King Frederik and Queen Mary will pay a state visit to Australia
from March 14th to March 19th, 2026, it was confirmed today.

Their Majesties The King and Queen will undertake a state visit to Australia from 14 March to 19 March 2026. The Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, and the Minister for Climate, Energy, and Utilities will accompany The King and Queen along with a large business delegation.

The purpose of the state visit is to further develop the already strong relations between Australia and Denmark, both culturally, economically, and in terms of foreign policy. A strengthened partnership with Australia is particularly important at a time when geopolitical shifts have economic and security implications that link developments in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region. Building on the strategic partnership between Australia and Denmark signed in 2023, the state visit aims to enhance cooperation across a broad range of areas, including the green transition and economic security.

Business delegation with a green focus
Green transition will be a key focus of the visit. Fifty-five accompanying Danish companies will participate in the official business promotion initiative “Partnering for a Green, Secure and Sustainable Tomorrow.” The initiative is intended to promote cooperation in the fields of renewable energy and energy-efficient urban development.

Finally, Denmark and Australia share an interest in nature and cultural conservation and elements related to nature and culture will form part of the state visit.
The full programme for the state visit to Australia will be announced at a later date.

Per this Press Release, a large contingent of Danish Industry will also be taking part

Press Release from the Danish Ambassador to Australia. Did not realize it has been 40 years since the last Danish State Visit to Australia. I anticipate this visit will garner alot of attention and press in Australia

It will be interesting to see where the couple end up going.

South Australia is generating so much electricity from household rooftop solar panels and the wind farms there, that they regularly have to stop the input as the system can’t handle it … despite shipping power to Victoria.

It would be nice if Tassie was included officially. It has been on renewable energy for generations through the Hydro.

Canberra looks likely going on what the Prime Minister said a few weeks back … his wife being excited etc.

And then they’ve put a photo of Uluṟu in the official announcement, so maybe that means something. And Melbourne is mentioned in the Danish Industry release.

Australian tv has announced the places the couple will visit here … the Northern Territory, the ACT, Victoria and Tasmania.

“Pulse Tasmania” is reporting that a royal procession through the Salamanca area of Hobart is planned.

I have been looking forward to this sincé they became the Regent Couple. I guess there is a small chance Josephine and/or Vincent will come with them but it is admittedly very small.

Maybe Muhler … family and all that.

I do think there may be something official with “Incat” in Hobart.

They have just … December 2025 … signed a contract with Danish company Molslinjen to build a third electric high speed ferry for one of your country’s busiest transport corridors.

The first two ferries are still being completed, so it must be a good relationship between the two companies that they are going for a third vessel.

The Danish company want to lead the way in the decarbonisation of Europe’s high-speed ferry services … and this would bring a lot of attention, the presence of Denmark’s King and Queen.

I read a lot of the Australian media coverage of the announcement of the tour yesterday … all saying the same thing really.

But, also the comments from the general public … especially on the Facebook accounts of the newspapers and tv channels.

The Tasmanians posting under the various reports all seemed extremely happy about the visit.

(A few naysayers too, of course.)

And a lot of people from the mainland states commented as well.

A few people commented that they had gone to school with Mary.

One person wrote that they have an old VHS tape of her playing the clarinet in the school concert.

One that struck me was from someone saying they were once served a coffee by Mary … when she worked in the cafe in Salamanca in her Uni days I assume.

They called her their “kind-hearted waitress” in their comment, which I found striking.

I can see the about to be completed University of Tasmania’s “The Forest” … a learning-hub in Hobart’s CBD which has been described as a “landmark adaptive re-use project” … might be on the couple’s agenda.

Not only Mary’s old University, but one of the founders, a long time ago, of the construction company was Danish … and the “green” ideas underlying it fit the tour’s theme.

And I just saw the head of the Incat company I mentioned above is the “Honorary Consul for Denmark” in Tasmania, so a nice tie-in if the couple go there.

Pity the couple aren’t coming to Sydney … a Danish company designed our just opened new fish market, the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere. (Costing over eight hundred thousand Oz dollars.)

Who knew the Danes were so busy down here amongst us.

Here is the Danish Ambassador to Australia speaking about the tour … including that this will be the largest Danish business contingent to accompany a State Visit.

It is an unusually long state visit but i guess it has to do with the distance from Denmark so it is better to prepare an as packed schedule as possible… It is after all not a distance you travel often from here unless you really loves to fly long-distance….

Hopefully there will be time for Mary to go and see her family too… Especially her father who at 84 can no longer make it to Denmark… I wouldn’t be surprised if she will stay for some extra days after the state visit has concluded for some family time while Frederik travels back to Denmark before her.

I often wonder how royalty deal with jetlag in connection with official visits! Now, King Frederik and Queen Mary may have a strategy to handle the problem on their travels to OZ, which so far have been mainly private! However when arriving in an official capacity, royalty is usually welcomed at the airport, inspecting a guard of honour and then wheeled away for a short rest before embarking on the official programme. How do they do it?

(I don’t handle big time differences well, and when I flew to Australia in 2024, I had to make a stopover in SE Asia, before embarking on the final leg to Sydney. Otherwise, I would have been a complete zombie……. :) )

Queen Camilla has been reported as flying into Australia early, ahead of King Charles, and staying on their friend’s country property … can’t remember the family’s name, but somewhere in outback NSW I think … for a while to recover ahead of the official start of a tour.

Frederik and Mary may travel from Denmark to Thailand or such, and have a few days to themselves, and then be taken on one of our official planes to arrive here … rather than just arrive in Australia on a commercial flight.

They’ve been flown around on a plane from our airforce in the past when going to many spread out places.

I think they will arrive in the ACT first for all the Federal Government stuff … the official welcome, the War Memorial, Government Reception etc.

Then be flow by an official plane to the Northern Territory, down to Melbourne and finish in Tasmania where some downtime with Mary’s family can happen.

It sounds like this tour … the number of days and the size of the business contingent accompanying them … is really a major undertaking for both Denmark and Australia.

I think there will be massive coverage in the media here and that the lovely Danish Ambassador to Australia may travel about with them too.

Well, considering it’s an official visit, arriving in Canberra makes sense! - I doubt that they’ll visit Uluru, unless they can squeeze in a short stop en route from e.g. Northern Territory to Melbourne!

Can anyone explain how the protocol works when a state visit occurs to a country where King Charles is the HoS. Does the GG just stand in for him?

When it is a Head of Government the Prime Minister of Australia is involved, fifty military Guard of Honour and nineteen gun salute … at Parliment House in Canberra.

When it is Royalty the Governor-General of Australia is host, one hundred military Guard of Honour and twenty-one gun salute … at Government House in Canberra, “Yarralumla”. (Where Mary and Frederik will probably stay if they are in the ACT overnight.)

I don’t know if this formality will be followed to the letter though Lord-of-the-Manor.

Our Prime Minister seemed to jump the gun and drop the news of the visit into a very casual radio chat … I think catching Denmark un-prepared, who then had to stay quiet until they were able to confirm it as soon as possible at the end of the State Visit to Lithuania. (And following a bit of info from Ekstra Bladet.)

The Premier of Tasmania posted on his personal Facebook about it saying something along the lines of “letting everyone know” something was happening, but he missed the mark and that came out after all the media announcements. (Which all seemed to come out at the same time, so there must have been an embargo or set time for everyone together.)

Anyway, I can see our Federal politicians, and the local ones wherever the couple end up going, all piling on in an enthusiastic rah, rah, rah situation.

The breakfast tv shows will be all over every moment.

We might get live cross-overs from a couple of the tv channels throughout each day.

Many Oz media people will be reporting going on past official visits … reporting on all the official stuff, but also if Mary goes dress shopping anywhere etc.

We’re ready for something upbeat after Bondi and the shark attacks. Good weather will bring out the crowds, especially any public-facing events on the weekend.

Protocol might get a bit slack once the first formal day is over.

The “NT News” newspaper reported a few hours ago that the couple will be visiting “the Red Centre” of the Northern Territory.

That is the area of Alice Springs, Uluṟu/Ayers Rock, Kata Tjuṯa/The Olgas and Kings Canyon.

(Not a suprise when the Royal House made the official announcement of the State Visit to Australia against a photo of Uluṟu/Ayers Rock.)

A great pity that Perth will miss out. To crown it all I will be out of the country when their visit takes place. I will have to follow the media reports intensely.

Perhaps they will visit Perth privately? Doesn't Queen Mary's brother live in Perth?

The Danish Embassy in Australia is taking part in today’s Multicultural Festival … and really seem to be promoting the upcoming State Visit.

Here is their booth with photos of not just Frederik and Mary, but the children as well.

And passersby could get a gold crown too if they followed the Embassy’s social media.

They're not coming to Adelaide either. The last non-British Royal to visit Adelaide was King Carl Gustaf way back in 2005, where he was visiting SAAB Systems

Mary's home state of Tasmania will be part of the royal tour.
"The King and Queen of Denmark will visit Tasmania as part of their upcoming Royal visit to Australia.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the State will host the final leg of the Royal visit in March."

The last official visit to Tasmania had been in 2005. They have of course visited privately since then
