On July 23rd, Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko began a 2-day visit to Hiroshima Prefecture for the 2025 Inter-High School Championships opening ceremony and local inspection.
They offered flowers and paid respects at the Cenotaph for A-bomb Victims at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and will meet high school students engaged in peace activities at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
Jiji reports the couple were scheduled to visit Funairi Mutsumi-en, a nursing home for A-bomb survivors, but several residents are infected with Covid-19 and the facility requested cancelation.

On June 26th, Crown Prince Akishino visited Hiroshima University’s Higashi-Hiroshima Campus in Hiroshima Prefecture.

- presentation from Associate Professor Junmei Nakamura of the Graduate School of Integrated Life Sciences on his research on the development of technology to preserve chickens at the cellular level and its use in preserving a rare breed of chicken unique to Japan
- visit to Semiconductor Industrial Technology Research Institute, where Director Akinobu Teramoto explained the history of the semiconductor industry, the institute’s establishment and multifaceted efforts of industry, government, and academia both in Japan and overseas, such as the Setouchi Semiconductor Consortium
- tour of the super clean room and other facilities
- Amphibian Research Center where Director Hajime Ogino introduced research on human genetic diseases and organ regeneration using amphibians as models, as well as conservation research on endangered species such as the giant salamander, and explained the National Bioresource Project
