On November 25th, Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko attended a press conference ahead of their December 3-8 official visit to Türkiye at Akasaka East residence.

The prince hopes to "contribute to advancing friendly relations and deepening mutual understanding" and described his impression of Türkiye as "a crossroads of civilizations from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia ... It plays an important role in the current Middle Eastern situation."

Crown Princess Kiko shared her aspirations, "I would like to keep in my heart the thoughts of those who have worked hard to promote exchanges between our two countries."

The couple were asked about their expectations for Prince Hisahito, who will play a key role in promoting international friendship in the future. They are encouraging him to study abroad and that "it would be good for him to have the opportunity to see Japan from far away, think about it, and learn from it." Prince Hisahito himself also feels the need to study abroad, according to the couple.

Japanese transcript: 秋篠宮皇嗣殿下お誕生日に際し(令和6年) - 宮内庁

Summary
  • Recap of past year and world events: Noto earthquake, Russia's war on Ukraine continues, Middle East conflict, climate change and natural disasters, flooding in Spain, excessive heat, Japanese A-bomb survivors organization Nihon Hidankyo winning the Nobel Peace Prize, Olympic and Paralympic Games, coexistence of humans and wildlife.
  • Feels the loss of Princess Yuriko, who died on November 15 at age 101. She visited him on his birthday last year and they met this January.
  • He doesn't think Crown Princess Kiko's health is completely back to normal but much progress has been made and she is able to carry out regular activities.
  • Was surprised at Empress Emerita Michiko's fall and wished her a speedy recovery. She was using a wheelchair when he visited for her birthday greetings on October 20. Since she's walking with cane now, he feels she's recovering quickly and happy about it.
  • He happened to meet his father, Emperor Emeritus Akihito, twice in the last month an a half during his walks. They chatted briefly.
  • He's still not used to the revised Civil Code, lowering the age of majority to 18. Hisahito and everyone around him feel the same way. Strange to be considered an adult in high school, instead of university. He believes Prince Hisahito will feel more of an adult when the coming-of-age ceremonies happen.
  • When asked about memories/impressions of Prince Hisahito's childhood, Prince Akishino recalls an incident in 6th grade where he picked Hisahito up from school as practice for an emergency. Unfortunately, he has very poor spatial awareness and led them in the wrong direction. Hisahito led them home.
  • Other notable memories are trips to Bhutan, Okinawa and Nagasaki.
  • He gave Hisahito the same message given to Mako and Kako when they came of age: they will be requested as adults from various places/organizations. Take every request seriously and perform carefully.
  • Thinks it's great that the Imperial Household Agency joined Instagram and sharing the activities of the Emperor and Empress is going well. However, he worries about a single account for both IHA and Imperial family. There may be confusion.
  • Regarding introducing Akishino and other Imperial branches on the IHA instagram, he says it's important to setup a proper framework for public relations. Uniformity and consistency in dissemination of information. Thinks it'll take several years for proper conditions.
  • Regarding online criticism: anyone can post online, difficulty responding and how, nearly bullying behavior
  • Refrains from commenting on Imperial system and proposal to let princesses retain Imperial status after marriage, except to say those who would be impacted should be heard.
  • Review of activities, such as attending solo rather than as a couple.
  • Princess Kako's activities are expanding and she working hard. She lives close by and they meet from time to time, she is doing well. There is no discussion of marriage.
