Crown Prince Christian, News and Current Events Part 1: January 2024 -

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
When did Frederik start attending? Given that Christian is regent whenever his father is abroad, it would make sense for him to attend imho.

It looks like Christian had a great time in Africa, which is of course a part of a formative journey.
It helps him grow, mature and become independent because even though he can reach mommy by phone, she can't come to wipe away his tears - and that's healthy, for both parents and child.
Not that I'm under the impression that Christian needs much pampering.
Anyway I dare say most DK high school graduates embark of some sort of formative journey after graduating and/or get a regular job.
And of course that's how it has been with royal males as well for many centuries.

By joining the Guards Hussars Christian will follow in the footsteps of his father.
But we shouldn't expect to see him riding in the Horse-Squadron (*) at some state visit or similar.
It's more likely that Christian after boot camp, will go to the NCO school and then the officers academy graduating a first lieutenant, before commanding a platoon in the Guards Hussars.
And as such we will be likely to see Christian in the hussar gala uniform, at galas, riding behind the royal carriage at big events and similar events where a uniform is required. And for so long Christian is in service, which basically means to the end of his reign, he can wear the hussar uniform, just as King Frederik even though he usually prefer the navy uniform.

ADDED: I find it very likely that Christian will attend the New Year Courts where the CP is expected to attend. After all, apart from nursing a possible hangover, he hasn't got anything else to do. And he might just as well learn the ropes as soon as possible,

Thanks Muhler. Is the Guards Hussar's uniform the one that looks like a skeleton?

The post by Christian is great! Shows he participated in varied activities and has learned alot. This is very good for him, especially having to rely on himself. Glad he had the experience.

Indeed it is.

The straps on the uniform, which are a Hungarian style, doubled at resembling ribs.

And a number of hussar regiments had a skull as their badge, that was placed in their headgear. Unfortunately for a number of otherwise honorable regiments the skull was also adopted by the SS.
There are BTW no buttons in a hussar uniform, it's all held together by straps. Buttons are after all a relatively new invention (for popular use) and the hussar-style predated buttons.
The straps on the head of the horses are made of sea-shells and apart from looking decorative they doubled as some protection against sabre-slashed. Hussar regiments are armed with relatively light and more curved sabres than heavy cavalry regiments, who often used their sabres to thrust, rather than slash. But hussars mainly used their sabres to slash, because in a melee their fought more individually and with a lot more movement than heavier cavalry regiments.
And that's why the hussars wear their fur(-jacket) over their left shoulder. It provided an excellent protection against slashes from sabers.

Hussars relied on their agility when fighting other cavalry types. Either in simply running away or by moving a lot and thus escaping being cut down. Hussars had a multitude of functions: Mainly escort, patrol, recce, raiding, perimeter security and harassing fleeing enemy infantry. Hussars tended to avoid direct clashes with enemy cavalry, especially in formation. Because when facing say heavy dragoons not to mention cuirassiers, they would simply be ridden down! But the type of cavalry hussars and basically all cavalry units feared the most were lancers. Light lancers could ride just as fast as hussars and simply pick them off by their lances.

- Hmm, I see, I'm getting carried away, so better stop here, before I bore you to death.

Not boring at all! Always appreciate your knowledge and historical references! IMO it enhances the discussion and gives depth and insight into Danish history, traditions, including how it applies to the monarchy and DRF!

So it seems Christian is possibly following in his father's footsteps as he begins military training. Did Joachim do the Guard Hussars as well?

I also think that Christian will attend the New Years court upcoming. He is now the heir and attending is all a part of learning the role. Plus, he is 19 now and waiting until he's in his 30s to start learning or growing confident in his role is just not a good idea or path.

Thank you.
Joachim joined IIRC Dronningens livregiment (can be translated to The Queen Own Regiment of Foot) before it was amalgamated into Prinsens Livregiment (The Prince's Own Regiment of Foot) both regiments being affiliated with a specific member of the DRF, i.e. Queen Ingrid and PH. As such Joachim at some point did sentry duty outside Gråsten, at a time when Queen Ingrid was present. His regiment, being affiliated with Queen Ingrid, provided sentries when she was at Gråsten.

A final thing: Christian is not build like a hussar!
Christian is a big dude! The ideal hussar were small men, about the height of a not too tall modern woman.
200 years ago and in a cavalry context, Christian would be an ideal heavy dragoon or even better, a cuirassier.
On film hussars are invariably depicted as tall, dashing men. When in reality they were rarely above average height for men at their time, say 1.60 to 1.65 would be quite a normal height for a hussar.

Muhler-Do you expect that at some point in time we'll see CP Christian attending a military academy after he's completed his basic training?

Absolutely.
Boot camp - NCO school - officers academy - first lieutenant, in about three years or so from now.
It's a first class leadership education, that also instills a sense of duty, discipline and teach him to push his own boundaries. He would in fact be likely to be deployed to Latvia for a period when he has graduated as lieutenant. Will teach him to take the whole thing more serious than if he was merely running around in a forest somewhere in DK.

ADDED: A bit like Ingrid in Norway, who will soon spend some time near the border to Russia.

Expect that Christian will be in the military on and off for many years… It’s the road nearly all the heirs go unless they have health limitations that prohibits them…

Nowdays both the male and female heirs

Depending on the country. In the Netherlands there is no such expectation for female heirs (most likely because they've had their fair share of reigning queens). And the extent of the training also varies largely for the countries that do have expectations of military training for all heirs.

Will a statement be released about Prince Christian's military training?

The Home Page of the Garderhussar says you can be maximum 190cm and 100 kg. I find it hard to think he is not taller than 190 cm.

Yeah, his dad is 182 cm or so and Christian is noticeable taller - and bigger! Christian is not a skinny guy, so a 100 kg wouldn't be far off IMO.
IIRC the hussar horses are either geldings or mares = more docile. But at the prospect of having a 100 kg guy sitting on their backs, they might protest a little bit!

A pity Christian can't join say the Black Watch, he has the height, stature - and knees - to look imposing in a kilt and it would be a nod to his Sottish heritage.

I would say that Christian is close to 6 feet 3 inches or 190cm which is my son's height. My husband is 5 feet 10 1/2 inches.
I agree that Christian would look splendid in a Black Watch kilt!

Some nice words about Christian from the US ambassador to Denmark "- I met the Crown Prince on one of my high school visits, and he was so warm and friendly, and we had a wonderful discussion, so I think Denmark should be very proud to have such a fantastic person as Crown Prince, said Alan Leventhal when he arrived at the New Year's cure."

The Crown Prince is regent today and tomorrow, January 11th.
We can see his flag over Amalienborg today

The King and Queen are on a private trip abroad these two days

Will Crown Prince Christian go through the Land Army, the Navy and the Air Army? That is, the 3 armies.

His father trained in all three parts of the military - although it seems his most extensive/specialist training was in the Navy as Frogman. It seems likely that Christian will follow suit and will include training in all three parts of the military: Army, Navy, and Air Force.

It explain why Frederik often wear the Navy gala uniform
What military uniform Christian should wear? Navy, Air Force or Army?

King Frederik is pretty unique in the sense that he did serve in all three branches of the military.
His grandfather Frederik IX was also special because he was the first king in recent centuries who was trained and served in the navy.
Christian X on the other hand served in the army and he was a ramrod straight army-man until he died.

There is no requirement as such for Christian to serve in all three branches of the military. It is however very much expected that he will get a formal military and officers training. He may also likely do a stint in the navy and air force, just to try it and get an affiliation with these branches. Or he may not. Not everybody are cut out for the military and he may opt for the minimum service required.

But if we are talking about uniforms. Christian is to serve in Guards Hussars, a light regiment. And that means that say at the next New Year Court he should be entitled to wear the gala uniform of the Guards Hussars. I look forward to seeing QMII's face when she is looking at him.
What will happen is that Christian will serve three or four months of boot camp with the hussars. He may opt for service with the Horse Squadron, but I doubt that. More likely he will go straight NCO school and upon completing that and doing some service with his regiment, it's off to the officers academy.
This is not to be confused with the training Nikolai and Felix attempted, which is aimed at producing officers of the reserve.
But back to Christian, while at the officers academy Christian will still belong to his regiment, but upon graduating a first lieutenant, he may serve in another regiment.
- Due to invasion of Ukraine, a number of regiments are being reformed. But that is question of building barracks, getting weapons and equipment and providing qualified instructors before you can call up conscripts and that takes time.

Thanks Muhler. Wishing Christian the best and it'll be exciting to see his own growth and development and how that influences his next choices. Not everything should be preplanned to the T.
