Well, that's monarchy for you... Compared to the amounts of ex-presidents or their respective widows the Federal republic of Germany has acquired nad has to pay for the upkeep - this is nothing!

That is not the point, you more or less gave the impression that Queen Margrethe, in all her grace and favour, made a wise decision, etc.

Queen Margrethe in fact has nothing to do with all this. It was an arrangement by the State of Denmark.

Posters are here and there sticking feathers in Queen Margrethe's royal bum, while they should stick it in the bum of the Danish taxpayer.

For some reason, I am a bit sad. That means we will see less Alex in the future. I wish both of them the very best in the new life.

I am still your fan countess Alex!!

Hi - I haven't visited the Royal Forums in ages and saw this thread just now - I had no idea Alexandra was getting married again! I know none of the details/info. Apparently the groom is younger than Alexandra - how many years younger is he? What does he do?

Sorry, I'm sure this is all old news for you all, but could someone please update me with all this info? Thanks! :)

Princess or not, Alexandra is a wonderful role model and shining example of how to be dignified in the public eye and divorcing with grace.
I will miss seeing her and I wish her and her husband much happiness.

Does anybody know where they are gone on honeymoon ?
I really hope that, due to her popularity, we will still get plenty of pix of her and her husband. I think they are very good looking, both of them

same applies in US, billions and billions for our senators and congressmen also FOR A LIFETIME. don't get me started:bang:
i have no idea about denmark money etc. and yea to me $300,000+ a year is alot but it would only buy a middle-class home where i live. so its seems a reasonable amount but it should come out of her exhusbands pocket imo. i wouldn't think it would keep her in anyway the lifestyle she just left.

thanks for all the work on links and photos. i didn't like the white eyeshadow, horrible effect outside, aged her. flowers were beautiful, hair beehive updo:ohmy:
my mother would have "pitched a fit" (southern slang thang) if i'd tried to wear a long dress and veil at my second wedding, and my husband hadn't been married before so that point is valid. it's a new world and it's her wedding so i'll just go with she looked lovely if not cold. and martin did need a shave (didn't that stubble thing go out in the 80's?) i really wish them the best of happiness.

The difference with US Congressmen is that these are elected persons who represent their constituency in an Office of State.

Alexandra is nothing. She does not fulfill any office. She is just a former wife to a guy who happens to be the brother of the future head of state. In 45 years time, if Alexandra is still alive, then the Danish taxpayer will still pay for the Mrs Jorgensen who happens to be the mum of 52 years old Prince Nikolai and 48 years old Prince Felix, nephews to King Frederik XII or cousins to King Christian XI.

And if a former in-law like the mother of Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix receives an allowance, how can the Danish taxpayer then refuse to pay an allowance to born Princes as Nikolai and Felix? Where is the end?

Really, I'm a monarchist, but this Danish arrangement is too ridiculous for words. I wish Alexandra all the best. I wish her a fantastic alimentation, a beautiful house, etc. But it is Prince Joachim who should pay for it! He has the lusts of marriage. Let him bear the lasts of the divorce! And not the Danish taxpayer.

Anyway, I'm no Dane. Apparently the folks in there do agree, according polls the 47% is against and 53% is pro, which shows how divided the Danes think about this arrangement.

To go back to US-presidents. Would the Americans pay an annual allowance to a former spouse of Chelsea Clinton?

Just let the Danes do whatever they like.
Maybe it´s hard for you to understand as a Dutch, but don´t forget that each country is just different and each functions in its own way.

Denmark is a very well-functioning and developed country, that has one of the best health, school and social systems in Europe, maybe even in the World, namely because the taxes are so high. There might be more to do in other countries, with the taxes, than there is in Denmark, that's why Denmark can afford paying its royal house, and a person who has been a great ambassador for Denmark through the last 12 years, on such a high level(payement) ?

The Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg do 'enjoy' gigantic taxes as well for their extended welfare state system. These states are very comparable. It is not about 'can we afford it?'. The Netherlands have almost 4x the number of inhabitants of Denmark. Phew.... we can afford 50 Alexandra's if we need to... It is about the principle: why does the taxpayer need to pay for an ex-spouse of a guy who happens to be the brother of the future head of state?

And Alexandra was no ambassador for Denmark.
Denmark has an excellent working Corps Diplomatique with professionals, in embassies and consulates all over the world. They are the ambassadors of Denmark. Alexandra was just that lady the second son of the head of state felt in love with. That is all.

I didn't mean that the Netherlands wouldn't be able to afford it, I know they would be very able to afford it, but maybe Denmark's priorities are in another place than Holland's, why else would Denmark pay for Alexandra, and the Netherlands not pay for, say, Laurentien? To me, it sort of looks like Denmark don't have anything else to do with the money, why would they else pay her like that?(I'm not saying that to offend any danes). Henri M., I agree with all your statements, but what I meant was that they wouldn't support Alexandra, if the state of Denmark really needed the money to one thing or another. Obvioustly. € 300.000 is an awfully lot of money to give away if the Denmark was in need of something, so maybe everything is in place, and wups, there they have 300.000 euro's, they'll give them to Alex. Shall we stop here ? :flowers:

I think it might have to do with the fact that Denmark has a weak spot regarding this princess, er, countess.

After all, then years ago when Joachim brought her home, she was the first princess in a new generation, and it took years for the MArys, Letizias and Masima's of the world to materialize. For a great good while, Alexandra was, well, it. So perhaps they feel a huge loyalty towards this woman.

And Henri M., of course, she, too, was an ambassador for Denmark. All functional royals are de facto ambassadors for their constituents. That's part of their role.

Alexandra's government allowance has been discussed ad nauseam and we can discuss it until the cows come home and it won't make one bit of difference. I read the same comments and remarks that I've read in previous threads. It's time to move on. This is after all a current events thread.

Unless there is a change in Alexandra's allowance, this conversation is closed. All posts related to this issue will be deleted without notice.

Happy posting!

It´s very unfair that you said Alexandra is no ambassador of Denmark.

She has travelled to a lot of different countries to visit people who need help. (Like tsunami victims, etc.)
These people would not only remember that a Princess has visited them and listened to them, but also a princess from "Denmark" has visited them.
When Alexandra gave speeches for UNICEF in New York, people also remember that a princess from "Denmark" has given a speech to them.

I agree with what Princess Olga said.

Princess Alexandra and Martin

 Thanks to Princess Diana and the Duchess of York ( Sarah Furgerson) many commmoners who have joined by marriage the Royals have learned to be discreet. The world is a stage and we are the actors. "To thine ownself be true"

Okay, I guess.:ermm:

Nonetheless, I would like to argue that commoners who have married into royalty, prior to two you have mentioned, tended to be quite discreet.

I think Henri meant that Alexandra was not officially an ambassador for Denmark. Denmark has a professional corps of diplomats that pay respects to the Queen.

Alexandra, when she was royal, performed the functions of Danish royalty. There is a difference between the functions of royalty and the functions of a state's ambassors.

Now she is no longer royal and she has professed desire for a private life so we shall see what the future has in store for her. I daresay based on her own wishes, her new life will be different than the life she led as a royal.

Well Queen Sonja and Queen Silvia both have been very discreet. But I think they came from an earlier age where discretion was more a characteristic of the common man as well as of royalty.

We hadn't reached the age of reality TV and Jerry Springer yet. Right now society is so poised towards showing all your secrets, I daresay that both aristocrats and commoners are far more open than either class was previously.

From what I have seen and read, Alexandra did a wonderful job representing the Danish Royal Family. It appears to me she wants to move on and start a new life.

The Danish magazine Billed-Bladet has exclusive photos of Countess Alexandra, Martin and the two boys on their honeymoon in paradise. The magazine did not say exactly where they are, but from the looks of the photos its some place warm, tropical, and beautiful.

The couple look extremely happy and relaxed while the boys seem to be enjoying the warm sun.

Read more and see the photos http://www.theroyalforums.com/forums/here.

Alexandra plays down pregnancy rumours
hello has a spread too. i find it odd the boys have to dress alike on a beach! i could understand the wedding and even official photos and events, but the beach. i suppose it was a planned photo op or something but still, the adults are dressed "beachy" why not the boys, they look dressed for school.
they all look happy and relaxed :).
Billedgalleri - Alexandras bryllupsrejse ... Billed-Bladet: Danmarks Royale Ugeblad...

I think its great they want to include the boys in as much as they can but it seems a little weird to me to invite your kids to your honeymoon.

Is he youner than her? I don't remember.
They look so happy! I wish them all the happiness in the world!:flowers:

yes, by 16 years or something like that.
Actually 14 years. Alexandra was born in 1964, and Martin was born in 1978.

However, I can´t tell the age difference from the pictures of this couple. Martin looks more mature than he actually is, and Alex looks much younger than she actually is. I wish I will have her figure when I am at her age! Did any magazine interviewed her and revealed how she keeps her figure?

BTW, I am also wondering if Alexandra naturally attracts younger men. Prince Joachim was born in 1969.

can't agree with you more about this. i find it ridiculous that some ppl on this board criticize alexandra on this matter. No mater how you call it about the money she receives annually and whoever pay for it, the truth is that it is spousal support! alexandra is perfectly entitled to it just like any other divorcees having a affluent ex. Do you think it make any difference for alexandra where the money is from? if people want to criticize, they should point their finger to danish royal family instead. they use danish people's genuine affection towards alexandra to convince the government make such a outrageous financial commitment. They should have pony up thenselves instead. then there won't be any argument left lingering...

if you people are really that upset, you should make big noise to elected officials in demark. in any democratic country, no policy is unchangable. and i'll even consider it noble if a government is willing to admit its mistake and make it right. if such thing happens, the royal family will have to pay up itself if they don't want to be taken to court by alexandra.

it's obvious the only reason that alexandra didn't demand annual spousal support is because that she got the money from the danish government instead!

I thought that Alex got a huge lump sum payment, and she's not really entitled to anything else from Joachim? Apart from the child maintenance Joachim is paying for sons, there is nothing else to demand.

And I think the post should have been "I couldn't disagree with you more", since the post it was replying to was against Alex receiving the payments.
