welfare.

And just today the intended new prime minister has been presented: the secretary-general (so a government official) of the Ministry of Security and Justice. So, I guess, that a relatively neutral PM (not a member of any political party) might things a little more easy for some countries as well - although, I agree that Denmark shouldn't be an issue, as their 'opt-out' is taken as an example of how to get things regarding a stricter asylum policy done in Brussels.

There's rumors that the new Icelandic president could visit Denmark this fall

Halla Tómmasdóttir assumes the office of President of Iceland in August, and a state visit to Denmark is very likely short after.

The current President also assumed office in August and made a state visit to Denmark January the following year.

Probably she will visit Denmark in January. Frederik should receive the German president maybe. The last time a German president visited Denmark was in 2002.

With the incoming state visit from Iceland in October, we can likely expect an incoming state visit from Finland in January or February…

Then it will be interesting to see where Frederiks and Marys first outgoing full state visits outside of the nordic region will go…

It could be to the Netherlands or Spain.

Hoping for a State Visit to Belgium... it's already 22 years since QMII visited. :(
IMO maybe Netherlands....then of course it could be to Japan. At some point I am sure that there will be a State Visit to Australia.

By looking at trading partners, wich most countries considers important nowdays when it comes to state visits, Netherlands is indeed a possible candidate, as Sweden and Norway has already been visited, and and a working visit to Germany will be made later this month, so i doubt a full state visit is planned there soon (though it will very likely happen in a not too distant future)

Could there actually be a state visit to a country whose head of state is sitting in London? Does Australia do state visits?

The King and Queen of Sweden paid a state visit to Australia and Governor General Michael Jeffery in 2005.

They also paid a state visit to Canada and Governor General Michelle Jëan in 2006 - and recived the then Canadian Governor General David Johnston and Viceregal consort Sharon Johnston on their state visit to Sweden in 2017… On the state visit banquet that evening, it was reported that the King of Sweden proposed two toasts instead of usually one. One toast for the Canadian Governor General, and one toast for the Canadian Head of State Queen Elizabeth II.

So it is definitely possible to pay a state visit to a Governor General.

Exactly, it's the Governor General, as the local representative of the head of state, that would be the host of any state visit to Australia (or any other country -except for the UK- of which Charles is head of state).

For 2025 I will not be shocked to see outgoing State Visits 1 or 2 of the following
1. Netherlands
2. Belgium
3. France maybe
4. Japan
5. Australia for obvious reasons

Incoming
1. Finland - I think that's a given.
2. Mexico? I know there was a state visit from Mexico in I think 2016 or 2017? But there is a newly elected President there.

I do wonder if the schedule of 2 outgoing and 2 incoming will be the normal schedule going forward

Frederik X and Mary already have state visits scheduled for this year!
The royal couple will travel on March 4 and 5 for a status visit to Finland. At the end of this month, from March 31 to April 2, the royal couple will make a status visit to France.

Interesting that the make a State Visit to Finnland. Had thought it would be the other way and the finish President first comes to Denmark as he came later in office

I also thought the DK-Finnish state visit would be in the other direction… The 5 nordic countries have usually followed the tradition of the newest head of state being the one who makes the first state visit so i was a little bit surprised

I thought so too that President Stubb would pay a state visit to Denmark first. But given that the last Danish state visit to Finland was in 1973, they maybe agreed that it was better to do it this way instead.

So Queen Margrethe paid only one State Visit to Finland? Wonder why as she made more then one 2 other countries

The visit in 1973 actually was an introduction visit, not a full state visit. Whereas the Scandinavian countries/monarchies got an introduction visit in 1973 and a state visit later, there never was a full state visit from Dk to Finland or to Iceland during Margrethe's reign, only from Finland and Iceland to Dk. Could be because those 2 Nordic countries had changing Presidents and they observed the rule of seniority too strictley? It seems that's another tradition Frederik decided to let go.

There were state visits from Finland to Denmark in 1977, 1983, 1994, 2001 and 2013. It was time for a state visit from Dk to Finland. Also the King and the President both started in the winter of the same year, only weeks apart (14 January - 1 March), not much seniority there.
