Following the release of new documents in the Epstein case yesterday, the Palace has confirmed to NRK that Mette-Marit has "borrowed Epstein's house in Palm Beach through a mutual friend".
"The Crown Princess stayed there with a friend for four days, said the Palace's communications manager Guri Varpe to NRK. During this visit, Mette-Marit met Jeffrey Epstein at his home.


Crown Princess Mette-Marit made an extra statement, saying:
"Jeffrey Epstein is responsible for his actions. I must take responsibility for not checking Epstein's background better and for not understanding quickly enough what kind of person he was. I deeply regret that, and this is a responsibility I must take. I showed poor judgment and regret having any contact with Epstein at all. It is simply embarrassing".

Thanks for the article. Having breakfast together seems more than just a vague person you know. The texts in the article show he took her somewhere to bleach her teeth and to a Prada shop. He even met the children if I understand the messages correctly.

It seems her friendship during this time was closer than was known until now.

Do we remember if this was the same period when there were some bizarre rumours going around online about marriage problems? IIRC Bill Gates was even mentioned at the time.

All the meetings and vacations seem to be outside regular vacation periods. One wonders how it overlaps with her limited public activities at the time. I imagine Norwegian newspapers will put some investigative journalists on this.

The rumor that Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit were on the verge of divorce became prominent online in 2013 and was even obliquely referenced in the Norwegian news media at the time.

The more lurid rumors that the (alleged) marital problems involved infidelity on the wife's part did attract social media talk or speculation about Bill Gates, which is a bit easier to understand now. I do not mean I believe Bill Gates had an extramarital affair with the Crown Princess - just that the internet speculation/rumor is not as bizarre and out of nowhere as it seemed in 2013, given that the recent email release shows that both Mr. Gates and the Crown Princess were (along with Mr. Epstein) indeed part of the same social circle.

Personally I think there was something nefarious going on with Bill Gates and that's why his wife Melinda divorced him. As for the Crown Princess I think a lot of famous people went to his parties without knowing what was really going on with Epstein and the trafficking and this bought him the legitimacy he needed and others (looking at you Andrew) took advantage of the situation.

I find it consistently astonishing what a global network Epstein developed, encompassing politicians, prime ministers, presidents, billionaires, and members of various European royal families.

Even if not every one of these people who knew him or were even friends with him was fully aware that he sexually exploited underage girls and invited rich and influential men to orgies on his island, although the first charges against him were filed in the late 1990s.
But by 2005 at the latest, when the charges against him became public and led to his conviction in 2008, everyone who had contact with him should have been aware of it. This was reported internationally. To maintain contact with him and be on friendly terms after this revelation, as is revealed now with Mette-Marit, is morally highly questionable and disappointing.

Remember all of this went on after his conviction in 2008 for procuring a child for prostitution and of soliciting a prostitute. That certainly makes MM's choice to remain close enough to him to feel comfortable using his home for 4 days a questionable one, IMO.

I agree with your point hereditarytitles and also I think it was disgraceful the plea deal he got. I think Epstein was a mastermind at reading people and was charming enough to talk his way into persuading people what he wanted them to hear/believe. Some people walked away after the conviction and others turned a blind eye. Money has a way of doing that sadly.

I agree. Melinda has even implied that she divorced Bill Gates because of something to do with Epstein, though she didn't give the exact details. But we can all imagine what that has to do with and with the new details even more so.

Melinda has also said that she went to Epstein's house once and never again, and was disturbed by what she saw there. That is also why I would question what Mette-Marit might have seen while staying at his house. Trafficked girls and women were at Epstein's houses all the time. Maybe not when Mette-Marit was there, I don't know, but the question has to be asked.

All of these people - Mette-Marit, Andrew & Fergie, Bill Gates, and many others (the list is certainly long) - have attempted to downplay their connection to Epstein. For obvious reasons, I suppose. But now that the files are being published, the evidence actually points to something else.

Though I would not put Mette-Marit in the same category as Andrew and Bill Gates, of course. But do I think she down played a friendship to distant acquaintances in her statement a couple of years ago? Yes.

I think you are right Hans-Rickard with everyone thinking this would blow over and there would be another news story on the front pages the next day. Also his plea deal was ridiculous that it would be easy for him to downplay the charges. People hear what they want to hear. And before I go way off track I think this is pretty much always the case with these girls/young women-who is going to believe them. Someone poor from a broken home or these wealthy influential people. Epstein kept a lot of "receipts" on the people around him and now they are being released. He was no dummy.

Laurent of Belgium and Countess Alexandra (former wife of Prince Joachim of Denmark) were also mentioned in the files, but they never met Epstein or ever met with him. The most disturbing thing to me, from reading all of the above messages, is that if Melinda Gates saw things that made her never want to visit an Epstein home again, then MM surely saw the same things. No, not all of the mentioned royals had the same level of (known) contact or acquaintanceship with Jeffrey Epstein.

But the point I tried to make was that, even when it was already known that a royal met Jeffrey Epstein (as was already the case with Mette-Marit, Sofia, and Sarah, thus "same applies"), further disclosures still have the potential to be reputationally damaging if they reveal that the acquaintanceship was closer than previously thought.

(I am not saying that the mentioned royals' reputations will definitely be further damaged, however: Time will tell.)

Assuming "Mette" is indeed the Crown Princess of Norway (there are not many people named Mette in the USA, and I am not sure how many ordinary Norwegians Mr. Epstein would know), it is interesting that Boris Nikolic (whoever he is) called her by the name her family and friends use for her (whereas for public life, she uses "Mette-Marit") and that he believed "Mette" was unhappy with her life in Oslo (as of 2011-2012).

When things like this happen, I'm reminded of why it's not a good idea to go overboard with admiration for public figures such as politicians, royals and celebrities. Because you inevitably find out they are deeply flawed people with terrible judgement.
