Crown Prince Christian's Military Studies & Term of Service: 2025 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Maybe that’s partly why he cut it in Africa — knowing it was all coming off again in a few months and didn’t matter very much.

During the first week of basic training, Crown Prince Christian and his new fellow soldiers will be put to the test.
They have to pass a basic physical test, muscle test and a running test.

Will the Royal Household release photos of Crown Prince Christian ba military training?

Video of Crown Prince Christian arriving for his first day of military training.

I am sure there will be updates. However, I truly hope Christian is allowed to be allowed to do his training like a normal conscript along with the others, even with being the heir. There is no reason to follow him around with a camera and post constant photos and videos of everything. That, ultimately just makes his military service look more performative than anything and for PR.

I too find it likely that there will be a press day at some point. Probably towards the end of bootcamp, when the recruits know left from right, have become more lean and have learned to dress, so they look smart and act like soldiers.
After all Christian is a godsend for the regiment as a living recruiter.
Any recruit in reasonable shape should be able to complete the physical demands. Even though it's a combat regiment, the purpose is after all to have as many who are suitable to complete bootcamp as possible.

The purpose of conscription in DK is partly to maintain an affiliation with the military and the general population, but also as a recruitment drive. You get the conscripts to have a sniff at military life, in the hope that those who like it will sign up as a professional or sign up for future deployment abroad. While at the same time weeding out the rambos, who think the military is like a movie and who are thus not suited.
In my time we went through bootcamp and then we stayed on getting a function, in my case in an NBC recce unit. And depending on the unit the conscription could last a year or nine months. At the end of that period we were trained well enough to go to war. Not as an elite, but well enough. At the end of our conscription we were send home to be a part of the mobilization force and called up a couple of times for a few weeks of training.
Denmark will be returning to that system over the next couple of years as we expand our military with more regiments, call up more conscripts and weapons and material is delivered.

We are not quite there yet, so Christian and his comrades will still only be required to go through bootcamp. Those who volunteer for the Horse Squadron, will stay for some eight months more, where they learn to ride in formation and take part in parades and such. - Actually it will very much be up to the horses to teach the recruits.
Because most hussars horses will be seasoned cavalry mounts who know perfectly well their position in the formation and who know how to ride in formation. The horses also know the signals from the trumpets (hussars use trumpets, not horns or bugles) and obey the command instantly, which is more than their silly riders do...
I can well imagine the horses gossiping about their riders in the stable and complaining about the conscripts getting more and more stupid and hopeless.

According to Billed-Bladet, Crown Prince Christian will take a first aid course during his four-month basic military training. Christian and his colleagues will undergo this training, which includes a series of practical first aid exercises. He will learn how to treat and save injured people.

The Royal Family visited the barracks where Crown Prince Christian is staying.

The military get up suits Christian!

This picture in particular is very intriguing 👀 Mandatory female conscription will take effect from 1 January 2027. Isabella graduates in the summer of 2026. As I understand it, there are usually enough volunteers that you don't have to serve if you don't want to and Isabella should obviously follow her heart but she would not only be the first female member of the DRF to conscript, I reckon she would also serve as a great role model for women with the new equality in conscription.

Looks like it was some kind of family day where all of them had family over. Lovely initiative. I am sure it means a lot for both the soldiers in training and their families.

It was indeed visiting day for relatives at Slagelse Barracks.

What lovely pictures and lovely day for all. They looks just like any other family in the mix.
Love the pictures of Christian with this sibling, showing Vincent his notes and letting Isabella try on his helmet.

And regarding the name on his uniform.
"- "Trekroner" must be his name at Slagelse Barracks. In the Guard Hussar Regiment, you have a name based on where you come from, and Crown Prince Christian is called "Trekroner", says Ulrik Ulriksen.
The closest Trekroner to Crown Prince Christian's childhood home is the artificial island Trekroner in Copenhagen Harbor."

That's exactly what it is.
After about a month, when the recruits begin to look and act like soldiers, their families are invited to have a look and admire the result.

(..)
And Christian's recruit-name is Trekroner. That's a fort out in the water in Copenhagen harbor, so I doubt the hussars will need Christian to lead them there.
(In the guards hussars, the hussars are known by the town, city, village, parish they come from.
(I see Polyesco and Billed Bladet beat me to it.)

Yes, these photos are absolutely lovely. CP Christian’s growth spurt is pretty obvious beside his younger siblings. I loved the photo of Josephine trying on her brother’s helmet! I hope that Christian is enjoying his army training so far. He looks quite happy and content.

It's Isabella trying on the helmet. Very cute moment.

More from family day at the barracks.

Christian has completed his final exercise and he is now officially a Guards Hussar. This Rex-exercise culminates in those completing getting their regimental badges.
And Christian has been approved for the lieutenants training. That will start in August and last a year. Then he will spend some time at the Guards Hussars as platoon leader. - That is the exact same path as King Frederik.

The DRF has published a number of pics from the Rex-exercise:
There is also a video.

During the Rex-exercise Christian acted as the second in command of his platoon.
The exercise last four days and is divided into two parts of 48 hours.
The first part is a a combined guard and alert part, where they guard something and then are suddenly alerted and told to move out in a hurry.
The next 48 hours takes place in the field and consists of a number of challenges based on what they have learned as recruits. The conscripts carry 25-35 kilos of equipment and march 50 km over a period of 36 hours. Christian as second in command had to march 65 km, because he needs to do some recce ahead of deploying the rest of the platoon.
There are typically one or two breaks a day of about two hours, where they can (perhaps) get some sleep. (Some will pull guard duty.)
They will get one ration containing 3.700 calories, which is to last for these four days. This is considered a daily ration, but they won't get anymore to eat.

Christian is interviewed twice during the exercise. At first he looks pretty fresh and ready to go. He clearly enjoys the camaraderie in the army.
After three days he still looks in high spirit.
At the end it was a proud Christian who had earned his badge and who is looking very much forward to becoming a lieutenant, which is also in the town of Slagelse where his regiment is located.

- I'm sure the video will soon be found on YouTube with English subtitles.

ADDED: Being the second in command of any unit in the military is widely considered the hardest job, because he has to familiarize himself with the plans, while ensuring that orders are carried out as the commander wants them to be carried and in the spirit of the commander. He also has to look after the platoon, making sure it is ready and well prepared at all times. Making sure that sentries are alert and relieved, while having to be ready to take over at a moments notice. The commander lay the plans, present them and give orders, the second in command has to make sure the plans and orders are followed and that the unit is able to carry them out. - There would have been very little sleep for Christian!

Thanks @Muhler

Here is a much longer video (about 6 minutes) posted on the DRF YouTube channel re Crown Prince Christian's military training. Very well done video. Just wish the DRF added English subtitles to their videos since they are getting more ttention outside of Denmark now. I mean a handsome younger royal couple and 4 attractive and personable royal teenagers will do that. Anyway here is the video.

Lovely video indeed. Christian again comes across as level-headed and hard-working. Any thoughts on how he will spend his 3 months of? Just a long summer break? Or is anything else scheduled?

The Crown Prince has had a busy year so far with his military training and Regent duties .
He must be looking forward to his summer holidays.

Christian can be proud! What a joy to see the video and photos. In some of the pics where is is smiling he looks a lot like Frederik.

I'm glad they were able to record him with minimum interruption. He was allowed time to grow. Great to hear about the future plans that start in early August and will take a year.

So far we will see him in June 9 for the royal run, where he will once again be on his own and be "host" at Viborg.

Yes - I saw some of the comments on the Instagram post where people referenced how much he looks like his father in some of the photos. I think he is enjoying his military training. I also agree that it was great the he was able to do his training and form bonds with his fellow conscripts without the constant presence of reporters or royal house photographers. Sometimes too much exposure in situations like this make the activities just look performative in nature. I think the DRF showed a good balance of allowing him the privacy to do his training and giving the public updates as he is the Crown Prince and people want to know about what he's doing. So, we got photos of his arrival at training, during the scheduled family day and now at the completion of his training to sum up his time and provide information as to his next steps. Perfect balance imo.

Very much agree. Some of this he mentions in the video
"- We are a lot of young people from very different parts of the country, who have all gotten along really well with each other.
- Almost from the first week on, I think there was great enthusiasm for getting to know new people. I am very happy with the camaraderie here. You can see that it binds you closer together when you are part of what we do, the Crown Prince says in this connection."

Regarding his salary
"The training to become a lieutenant lasts one year, followed by a period of practical service as a platoon leader.
As a lieutenant in the Danish Armed Forces, you have the opportunity to work as a leader, instructor, teacher, firing leader and educator for the soldiers. The basic salary for the training is around 26,000 kroner.
The Royal House confirms to Ritzau that the Crown Prince will not receive a salary during the education - just as has been the case during the Crown Prince's military service."

I don't understand much of other countries military academies but if I'm not wrong, Christian is doing a 2 year period in the Danish army?

I'm not a military person but I really believe that royals, future heads of state, benefit from having a military background. They learn to follow orders and rules, and the loyalty and camaraderie often lacking in their privileged backgrounds,

Good on Christian for being fully engaged and enjoying his time in the army.

Thanks @Muhler

Thanks for posting this, very interesting. And every time I listen to Danish I have to say, kudos to Mary for learning to speak this language as an adult. It sounds un-learnable to my ears, same feeling I have with Portuguese.

Agree re Mary - I include Alexandra and Marie as well - they also had to learn it as an adult.

The reserve-officer's training lasts two years. That's because they have to go trough bootcamp first, then NCO training and also practical training as lieutenants. That takes place at the school.
For regular officers, as Christian will be, the training to graduate as lieutenant takes two years. Christian has already completed bootcamp, so he will go straight to NCO training, where he will learn the basics of command and leadership. Then he will train to become an officer. Once he has graduated as lieutenant then he will return to his regiment for practical training where he will learn to use what he has been taught.
The difference being that while officers of the reserves are part-time officers who will return to train and further courses, Christian will be a regular officer, working as an officer with his regiment, full time.
So overall Christian will also spend around the same time to become a regular officer but it's much more practical.

If Christian follow the same path as King Frederik, he will lead a platoon including the administrative aspects. Say a recce platoon or some similar detachment, where he will learn all the practical things, handle problems on his own and make lots of mistakes, that's what young lieutenants do. When he has gained more experience he may become the second-in-command of a company. And after a while he will be promoted to captain and head a company.

But to become a major he will have to attend the officers academy for the first part of the staff-officers training. (Queen Mary BTW has gone through this, albeit part time, as a major in the Home Guard.) And some time into the future when Christian is a full colonel, he will attend the second part of the staff-officers training, enabling him to become a general.
Inbetween all that he will undoubtedly attend various courses, earn skill badges and earn his jump-wings.
I find it likely that Christian will be promoted to captain after two or three years. Then leave the military for university.
After university he is likely to return to the military for additional service, getting additional and deeper insight to commanding units. But it will probably be in a more lose attachment, because he wouldn't be a career officer.
He may, do like his father, and return to the military full time, like joining a special forces unit (if he can) or be deployed abroad, or go to pilot-school or the navy. There are many options, but that is unlikely to happen until he is around 30.
Anyway, Christian is fully expected as a matter of course, that he will spend quite some time in the military.

- And whatever you think about the military it does teach you a number of valuable skills and gives you a solid leadership education. It instills some useful habits in you that you will find difficult to put aside later in life, like keeping your things in order, self-discipline and learn how to grit your teeth and deal with adversity.
It also teaches you to be around very different people, relate to them and work with, also if you don't like them. And it teaches you to be humble, that you are not always the center of the universe.
But first and foremost, like Leonor of Spain has found out, Christian will win personal victories and earn the respect in his own right from those around, also when he fails in what he is doing, he will win and gain respect by trying his best. - These are victories I will claim are absolutely crucial for any young people, for anyone actually. It's a pity no all experience such wins or is allowed to win such personal victories.
Like they love to point out in the military: You can do twice as much as you yourself think you can. And ten times as much as your mother think you can.
