The Swedish Embassy in Japan wrote:
Hello, Japan!
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria arrived in Osaka today, beginning a six-day visit to Japan.
During her visit, she will travel around Japan, experiencing its rich nature and culture, and meeting people from a wide range of fields.
Sweden and Japan have built a long-standing, close relationship based on shared values and mutual respect.
By inspiring each other and deepening our collaboration, our friendship transcends borders and serves as a force for innovation and hope for the world.

Svensk Damtidning updates live and reporter Helena Wiklund wrote that the Court's Deputy Director of the Information Department Johan Tegel wrote that "We are very late". It is about "problems with logistics". However, it is not about a delayed flight. Victoria took the morning plane to Paris yesterday morning, and landed in Osaka earlier today..

And Victoria has arrived, Osaka offers sun and 28 plus. "It's warmer than I thought!", says Victoria.

Victoria found herself in front of a wall of green Hello Kittys where each cat would correspond to an important algae. Hello Kitty is one of Japan's great export successes.
When a press photographer wondered if Victoria had chosen her green pantsuit to match the green wall, Victoria couldn't resist a joke.
- Yes, I thought I would be like a Hello Kitty, she said and laughed.
She met Japanese schoolchildren who are working for a better environment in various ways. The students inspired her so much that she changed her opening speech at the Sweden-Japan Sustainability Summit business forum.
The green pantsuit was of course not about the Japanese export success Hello Kitty. The choice of clothing was an environmental message.
– I try, says Victoria and smiles.

Victoria visited the UN Pavilion
We were honored to welcome H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden to the UN Pavilion during her visit to @expo2025japan today... Her Royal Highness participated in a talk event focused on Sustainable Development Goal 14 #SDG14: Life Below Water. I am surprised there is no scheduled meeting with the Emperor and the Empress. A short courtesy call would be expected given that they are in Japan on an official visit.

According to the first post in this thread, there will be a dinner with the emperor and empress. Based on the schedule, it seems most likely the dinner will take place on October 14 when they are in Tokyo but don't have other activities scheduled.

A side note (please move to the topical thread if one exists), but I wonder if and how the Imperial Household Agency will translate Prince Daniel’s title this time around. Back in 2010, they evidently could not think of a decent translation and simply did not refer to him with a title, merely as “Daniel denka” (equivalent to “HRH Daniel”).

This time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release in the Japanese version refers to him as “ouji”, which is the most common translation of “prince”, but as its literal meaning is “ruler’s child”, it is a questionable choice in Daniel’s case, in my non-Japanese opinion (which was apparently shared by the translator for the IHA in 2010).

Reunited in Japan. Then Victoria immortalized the moment with a picture. Outside the world-famous Chichu Art Museum, she took the opportunity to take a picture of her husband, as photography was prohibited inside the exhibition halls.
- You are great, said Victoria to Daniel.
Victoria also appreciated the art museum, both the architecture of the building, designed by the Japanese Tadao Ando, and the Monet paintings that were displayed in natural light.
In rooms created by Tadao Ando, Daniel joked warmly with the photographers who so obviously wanted to take pictures in the beautiful surroundings, and also talked to them about the similarity between Japanese and Nordic design.

Nice to see Victoria wearing the Rodebjer dress at the dinner with the Governor of Kagawa, Toyohito Ikeda.

Svensk Damtidning tells that Victoria and Daniel are staying at Benesse House on Naoshima Island.
They visited the famous Chichu Museum, ranked as one of the world's best travel destinations. It was important to be there before it started to get dark, since all the works – including several by Monet – are displayed in natural light.
– So beautiful. You can understand that there was a rush not to miss the sunlight, said Victoria.

Swedish Ambassador Viktoria Li hosted a small and very exclusive dinner for Governor Toyohito Ikeda, with Victoria and Daniel among the 15 guests.

Sunday began with an unusually relaxed dress code, at least for an official visit: Victoria wears jeans to work. She took photos of Daniel and they have also tried riding an electric bike, like many other Japanese people.
Victoria: —Ikimashō! Now we're going!

The Royal House:
After concluding Sweden's involvement in the World Expo in Osaka, the Crown Princess, together with Prince Daniel, traveled to the islands of Naoshima and Teshima in the Japanese Inland Sea over the weekend to take part in the Setouchi Art Triennial and visit museums.
Kagawa Governor Toyohito Ikeda met the Crown Princess and the Prince on Naoshima last night and welcomed the Crown Princess Couple to the prefecture.
Tomorrow, the Crown Princess and Prince Daniel will visit Hiroshima together with the Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Crown Princess Couple's official trip will then continue to Tokyo.

Along the way, the couple stopped several times to talk to the locals. Victoria smiled warmly and made small gestures to understand and be understood, while Daniel stood by, nodding appreciatively.
As they left, both young and old waved at them—a sign that their genuine manner touched the hearts of everyone they met.
An elderly woman who lived along the trail later told a Japanese reporter:
“They were so down to earth. You could tell they really cared about people.”

Victoria told to the press about a local children's choir's surprise at the EXPO. The Japanese children had not only learned "Ida's Summer Song", they also surprised Victoria by singing parts of Astrid Lindgren's classic in Swedish. And when the children sang with a Japanese accent, Victoria was moved to tears.
Victoria said: How much they must have practiced for this! Singing "Ida's Summer Song" in Swedish with absolutely perfect pronunciation is absolutely incredible. But also hearing it in Japanese felt very powerful.
On Sunday Victoria and Daniel cycled between various famous works in Teshima, and spoke to the locals who have seen their island revitalized. They were particularly taken by the artist Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa's initiative Teshima Art Museum, a white building with natural light where you can silently follow the movement of water droplets on the floor.
Families sat in their socks on the floor, without phones or other screens, and just followed the water droplets for a long time. Victoria said that was a fantastic experience. It was fascinating to see how even the children inside became so calm and quiet. Daniel said that it was incredible, one would love to see a similar initiative in Sweden.

They were walking through the narrow alleys of Naoshima, and suddenly there they were: Two Japanese old women and their cat. It was an unforgettable meeting, because body language goes a long way. A story that Estelle and Oscar will definitely hear when mom is home again.
– Getting to come out and see this traditional way of life, I really appreciate that, says Victoria.
Daniel said about the bike ride that it was lucky that it was electric, because it was very hilly...
About watching the water droplets move at Teshima Art Museum, Daniel said that it was the coolest thing he has ever seen in his entire life. It was so special he'll fail if he tries to describe it.

Today Victoria and Daniel have travelled to Hiroshima, where they met Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui and visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and laid a wreath. They were joined by the Mayor and the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard.

It was at this exact spot that the atomic bomb was dropped, on August 6, 1945. Victoria and Daniel are here to show their respect and honor the memory of the 200,000 people who lost their lives.
They brought with them a very special greeting from Estelle and Oscar.
They have been sitting at home in Haga and folded two small paper cranes - a classic symbol in Japan for a long and eternal life. And now these origami cranes have traveled more than 1,000 miles - to then be placed on the memorial stone in Hiroshima by mother Victoria and father Daniel.
Yes, it was an emotional Victoria who laid the wreath with blue and yellow ribbons. And then spoke:
- I am so touched.

Victoria and Daniel are now in Tokyo.
They attended a reception at Hotel Okura hosted by the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo. Victoria gave a speech.
Princess Takamado attended also the reception, at the photos we can see Victoria hugging her.
Profimedia gallery

Victoria and Daniel brought two paper cranes from Estelle and Oscar and left them at the monument of the Japanese girl Sadako Sasaki who died at the age of twelve from leukemia, sequelae of the atomic bomb. The Minister for Foreign Affairs brought also origami cranes from her children.
According to a Japanese legend, whoever folds a thousand paper cranes will have their wish fulfilled. The girl folded cranes during her illness to recover, but only managed to finish 644 before she died, Sadako's schoolmates then folded the rest after her death. Since then, people from all over the world have left paper cranes at Sadako's statue.
Victoria was visibly moved when she handed over the cranes, and during a visit to the Hiroshima Museum she saw gruesome photos of victims. “The pain,” she said several times.
– We were very moved by this, these are impressions that we will carry with us forever, Victoria said in a meeting with the mayor of Hiroshima.

The Royal House tells about the reception at the ambassador's residence that among the guests were besides princess Takamado, also this year's two Japanese Nobel Prize winners.

Although the atomic bomb was indeed horrendous and a plea for peace is always good, I think it is important to also remember what led to this bomb. The Japanese government apologised in 1995 for the millions of people that they murdered, tortured and raped. But AFAIK there is no monument or memorial to them in Japan.

Daniel visited in the morning the University of Tokyo for a meeting with kidney researchers:
Prince Daniel, husband of the Crown Princess of Sweden and a kidney transplant recipient exchanged views with kidney experts on the current state of kidney transplants and treatment in Japan and Europe.
Prince Daniel met with Professor Masaomi Minami, a kidney disease expert and Dean of the University of Tokyo's School of Medicine.
Professor Minami introduced Prince Daniel to his joint research on kidney disease with Swedish universities. He also explained that while Japan performs a similar number of living donor kidney transplants per capita as the United States and some European countries, there are few cases of transplants from individuals who have been declared cardiac or brain dead.
Prince Daniel said: "In Sweden, many patients who request a transplant are able to receive one within a few years, and approximately 85% of the population has expressed their intention to donate their organs after death."
In a NHK interview Prince Daniel said: "I think it is extremely important to raise awareness of the current situation in which many people around the world are suffering from kidney disease, and to lead to early detection and to review people's diets to prevent the disease from becoming serious."

The Royal House tells at its article about today:
Victoria visited the Officers' College, a briefing was given on the situation in the region and the participation of women in the defense.
Daniel visited the University of Tokyo for a meeting with kidney researchers.
In the afternoon, Victoria and Daniel met the embassy's staff and thanked for the work that the embassy's seconded and locally employed staff do for Sweden.
Then Victoria and Daniel visited Teamlab Borderless. After that they met representatives of the organization Nihon Hidankyo, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 2024, which brings together survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
The Emperor and Empress welcomed Victoria and Daniel to dinner at the Imperial Palace, the dinner concluded their official visit to Japan.

President Truman's decision to drop the two atomic bombs on Japan is traditionally justified based on the argument that "Japan would not surrender" and, thus, dropping bombs was the quickest way to end the war and avoid further deaths. That is debatable and controversial today. Personally I do not think that Japan's actions during the war per se justified to use of atomic weapons, and even more so when the war in Europe had already ended and the war in the Pacific was, in the worst case scenario, close to an end (despite claims to the contrary by the U.S. government).

Since Victoria and especially Daniel are very interested in art, the visits to many art museums were surely something special for them. Maybe Daniel got some ideas for the Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation?

My favourite photo from this visit:

Svensk Damtidning's reporter Helena Wiklund interviewed Victoria twice in Japan: In Naoshima and at the teamLab Borderless in Tokyo.

Victoria is very interested in Japanese culture. To see the more traditional way of life, like in the Naoshima village, she really appreciates that. Such a varied country, with nature and culture. And the food is fantastic.
It is fun to bring something home from her travels, Wiklund had seen her bags.
Everyone who has met her says the same thing: She has undertaken this visit with great warmth and enthusiasm. A truly sharp representative of Sweden. And she has had Prince Daniel by her side. It must be wonderful to be a team?
– Yes, indeed! This is also Daniel's first trip to Japan. So it is extra fun.

Nice "behind the scenes" article in Svensk Damtidning today, November 2. Stories and photos by Svensk Damtidning's reporter Helena Wiklund.

When Victoria and Daniel left the very exclusive Benesse House hotel on Naoshima Island, the hotel staff was lined up outside the entrance, they started applauding as soon as Victoria and Daniel came out of the lobby. The hotel doesn't have any ordinary star rating. People come here for the sublime experience and for the discreet luxury. Victoria and Daniel stayed in one of the eight suites with a sea view.
