Crown Princess Mette-Marit diagnosed with chronic lung disease: October 2018

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
There is no such talk yet, as her illness is slow progressing thankfully..

Unfortunately it will only prolong her life, and not cure her from her illness wich she has chronically (=for the rest of her life) in her body..

Thank you all for your responses.

A lung transplant has its own sets of challenges -but once recovered it will in essence cure her of the disease and the illness and she can go on to lead a normal life. Perhaps the discussion has taken place behind the scenes and we just don't know it. Perhaps she is on a lung transplant list already!

Could a lung transplant really cure her? I had no idea. There would of course be other problems but who wouldn't wish for her to live longer.

Princess Mette-Marit was diagnosed several years ago with pulmonary fibrosis. The recommendation for transplant is early after diagnosis. There is a lot we don't know about her disease including what the cause might be. Often time it is unknown or what is called IPF or idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

My own experience as a CCRN working with hearts, as well as harvesting organs, gives me only a general idea re: Mette-Marit's situation.

We don't know if transplant has ever been offered. Lung transplant survival rates are lower than other solid organ transplants (liver, heart, or kidneys) due to the fragility of the lungs.

I am very sympathetic and wish only the very best for Princess Mette-Marit.

American Lung Assoc:

Postponing MM activities for a week is not long. It seems like we may expect updates. I want to be an optimist and see our lovely Mette-Marit back soon.

Considering the diagnosis is given a 3-5 year prognosis, and she was diagnosed in 2018, sadly its not unexpected her symptoms have become worse. Hopefully this treatment goes well, and the stress with what is going on with her son will not hinder it, and she will be able to continue on.

HRH The Crown Princess still on sick leave
Due to side effects of the medicines the Crown Princess must take for her chronic lung disease, the sick leave has been extended, initially until 5 November.

Program entries in the period will be canceled or postponed

Wishing the Crown Princess the very best!

Mette-Marit was originally supposed to attend today an event at the Vega cinema in Oslo. Now the Palace reports that the Crown Princess is cancelling.
The palace refers to an earlier press release about the crown princess's lung disease.

Has Mette-Marit ever been seen publicly using oxygen? It’s remarkable if she hasn’t, given the fairly long time she has had this disease. She has already outlived the average life expectancy for people with pulmonary fibrosis.

Not to my knowledge. But there is likely a lot of things going on behind the scenes that we know nothing about…

It’s difficult to estimate how long life expectancy she has as the illness can progress fast in some people and slowly in others so the treatment options also varies…

We know from earlier statements that her illness was diagnosed ”early” in the process and that her doctor has said it is slowly progressing… So noone really knows what lies ahead for her… Probably not even her doctor

No, of course not. And, no one is a statistic. The American Lung Association says 3-5 years is if the average survival from diagnosis. It's such a dire prognosis, I wonder what impact it has had on her family, including Marius.

It has had an astounding impact on all members of Mette Marit’s family I would imagine, especially her husband and children. She is of course getting the very best of care. As far as Marius is concerned however, when he looks back on this period when he’s older I wonder whether he will reflect on whether he eased his mother’s troubles or increased them. And I think we all know the answer.

I wonder if she was misdiagnosed. Assuming she was diagnosed in 2018 when it was publicly announced she has already lived beyond the average life expectancy of people with the disease. Moreover her health does not seem to be declining-(ie requiring oxygen)-in public and in private photos she seems to be just fine. In fact she seems to be thriving- participating in events and activities (ie skiing) that people with her disease would not normally have the lung capacity to do.

Let's refresh everyone's memories before we all get too far a field re: ML's lung disease.

24/10/2018
Over time, the Crown Princess has undergone extensive investigations related to her health and an unusual variant of fibrosis in the lungs has been detected, according to the Crown Princess' doctor, Professor Kristian Bjøro at the National Hospital. It has not yet been clarified whether the lung disease is part of a more extensive autoimmune disease process, or whether there are other causes underlying the lung changes.

Professor Bjøro states that the lung changes have already been followed for several years, and that the development of the disease during this period has been slow. Investigation and treatment takes place at Rikshospitalet in Oslo, and in collaboration with doctors abroad.
- The Crown Princess will have to undergo further investigation in the future and also treatment trials. In situations like that of the Crown Princess, it is common for us to collaborate with environments abroad, says Bjøro.
He goes on to say that the cause of the type of fibrosis the Crown Princess has been diagnosed with is little known, but there is broad agreement that it is not related to environmental or lifestyle factors as is the case with other more common types of pulmonary fibrosis.
The fact that the disease is detected at an early stage is favorable in terms of prognosis.

It's scary to imagine what impact both personal and professional stress have on her. I'm sure the current situation where she can't see Marius must be especially stressful. Or, maybe, knowing that he is tucked away someplace where he can't get into deeper trouble is a relief.

Yes, that's what I was getting at. I hope for her sake that is the case. Her case must be atypical, which is good news, I imagine.

In 2018 it was categorized as an unusual variant of fibrosis (scarring) not ruling out an autoimmune disease process. Environmental and lifestyle were ruled out. I think we can be assured she is receiving the best quality care.

Update on the Crown Princess's health condition
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s chronic illness pulmonary fibrosis has progressed. The Crown Princess experiences daily symptoms and discomfort that affect her ability to perform her duties.

She requires more rest, and her daily condition changes more rapidly than before. This means that changes to her official schedule may occur more frequently and with shorter notice than we are used to.

The Crown Princess has a strong desire to continue working, and therefore we will organize her official program going forward in the best possible way to accommodate her health condition and duties.

Asked by the press today during an other engagement in Oslo she said her lungs where not cooperating and that she needed to rest and therefor would not make it to the concert in Nidarosdomen as planned this evening, but planned to attend in Trondheim tomorrow

Really sorry to hear. A few months ago, there was a statement about her health as well, so it seems it is indeed progressing in a negative way. Hope she'll find ways to balance all she holds dear.

King Harald says to TV2 it affects the crown prince, even if they knew this was going to happen.
Haakon avoided questions from the press about his wifes health today

I hope that Princess Mette-Marit will be able to appear at some events when she feels well. I am very sorry that her illness is progressing.:(

I am so sorry to read that, she is one of my favourite princesses.

This is obviously terrible for the Crown Princess and family - something they no doubt have been expecting and trying to prepare for. I think we can expect to see less and less of her as time progresses understandably her priority should he spending time with her family.

I do wonder if we will see Ingrid step up in time and help her Dad with engagements or tours

We have been told that she has an unusual variant of pulmonary fibrosis possibly related to an autoimmune disorder. The fact that the CP needs to reduce her workload isn't mysterious or surprising. (..)

The roster of active NRF members is looking quite slim - with the news of Mette Marit further scaling back her public duties, King Harald’s frequent health scares (could also include Queen Sonja too), Sverre Magnus being a bit MIA, and Martha Louise not performing royal engagements, I hope Haakon and Ingrid Alexandra are prepared to carry the extra load of responsibilities.

What does "MIA" mean?
