He’s telling him his Order of Canada pin broke and fell on the tarmac, “which is proof”… but I can’t make out whatever the punchline was. Here's a video of the meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada:
The follow-up: Apparently His Majesty generously offered the PM his own Order of Canada pin (he was wearing it, Carney wasn’t)… and Carney had to politely inform him that they hold different ranks, so they’re different pins, so it wouldn’t work (so he had a very good excuse not to take the King’s…), but thank you. He’s telling him his Order of Canada pin broke and fell on the tarmac, “which is proof”… but I can’t make out whatever the punchline was.
Methinks Carney is going to have to get used to being a politician, fast.
On listening again, first he characterized it to the King as “a disaster”, then he said that it fell on the tarmac in France as proof that the French were one of the founding peoples of Canada… I think, imho.
So perhaps his political instincts are a bit cannier than I initially credited him for.
