Is the Christmas reception for staff a new event or perhaps I missed it in the past?

And a fridge covered with magnets, so typical.
Marie can't talk her way out of being mother to Athene! No chance of a swap at the maternity ward.
It's clearly a flæskesteg (roast pork) a must at Christmas time Marie is holding. She said in an interview years ago it had become her favorite Danish dish.
I so much look forward to shoveling it down on Christmas Eve.
Here is a better look:
The traditional version with thick (and almost not at all fattening...) gravy, white and glazed potatoes, red cabbage and cucumber-salad.

We're familiar with crispy roast pork with crackling here too, it's delicious! I've cooked it several times myself. We usually serve it with red cabbage and dumplings. Cucumber salad as additional sidedish is also a good idea, I'll remember that :) .

I think Athena is growing into a resemblance to her father, too.

A wonderful and rare video of Margrethe and Frederik was shared today!

Mother and son ♥️

It's never too late to learn how to braid a Christmas heart ❤️

After a lunch at Her Majesty Queen Margrethe's at Fredensborg Palace, His Majesty the King and Queen Margrethe had to cut and braid Christmas hearts, because the King didn't quite master the art last year in Den Gamle By in Aarhus.

It's a delightful video.
King Frederik went to the Old Town open air museum in Aarhus last year and there he tried to make a Christmas-heart - and failed... So he went to his mother who must be considered the expert in such matters. - Except she isn't. She hasn't been able to figure out how to make those hearts, so she didn't teach her boys how to do it.
The video starts with FX showing how miserably he did last year.
They begin and QMII needs her own scissor because "they know each other".
She remarks to the crew: "I know it will take a long time, but then You'll (formal You) just have to edit."
Of course FX doesn't get the template right, so mother has to intercede: Do it again! (You clumsy boy, you! No, she doesn't actually say that, but it was in her tone.)
Both of them fumble a bit, with QMII exclaiming with a smile: "This is slightly ridiculous."
QMII is quite impressed with herself, sort off... for almost having made a quarter of a heart: "Isn't it impressive." - The royal dachshund isn't impressed, but asleep.
FX finished his heart first. - He offered to cut the handle for her. No! She'll manage. - Stubbornness runs in the family...
Towards the end QMII says: "It's hard to be a nissemand." (A kind of Christmas-pixie.) Every single Dane will understand that reference. It's to an immensely popular Christmas calendar series in 24 parts as a count down to Christmas. For adults. And one of the running gags was that some of the characters spoke Danglish. - That's of course a kind of humor that will appeal to QMII. Some of the lines in that show have been adopted into everyday Danish. Including by QMII.
And at the end they put in treats, which was the original purpose of such a heart.

A delightful video that especially show QMII's personality.

What an absolutely delightful video. Lovely seeing mother and son enjoying themselves together. Both their personalities come through here. Love it! One thing the new royal couple have done exceptionally well is to make sure that QMII is still very involved. She is still the matriarch of the family, has her engagements and participates in big royal events. She is beloved and people still want to see her.

Very much actually. This video has of course been commented on and it has been noted that it has already got more likes/comments (Haven't checked myself) than the one with the Regent Couple's children, which was also very well liked.
QMII has in many ways gone from being the queen of the tribe to being the grandmother of the tribe.
When she was still the monarch, she was more respected than like, which is not the same as her being disliked, she was simply immensely respected.
Today she is, I think I can say with certainty, genuinely popular and she is popular for being Margrethe, the grandmother and she is also liked for all the quirks that comes with being older.
She is more herself now that she isn't "aunt queen" anymore.
That must be a relief and delight for her family.

It is a wonderful video of mother and son. Never too old to spend some time with your parent, making new memories that maybe you didn't get to create when younger.
While Frederik and Mary are the new royal couple at the head of the DRF, it's very heart warming to see how Margrethe is still included in a natural way.

Very well said Muhler!
More lovely photos shared by the DRF

Nice to see mother and son in a more familiar and natural - and less pompous and duty-filled atmosphere…

You are never too old to spend time with your parents… The only thing you will regret is what you did not do, the day when you no longer have the chance…

The Danish royal family never publish their photos for christmas cards, don't they?

"On Christmas Eve, Amalienborg is beautiful, with Frederik VIII's Palace in particular lit up and creating the most wonderful Christmas atmosphere. A very special family Christmas is planned for King Frederik and Queen Mary, their children and Queen Margrethe."

Nice pictures

some insight on the gingerbread house competition with the kids from the communications director. Love that it was the kids' own idea.
Indeed. They came up with the idea themselves. And that includes Christian and Vincent's idea about hiding a ready made ginger-bread house for their sisters.
The communications department sets up the camera, lighting and sound and then it's one take to be edited later.
So the videos are edited but not scripted and without retakes if something doesn't work.

It seems Nina has gotten the critic that is comming that the royal family is too pre-edited, so now she wants everyone to belive this of how teenagers spend their advent time when they Get to choose all by them self.

They all love Margrethe and Frederik video.

Interesting because I can think of Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Beatrix both being known to reject the idea they were ever expected to "act". QE2 apparently said "I'm not an actress" once and Beatrix was unhappy at being asked to "redo" the swearing in of ministers to suit the TV cameras saying it "just becomes an act". I do think royalty need to tread carefully - if they are felt to be just "acting" then why not just have an actor employed as HoS but, with the rise in social media a lot of people are creating "staged" scenarios on their profiles so I guess the question is where to draw the line - is putting a camera in front of the children and asking them t do something so fake, or just creating a social media opportunity?
