Conclave to Select a New Pope

I thought they'd go for one of the Italian cardinals. I'm stunned.

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about the result. Surprised, but a little disappointed as well. It's not who or what I was hoping for.

American? Was not on my Bingo card. Let's hope that he continues the teachings and POVs of Pope Francis. We do not need to go backwards at this time.

Oh I am sure some will take credit for this and make it all about them in 3....2....1.

Not who I was hoping for either.

Me neither. Trump and Vance will be on cloud nine.
My guess was an African or Asian cardinal.
I am sure those 2 will take full credit for it and make it all about themselves.

His name was tossed around as one of the front runners. See for example this list of 6: Deze zes kardinalen zijn kanshebbers bij het conclaaf

He is Peruvian-American (both in descent and nationality) and spend half his life in Peru (he was for instance bishop of Chiclayo in Northern Peru from 2015-2023) and is considered a good manager and pragmatist. I guess his position as head of the department that appoints bishops meant that many of the newer cardinals know him personally.

Is he considered a conservative or more in line of the late pope Francis?
I heard that Franziskus was a sponsor. The new pope was only a cardinal for 2 years. What a career.
He is only 69, it can become a long reign.
It seemed the people at Petersplatz were stunned too, it became really silent.

The new pope was picked by the late pope Francis as prefect for the dicastery for the bishops. So he should be not too much off Francis line.

Some information

From Chicago, but citizen of Peru. Conservative on women being ordained deacons. Seems to align with Francis on some things that are more progressive.

Trump has responded on Truth Social, saying it is a great honour for the US, and he looks forward to meeting Pope Leo.

Wonderful words from the new Pope, I am very, very emotional, and I'm not even Catholic!

Wikipedia on the previous pope Leo (XIII) - as a name often is an indication of the type of pontificate the new pope aspires to: Pope Leo XIII - Wikipedia

And on the new one (which without a doubt will be updated quite a bit (after) today): Pope Leo XIV - Wikipedia

Remarkable choice of a Pope.

However, it's absolutely appalling to see such evil criticism against this man who -unlike virtual virtue signallers- has actually dedicated his life to God, just because he commited the crime of being an American, and, of course, all Americans are psychotic Trump puppets of some sort....NOPE!

The new HOLY Father is a Peruvian citizen as well and gave part of his remarkably beautiful speech in Spanish. If some politicians go Coco over his appointment, that's NOT the Holy Father's problem.

To quote the new Pope: The Virgin Mary guides and inspires us...

Wonderful!

Pope Leo XIV looked really very emotional, and I liked his first speech very much. As a Catholic, I was very moved.
I didn't expect the name Leo, but I like it. When I think of Leo XIII, the first thing that comes to mind is inevitably his encicyclical Rerum Novarum (about social rights of the working class), which was the starting point of the Church's social dottrine.

Pope Leo XIV appears on the balcony and gives his first speech.

Reaction of the Spanish Royal House to the announcement of the new Pope, Leo XIV.
We congratulate Cardinal Prevost on his election as the new pontiff, Pope Leo XIV.

His call for peace inspires us, encourages us, and reflects the deepest desire and sentiment of the Spanish people.

He seemed very emotional, but also energetic and passionate. I did not expect him either, but I like the first impression of him.

He's a very competent and humble man. In his diocese, he requested to be called Father, not His Eminence.
The chosen name also speaks volumes; his predecessor (in name) as you mentioned, was very concerned about social issues. The new Pope has classic manners and so he will not be a man of whimsical ideas or divisive impositions.

I wasn’t surprised at all. I told my husband when conclave began “I bet it’ll be an American”.
No idea why, just a feeling.

I wish him all the very best in his new role! He certainly looked very moved and emotional at the occasion.

Glad to hear that. Although myself not being Catholic but having grown up in a large catholic family, I know how very important the Pope is for many people in the world.
I always find it a great pity that people who have just been elected, be it the Pope or politicians, are directly prejudged. Everyone should be given the chance to exercise their office first. Then you can always judge them.

I knew who he was but i did not see that coming… I thought the College of Cardinals would adhere to the unwritten rule that a Pope should not come from any of the worlds superpowers…

He is controversial regarding his handling of some clergy-abuse cases… Things that he will now rightly be intensely scrutinized for…

But he is elected now and he has today become a very important person for a lot of the earths population. So i hope and pray that he will always be as straight in the back as he was when he stood on the loggia tonight, and will always choose the path of honesty. His church can not afford anything else.

Polish national broadcaster TVP tells how Pope John Paul II was elected

People was betting on Cardinal Sarah. How the world would welcome a Black Pope
