Danish State Visit to France: March 31 - April 2, 2025

Queen Mary did not wear a tiara or formal dress. The kings and the president of France did not wear formal clothes or orders. What a strange dress code for a gala dinner on a high-profile visit.

Always the same comments ( sometimes less than subtle) about the State Dinners in France. So, as usual, here 's some insights :

- The last white tie State banquet was held in France in 1981 at the end of the Giscard d'Estaing presidency (albeit some dinners were already business/black tie (even under Pompidou) depending on the guest ).

- Business was the norm under Mitterand (Socialist president) albeit some black tie exceptions (QEII and Beatrix for instance).

- Black tie was back with Chirac , under the influence of his wife, Bernadette, with sometimes business depending on the host.

- Mainly business with Sarkozy (some black tie here and there).

-Business all the way and no more long evening dresses for ladies (cocktail and even trousers) for socialist Hollande. Only one exception : QEII in 2014 ( black tie).

-Dark business and long evening dresses back with the Macrons, with one black tie exception to date (Charles III last year).

The last tiara outing in France was QEII in 2014 (black tie).

Thank you for the explanation as to the evolution of the dress codes.

what a shame that they didn't incorporate a more formal dress code for this state visit given that it is a royal state visit like the british one recently :( i would have been delighted for another opportunity for mary to rescue some long lost tiara to use :)

King Frederik in his speech emphasized the importance of standing together and that Denmark and France together guard democracy, justice and freedom.
"The fact that our defense industries are meeting these days in Paris is a testament to our common determination to strengthen our security-cooperation and together handle current and future challenges."

- Danish industry are looking to be subcontractors for the French defense industry. And as the French defense industry, be design, is almost untouched by US components a lot of the systems they have are of great interest. The major weakness of French weapons systems is on the other hand that they are developed parallel to almost all of the rest of NATO. Hence a considerable French interest in Danish software and designs.
The French are good at producing and developing complete systems. Denmark is good a developing and producing some of the advanced components to maximize the effects of the French systems.

Did President Macron speak about the late Prince Henrik in his Speech ?

On a side note the Macrons brought back the guests presentation as well (suppressed by Hollande).

Very good. Very well thought out speech.

Joachim worked as a defense attaché in Paris/France for a few years, so the family has intimate knowledge of their collaboration in this area.

Photos shared by the Queen Mary Foundation:

I believe that a meeting with Rachida Dati was not included in the scheduele, while meetings with another minister is listed. Perhaps her attendance was a surprise?

Lovely photos of the King and Queen with President and Mrs. Macron posted by Billed Bladet on thei Instagram. They seem to have quite a warm relationship.

The King and Queen accompanied by President Macron and Mrs. Macron attended the opening of the business conference. There are 56 Danish companies taking part. Both the King and President Macron gave speeches.

Nice video of their Majesties arriving to see the tapestries and being greeted by Mrs. Macron. You can also hear the King giving an impromptu thank you speech in French. Love it!!

Also, looking at the schedule for Day 2, nice to see President and Mrs. Macron accompanying their Majesties on so many of the engagements. Is that customary for them to do so?

Queen Mary's style has been praised in a number of media:
You will find the links in the article.
Queen Mary was the epitome of chic and high fashion on Day 1. She managed in her two outfits to give nods to France, Australia and Denmark. I also like the Australian brand she chose given what they stand for.

Here is a press release all a out the 16 tapestries with some photos

Love seeing all the photos. I really seems like the King and Queen and President and Mrs. Macron getting along very well and have a warm relationship. They appear to be enjoying each other's company attending all these events.

Billed Bladet has posted a short video of the hall where the return dinner is taking place...wow! It is stunning!!

Here is the link:
also - can anyone summarize what the Defense Minister says in this video re Frederik. Thanks! -

From he Embassy of Denmark in France

Frederik and Mary gave an interview

Love that Frederik switches to French seamlessly. And its great that they can both answer press questions.

More from the DRF

also - can anyone summarize what the Defense Minister says in this video re Frederik. Thanks! -

From his facebook
"I become proud of Denmark again and again when I see King Frederik and Queen Mary representing our country. And here in France it's even more magnificent.
The King's competences show themselves in many ways: In serious conversations about an uncertain world with political leaders, when he curiously listens to Danish companies and in the open approach to Danish and French press. It's great - and serves honor to the Royal Couple.
The royal couple is accompanied by a large Danish business delegation, which to my delight also consists of a large number of Danish defense companies. A close European cooperation is absolutely essential."

For native French-speakers: How is King Frederik's French?

ADDED: Just in. DK and France has signed an agreement in regards to common procurement of defense materiel.
DK has a similar agreement with the Nordic countries.

- That is aiming a standardization and bulk purchases and military equipment and weapons. That helps to keep the prices down and the more standard equipment that is used the easier it is to keep logistics flowing and find spare parts and repair facilities and borrow from each other.

The King's French is excellent. He speaks like a native, uses specific idioms etc. It's not an academic French in a way like King Felipe, it is a lot more relaxed, have maybe more "life" but you can tell that he is not using it as much (he speaks like fluent people do after they have used another language for too long and then they have to rewire their brains :D)

Bille August, movie director, sat at the main table with President Macron and King Frederik and he noticed that Greenland was discussed at the tables and that a good deal of sympathy was expressed by the French. Politics is normally not discussed at the tables and such dinner, but they were this time.

I think it would have been impossible not to discuss Greenland.

Pictures from tonight's dinner

Fredrik's speech tonight was given in English and ending with some French.

More Pictures from tonight's dinner:

Did the president or Mrs Macron attend the return event tonight?

Did the president or Mrs Macron attend the return event tonight?
No. Theyre were not due to attend. The Macrons tend to prefer to spend the whole second day with their guests instead of a simple dinner ( it was already the case with the visits from Luxembourg, UK and Belgium).French representatives were invited though.

I agree, this State Visit has been wonderful. Great connection between France and Denmark.

Some more pics

Danish company Sima entered into a cooperation agreement with French military company during royal visit

Amazing Pics from the Notre Dame

A video from the DRF to end the state visit

hits the right tone.

It has been a wonderful visit. I agree that there appears to be a very warm relationship between the King/Queen and President and Mrs. Macron.

Lovely to see that President and Mrs. Macron joined them at Notre Dame.

It was a packed 3-day visit with very important business happening behind the pomp, circumstance and the formalities of a state visit.

This is State Visit #6 for their majesties after the change of throne and they are doing a wonderful job! You can tell they got alot of experience making these types of trips at the "official visit" level and know what the job and assignment is. And, imo, this was their heaviest state visit to date, if that makes sense. Kudos to them and their team!!

Adding video stream of visit to Notre Dame. The video over an hour long

Also, BT article praising Frederik's speech and his French.

Despite all the naysaying the Macrons are definitely superb hosts : a subtle mix of tradition, pump and friendly hospitality.

You can moan endlessly about the "good ol'days" and the glorious bejewelled white tie state dinners, the fact is it's not the case in France anymore. Period.

That's said i do think the Macrons found the right balance between tradition and modernity, not without a certain elegance and panache, but without being too over the top, avoiding too much raised eyebrows from the always suspicious French general public (critics being unavoidable in that times and age though).

State visits were certainely upgraded since 2017, especially after the ascetic years of the Hollande Presidency.
