Celebrations for the Accession of Grand Duke Guillaume V: October 3 - 5, 2025

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Thank you for the summary.

It certainly seems there has been a strong international focus throughout this day, stronger than at similar events in the larger European monarchies. And of course, the royal watcher in me has enjoyed the many callbacks to the history of the dynasty.

Yes, it seems so. Not surprising considering the size of the country and the position of it within Europe - the heart of Europe as they said, with so many institutions and one of the founding members. In Belgium it is referred to as well often, including the European anthem on state occassions. But elsewhere, monarchy or not, it is less customary.

The entire stream is online, including the breaks.
The last 10 minutes show random clips before the dinner, with some great view on jewels and guests.

It is interesting that Marie-Astrid greatly resembles her mother while Margaretha seems to be resembling her father completely. The collar of Sebastien's uniform already has the initial 'G'. AD Carl Christian is wearing his toison d'or.

Archbisshop Hollerich -who married the GD and GDss 13 years ago- was also present. As was ... 🥁... Stephane Bern. No luxembourg party is complete without him. But the question now is, was he able to bring Bettel and MT together ;).

At 10:53.33 you can see the eldest sister of Stéphanie, Css Nathalie, mrs. Hamilton, wearing the Lannoy tiara. I noticed her eldest brother Jehan too, at 10:53.48, behind Prince Guillaume. Her sister-in-law Luisa Moreno de Porras can be seen at 10:54.08, in a red dress and with a tiara I do not recognise. The man behind her could be her husband count Christian, second brother of Stéphanie and now Belgium's ambassador to Chile. Behind them another brother Count Olivier and his wife Alice from an ennobled family of Antwerp traders, wearing a diamond brooch.

Added: you can see them all arrive at 08:51.00. It seems only her sister Gaelle is not present.

-
A pity that the King of the Netherlands did not wear the order of the oak crown, as he did for the wedding of Guillaume. Though this is more a state- than a family event perhaps. Several men seem to wear the neck ribbons of the order.

I thought I spotted the de Lannoy Tiara on one of the women entering the Gala! Of course I should have realized that Stephanie's family would be out in force.😉

This is the first I am reading that Stephanie's brother Count Christian is the Belgian Ambassador to Chile.

Just catching up now -

So glad Alexandra made it to at least part of the events - her 2nd pregnancy was announced in May, so assuming they waited the standard 12 weeks or more until making it public that would take us to November. Given she is not all that much a public figure they quite likely waited even longer so she is probably due any day now.

Amazed the gala is a tiara event - loved it!

The dress code for the day events seemed interesting to me - MT in a sort of day sort of evening outfit, Stephanie full on gown, foreign royals a bit of a mix and the other Lux royals very much day dress.

Nice to see so many crowds out for the events

How nice to have a balcony appearance and military tribute in front of the parliamentary building! I don't think that was announced in advance, was it?

From the official journal of legislation:

The Act of Abdication:

"Arrêté grand-ducal du 3 octobre 2025 portant abdication de Son Altesse Royale le Grand-Duc de Luxembourg.
Nous Henri, Grand-Duc de Luxembourg, Duc de Nassau,
Vu l’article 56, paragraphe 4 de la Constitution ;
Luc Frieden
Fait le 3 octobre 2025.
Henri"

And the notice that Guillaume took the oath:

What is being said over the loudspeaker? There is no English translation for this part.

There were spectators waving Nassau standards as well as Luxembourg national flags!

The updated monarchy website uses the "V" on the "Constitutional Monarchy" page but not on the new Grand Duke's biography page. It seems they can't decide themselves whether it should be included...
In a interview with Paris Match Guillaume referred to himself as Guillaume V with the regnal number. He declared that he was the fifth monarch of the House of Nassau named Guillaume.

Today’s program of events will begin at 12:30 p.m. (in about 15 minutes) and will be livestreamed as well. The final events of the day, the drone show and concerts, will begin at 10:34 p.m.

Today’s livestream and the recording of yesterday’s stream:

The program of events for today:

Basic information about today’s program, which will be updated with photos throughout the day:

An overview of yesterday’s events with photos:

The lighthearted short film the livestream played at the beginning was the first of five episodes of the "Direktioun Trounwiessel" web series.

Read more about it and find links to the episodes here:

"A series of five short films titled "Direktioun Trounwiessel" ("Direction: Throne Change") has been released to introduce the sponsors who will accompany the Grand Ducal couple on their festive tour of Luxembourg on Saturday, 4 October.

[...]

Produced by a young Luxembourgish artistic team, the films adopt a lighthearted and humorous approach. They follow a chauffeur from the Grand Ducal Palace as he transports the eight sponsors to their various stops on the day's itinerary.

[...]

The films also trace the journey of a mysterious object – a gift box from the people of Luxembourg – which the sponsors intend to present to the Grand Duke at the final event on the Glacis.

[...]

Through a fluid and rhythmic montage, it incorporates thematic clips from Luxembourgish films of the last 50 years, honouring the artists who have contributed to the national film industry."

The government announcement about the first municipal visit to Grevenmacher, being streamed now:

"HRH the Grand Duke, accompanied by the Minister of the Economy, SME, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, and the Minister for Home Affairs, Léon Gloden, visit the 'Op Flohr' stadium under the theme: 'Sport as a vehicle to highlight voluntary work'. Volunteers and those dedicated to promoting sport and athletes are honoured.

Without the passion and commitment of numerous volunteers, no dynamic community life could exist."

The program of events in Grevenmacher:

In a interview with Paris Match Guillaume referred to himself as Guillaume V with the regnal number. He declared that he was the fifth monarch of the House of Nassau named Guillaume.

Interesting! Is that interview online, or if not, are there articles online quoting it?

ETA: I am glad the live English translation is back! And it is possible to rewind the livestream.

After yesterday's formality, it is a lovely contrast to have this relaxed, down to earth, "bread and butter" visit starting Day 2. And the bonhomie is heartwarming.

I hope the weather is fine for the drones!

Two observations:
It seems King Philippe appeared to have been suffering from a cold or had a cough. I noticed even in the morning videos his dear wife reaching in her Dior purse to hand him a cough drop/lozenge.
Does King Willem-Alexander not own a comparible military suit? King Philippe wore his but King W-A is just in a tux?

Am I right: All the visits of today had an each theme? Now we have seen sports. What are the other themes of the todays visits?

I did see repeatedly coughing during the Abdication Ceremony. I was worried. I hope he is okay.

They've put together a truly fantastic program for the community, especially the open-air events in Wiltz, with concerts, theater, and the long table with food from the local restaurants. It's just a shame the weather isn't cooperating. It's 15 degrees C, very windy and rainy.
The events in Steinfort are taking place indoors, so the weather doesn't play such a big role.
You can see the complete program in the link that was posted by Tatiana Maria.

That's right!
As @hereditarytitles said, even apart from the Grand Duke's visits, the grand celebrations will be available to the public all day in Wiltz, Luxembourg City and Dudelange. From the monarchy's press release:

"Throughout this historic day, three public celebrations will be held simultaneously at the three ends of the country: in Wiltz, Luxembourg and Dudelange. Each of these popular festivities will feature a cultural and entertainment programme reflecting its own identity, along with a public viewing of the Grand Duke's tour, which will unfold from noon until midnight."

More details on the accession website:

Am I right: All the visits of today had an each theme? Now we have seen sports. What are the other themes of the todays visits?

According to the slide before the film started, the theme for the Wiltz visit is "Vivre ensemble", which I suppose translates as "living together."

The stream showed the second episode of "Direktioun Trounwiessel".

About the visit:

"Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess are welcomed by the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture and Minister for Consumer Protection, Martine Hansen, together with the Minister for Culture and Minister Delegate for Tourism, Eric Thill. The Grand Ducal Couple attends a participatory video installation and three musical performances at the amphitheatre of Wiltz Castle."

The program for Wiltz:

12:00

Galleries and videos of today, October 4:

** ppe gallery ** gettyimages gallery 1 ** gettyimages gallery 2 **

If anyone could explain any of the numerous cultural references in today’s films, plays, etc. for the less aware of us, I’d appreciate it.

About the show in Wiltz:

200 representatives of government, representatives of 55 local organizations and 2,000 audience members seems like impressive turnout for a town in a very small country like Luxembourg.

Nice to see a Down’s actress in a prominent role in the theater troupe. (Apparently other actors in the troop were Down’s too, according to the announcer.)

Again Guillaume was introduced as “Grand Duke Guillaume” with no regnal number.

Was the first skit a sendup of curtseying instructions?

Unfortunately the translator mumbled and was difficult to understand at times. But yesterday’s international themes seemed to continue, as many of those “resident Q&A” video clips involved immigrants and foreigners talking about feeling welcomed to Luxembourg, as well as the two immigrants from the USA and China emceeing the show.

Was that the "box" from the web series which finally made an appearance in the Grand Duchess's hands?

About the next visit to Steinfort:

“HRH the Grand Duke visits the Intercommunal Hospital of Steinfort (HIS), accompanied by the Minister for Family Affairs, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception of Refugees, Max Hahn, the Minister of Health and Social Security, Martine Deprez, and the Minister of Finance, Gilles Roth. He meets with healthcare staff and patients, thereby highlighting all those who serve society tirelessly, even in times of celebration.”

Program for Steinfort, where the Grand-Ducal Couple will visit from 4:20 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

16:20

Arrival of HRH the Grand Duke

Hôpital Intercommunal Steinfort - Centre de Jour pour Personnes Âgées - Rue Collard, 8414 Steinfort

16:22

Visit of HRH the Grand Duke to the Steinfort Intercommunal Hospital (HIS)

Hôpital Intercommunal Steinfort - Centre de Jour pour Personnes Âgées - Rue Collard, 8414 Steinfort

In tribute to the kindness and solidarity that characterise society, the Grand Duke will meet with healthcare workers and patients.

Through them, all those who serve society tirelessly, even during the festive season, will be honoured.

Estimated duration of the visit: 40 minutes

18:00

Autumn concert by the "Stengeforter Musek"

Cultural centre „An de Keeseminnen“ - rue Al Schmelz, 8414 Steinfort

Performances by the Stengeforter Musek, the Garnecher Musek, the Harmonie Royale l'Alliance de Sélange (Belgium) and the Harmonie Kleinbettingen.

A Luxembourgish menu will be served.

Online reservations.

ETA: Theme according to the slide: “Resilience – Hommage à la bienveillance et à la solidarité” (Resilience – Tribute to kindless and solidarity).

About the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess’s visit to Dudelange, 5:40-6:40 p.m.

Theme according to the slide in the livestream: “Mouvements” (Movements).

“The Grand Ducal Couple, together with the Minister of Education, Children and Youth, and Minister of Housing and Spatial Planning, Claude Meisch, the Minister of Finance, Gilles Roth, the Minister of Sport and Minister of Labour, Georges Mischo, the Minister for Family Affairs, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception of Refugees, Max Hahn, and the Minister of Health and Social Security, Martine Deprez, attends a vibrant and inclusive walking performance. The production blends dance, acrobatics, freerunning, percussion, circus, different musical genres, spoken word, and feature a remarkable number of artists from Luxembourg and abroad.”

"Before returning to the capital, the Grand Duke will make a stop in the south of Luxembourg. In Dudelange, he will attend a dance performance tracing the transformations of society across the country and the cultural creativity that has flourished on the fertile ground of its industrial past."

(I wonder what the main reason is for the grand-ducal couple to be accompanied by government ministers throughout their introductory tour. Tradition? To emphasize that the monarch shares power with the democratically elected government? So that the positive vibes of the tour are shared with the government?)

The livestream of the visit will presumably be preceded by episode 4 of Direktioun Trounwiessel:

11:00

Am Duerf square - 3465 Dudelange

The street performance certainly sounds interesting.

This is an excerpt from Lux paper "L'essentiel" reporting about the celebrations. I liked this interview with Guillaume where he talks about his love for cooking. That is the first time I hear about a royal who likes to cook (so we have something in common:chef:)
It also says in the article that due to the bad weather they had to cancel two concerts.

Guillaume discussed his love for cooking during his engagement to Stephanie. Paris Match reported that he often tried out new recipes on friends and family.

During his bachelor years he liked inviting friends over to cook for them.

The new Grand Duke is a talented linguist who likes to cook and write and compose his own music.

The Grand Duchy is very lucky to have him, imo.

I think it was around the time their engagement was announced, he said that he would have loved to have been a Chef if he wasn't Grand Duke (Italian Chef, if I recall correctly).

by Tatiana Maria (sorry, I still didn't manage to quote correctly)

I think that is the main reason. IIRC the GD court has more political power than other European courts have. Correct me if I am wrong. The Court and the politicians in Luxembourg are working quite closely together, if it weren't like this the Waringo Report would not have been initiated in the first place.
In addition you have to consider the smallness of that country, a lot of European institutions are installed in Luxembourg City, which is quite remarkable and shows the importance of that small country within Europe.

European institutions located in Luxembourg:

  • European Commission
  • Court of Justice of the European Union
  • European Court of Auditors
  • European Investment Bank
  • European Investment Fund
  • European Stability Mechanism
  • Eurostat
  • Publications Office
  • Translation Centre
  • Executive Agency for Health and Consumers
  • Secretariat General of the European Parliament

Council of Europe

The Council of Europe was founded in 1949 and is the oldest political organisation of the European continent. Luxembourg is one of the ten founding members of the Council of Europe.

The Grand Duchy fervently supports the objectives of this international organisation, which are: the defence of human rights, the guarantee and preservation of parliamentary democracy and the rule of law, the promotion of the development of European cultural identity and tackling problems facing European society.

I sure wish Stephanie's parents had lived to see this day. Perhaps it's not realistic for Count Philippe given how elderly he was at the time of the wedding, but it might definitely have been a possibility for her mother Alix de Lannoy. 💔

Thank goodness her siblings seems to adore their baby sister and showed up for her last night!

It was lovely to see all but one of her siblings and their spouses attend. It did, however, stress how much older they all are: except for Isabelle, they are all in their 50s (and one or more partners might be in their 60s). And even Isabelle is 49, while Stephanie is only 41. The cousins of Charles and Francois also are all much older than the two of them given that in addition to being a much younger sibling, Stephanie was in her mid to late 30s when the children were born.

As Guillaume was even older than Stephanie and the age of the heir seems leading for the time of abdication, I expect a rather long reign (35+ years) for the couple (comparable to Jean’s reign of 36 years). If health allows, I assume they’ll try to wait until Charles is preferably in his early forties before handing over.

Actually 2 of her brothers married in 2006 and 2016 and one has a son born in 2018 so at last one cousin whos is close in age to Charles and Francois

Stephanie's eldest brother is Jehan de Lannoy. He was born in 1966 which makes him,at 59 years old, old enough to be her father.

He was the good looking guy who walked her down the aisle.😉

Exactly, there is an 18 year old age difference (which I am used to as my mother's eldest sister was also 18 years older than her). In addition, even her second youngest sibling, Isabelle, is 10 years older. So, while her other siblings are close in age, she is the outlier.

It was lovely seeing the couple at the events in Dudelange, they seem so easy going with each other without being to PDA. I loved how Stephanie allowed Guillaume to be in a selfie with a member of the crowd before joining in with a huge smile. They seem a breath of fresh air to me.

Starting now: Luxembourg City.

More about the grand finale “ballet of trams”:

“[…] Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie will arrive at 20:05 at the Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte (Philharmonie side) to a rousing orchestral performance. They will lead a procession across the bridge, joined by 1,800 people from all walks of Luxembourg, against the backdrop of a multicoloured ballet of trams. Meanwhile, Luxembourg-born multi-faceted artist Francesco Tristano will give a concert from a raised platform at the end of the bridge (on the Grand Théâtre side), while the tramway conveys, in eight stages, a group of people representing the different components of Luxembourg society. Crowds can look forward to a rich, emotionally-charged performance featuring a number of vibrant tableaux vivants, the narrative thread of which was conceived by Luxembourg writer and playwright Ian De Toffoli.

With this display, the Grand Duke will honour Luxembourg's diverse, deep-rooted and complex society, by meeting with different sections of the population, such as members of civil society, the non-profit sector, the world of sport, nursing staff and the forces of law and order, the cultural and crafts sectors, various trades, businesses and European institutions.”

As with the previous visits, the livestream will preface it with an episode, the fifth and final, of “Direktioun Trounwiessel”. Links to all episodes here:

Comments and questions about the street performance in Dudelange earlier:

Dance was a good choice for a multinational country’s celebration; one doesn’t need to be fluent in Luxembourg’s three languages to enjoy it (I did).

Was the man in the gray shirt and wheelchair who seems to have some kind of mobility disorder a well-known person, since he was at the center of that section of the dance performance on stage?

The announcer referred to the “huge crowd” gathered to meet the grand-ducal couple.

Anyone else find it odd that Gabriel and Noah haven’t been to any of the events?
