Weekly Update to 1st August, 2019

Only five members of the family actually did any engagements this week – The Queen, Charles, William, Catherine and Edward. Between them they did 8 engagements. That comes about because of the way the CC recorded William and Catherine’s Sailing Day. It is recorded as two events – one where they did the sailing and one where they attended the prize-giving. With both of them doing those two engagements it pushed the weekly total out to 8.

I have left out some of the normal things - e.g. overseas engagements as there have been none and I hope to have this as one post this week. The missing sections will return when the royals return to work.

A note about the 3rd and 4th August. Normally when a day is missing The Times records it as 'No Court Circular Today'. However, the Royal Record, which gets its information from The Times has the following message for those two days 'Court Circular Missing - Will Update When it Becomes Available.' For the 5th they have 'No Court Circular today'. The British Monarchy website has nothing for any of these days so I assume there was No CC on the 3rd and 4th. If someone has different information and lets me know I will update accordingly.

Milestones achieved this week: NONE

Approaching a milestone: Harry is approaching his century (98).

Weekly Update to 15th August, 2019

Another very slow week this week. Interestingly the Royal Record has The Queen, Charles and Camilla meeting with the outgoing GG of Australia, Sir Peter Cosgrove and his wife, on the 12th but the British Monarch Website has nothing for the 12th, 13th and 14th and only Anne’s birthday noted on the 15th. Edward was the only other royal to have an engagement this week.

I have also done a check of the Future Engagements on the British Monarchy Website and there is nothing listed at all for the rest of August. There are engagements listed for Anne and others from early September. This is why we are getting so many 'silly' stories at this time of the year - nothing else to report so let's make up a story about something that happens all the time but somehow make it seem unusual.

Again I will only post those sections that involved an actual engagement for the week rather than posting long lists of things with no changes.

Milestones achieved this week: NONE

Approaching a milestone: Harry is approaching his century (98).

Weekly Update to 22nd August, 2019

This was an extremely slow week with only The Queen and Philip having an engagement (one joint engagement). So far there is nothing up on either of my sources for the 20th – 22nd August so I am assuming that it is ‘No Court Circular Today’ for those days. If that changes it will be dealt with in the next update. Again I will only post those sections that involved an actual engagement for the week rather than posting long lists of things with no changes.

Note re my recent health issues – the cardiac specialist has had to change my medication but generally I am now a lot better and will shortly be able to actually start being ‘retired’ Since retiring in April I have either been injured or ill.

Milestones achieved this week: NONE

Weekly Update to 29th August, 2019

This was another slow week. There only reason there ended up being four engagements was the Queen having to hold a Privy Council meeting and also an audience.

I have to thank Princess Larissa for posting the CC for the 28th August (the abovementioned Council meeting) as the British Monarchy Website has left out the 28th August completely. It goes from the 25th to the 30th with nothing in between. That matches my other source, which at this point in time hasn’t anything after the 27th.

Again I will only post those sections that involved an actual engagement for the week rather than posting long lists of things with no changes.

Milestones achieved this week: NONE

Approaching a milestone: The Queen is now approaching her double century (193) and Harry is approaching his century (99).

Weekly Update to 5th September, 2019

This week saw some of the family back to undertaking engagements with a total of 21 engagements during the week. This number will steadily increase over the rest of September in the lead up to the autumn busy season of October and November.

This week saw the first entry in the CC of The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge since it was officially registered following the splitting of the foundation into two organisations as William had two engagements related to it on the 5th September (he received two people in relation to it).

Milestones achieved this week: Harry reached his century

Weekly Update to 12th September, 2019

Most of the family are now back at work with Edward on an overseas trip to Malaysia and Australia, where he is currently undertaking engagements. I was actually supposed to be meeting my brother at the SCG last night to go out to dinner (we often meet there as we are both members and so don’t have to pay for parking on non-match days) but we couldn’t park there last night. When I saw the CC today I realised why – Edward was there for an engagement.

I have seen some reports that Camilla has only done about 67 engagements this year – that is how many days I have had her working. It is really poor of the garbage magazines to compare the number of days on which she has worked with the number of engagements The Queen has done. As you can see from my count I have them working on about the same number of days and doing about the same number of engagements.

As usual the turnout for the Braemar Games was lovely but it wasn’t an engagement in the CC. This is totally normal – as is the non-recognition of anyone other than The Queen (and in the past Philip) at Ascot.

Milestones achieved this week: Edward reached his double century (203)

Approaching a milestone: The Queen is approaching her double century (194)

Weekly Update to 19th September, 2019

Edward spent a large part of this past week in Australia. On the day he returned Sophie left the UK for Kenya. I had a friend whose nephew met Edward in Australia as he had achieved the Gold Award for the Duke of Edinburgh and he did all three levels in a year as he is just 15 and has the Gold Award.

Charles and the Queen are still on holidays in Scotland while the rest of the family are largely back to work. Charles and the Queen do the occasional engagement when on holidays.

Next week will have lots of coverage of Harry and Meghan’s trip to Southern Africa.

Interestingly the British monarch online CC is starting to fall back into bad habits – such as missing days. Instead of updating every day they have taken to updating every two to three days and leaving out days in the process. Fortunately I have another source that has the missing days.

MISSING DAYS from online CC in the past two months: 28th August (day of the Privy Council meeting about proroguing parliament); 13th, 14th and 18th September. By my count they have missed 31 engagements.

Sorry for the delay folks but neither of my sources for the CC have put up the 26th September yet. The British Monarchy website are still only up to the 19th September so over a week behind while my other site is only waiting on the 26th.

Weekly Update to 26th September, 2019

This past week has seen most of the royals out and about with only The Queen and Camilla not seen on official engagements all week from those who regularly undertake duties. Sophie, Charles, Harry and Meghan all undertook engagements overseas.

Beatrice announced her engagement and unlike previous generations that wasn’t recorded in the CC (I was reading a CC from about 15 years ago during the week and that noted the engagement of one of the children of the Duke of Gloucester). The CC is recording a lot less these days in terms of the family doing things.

I must thank VictoriaB who, after reading my earlier post about not having the CC for the 26th September, very clearly PM'd that information to me. I am very grateful for the help.

MISSING DAYS from online CC in the past two months: 28th August (day of the Privy Council meeting about proroguing parliament); 13th, 14th and 18th September. By my count they have missed 31 engagements.

Weekly Update to 3rd October, 2019

This week saw the royals out and about although the Queen is still clearly on her summer holidays. Charles and Camilla had one day of engagements in Scotland while Anne was there for a couple of days.

Harry and Meghan finished their southern African tour. I did find it interesting that although we saw Meghan on most days doing things officially many of those events didn’t make it into the Court Circular. The engagements that did appear seem to have been those announced before the tour but those not announced in advance weren’t classes as official engagements by Her Majesty.

Andrew started his now annual visit to Australia for Pitch@Palace Australia. This event takes place at this time of the year now. I did find the comment by the Premier of WA that they didn’t know Andrew was coming strange considering he was having dinner with the Governor of WA. I would have expected the Premier to have been invited to such a dinner as per normal protocol. Andrew’s visit, as is normal, is largely receiving no coverage. Most Aussies wouldn’t know he comes here annually, as does Edward.

One of the interesting things I came across in the CC was the fact that the UK sends an Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, but Pakistan sends a High Commissioner to the UK. William and Catherine met them both during the week, no doubt in preparation for their upcoming visit. I came across this same situation in relation to Bangladesh when analyzing 1997 but assumed that there was the possibility that between Charles meeting the Ambassador in London and the High Commissioner in Bangladesh that Bangladesh had been restored to the Commonwealth – even though I could find no evidence that they had ever left it. Normally the countries of the Commonwealth call their highest diplomat in each other’s countries a High Commissioner.

A note about MISSING DAYs – who knows maybe someone at BP is reading this as the 28th August is now up on the British Monarchy website

Weekly Update to 3rd October, 2019

One of the interesting things I came across in the CC was the fact that the UK sends an Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, but Pakistan sends a High Commissioner to the UK. Normally the countries of the Commonwealth call their highest diplomat in each other’s countries a High Commissioner.

Actually, this isn’t true. The UK has a High Commission in Pakistan and a High Commissioner. It is currently Thomas Drew
https://www.gov.uk/government/people/thomas-drew
https://www.gov.uk/world/organisations/british-high-commission-islamabad

However, in 1972, Pakistan temporarily withdrew from the Commonwealth, and until it rejoined in 1989, the mission in Islamabad became an Embassy, headed by an Ambassador.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_High_Commissioners_of_the_United_Kingdom_to_Pakistan

I don’t know who on staff was writing the CC on this one, but they made a mistake (not the first time there’s been a mistake in the CC).

This, as I said, also happened in 1997. In fact Charles was meeting with the British Ambassador to Bangladesh in the UK but when he meet the same person in Bangladesh he was called the High Commissioner while back in the UK the Queen was meeting the Ambassador. I have come across it a few times with those countries in the sub-continent where the terms vary depending on whether they are in their homeland or in the UK.

As William and Catherine meet these two people on the same day I don't think it is so much an error but a difference in terminology being used. The CC remember is authorised daily by The Queen regardless of who actually writes it. I suspect she knows the correct terms. The person may be the High Commissioner when in Pakistan but use the term Ambassador in the UK. That means that ALL mistakes in the CC are down to The Queen as she has the final say and has to sign off on it before it is issued. It isn't down to the writers but to the Queen herself.

I now the Pakistan situation from 1972 - 1989. I was actually at the Pakistan Embassy in Canberra with some students on the day they were changing the signs from 'Embassy' to 'High Commission' and saw it happen.

My pleasure.

Amazing what started as a way to deal with my depression following the death of my father in 2011 has turned into my post-retirement interest project. I am almost finished by analysis in 1997 but every time I think I am finished I come up with something else I could add to analyse ... I hope to finally put 1997 to bed during this coming week and then onto 1998.

Now that my health is almost back to full strength, although I still have some heart issues but fairly 'minor' (I know it is still a heart issue but controllable by medication we hope) I am hoping to get to either my university and look at their back copies of The Times pre-1997 to see how much of the CC I can get from them or the State Library of NSW for the same information. The State Library would be the better option as I hope to access it online and for free (well my taxes pay for it) whereas I would have to pay an annual fee at the university.

If anyone has the CC for the 9th or 10th October could they PM me. I can't do a weekly update as neither of my sources have updated since the 8th October.

Weekly Update to 10th October, 2019

Sorry about the delay. One of my two sources is now up to date – including 14th October with the State Opening of Parliament already up. The British Monarchy website is still only up to the 8th September – so about a week behind.

Andrew ended his overseas tour of Australia and the UAE while Anne and Tim went to Japan for the Rugby and Richard went to Morocco.

MISSING DAYS from the British Monarchy online CC in September: 28th August, 13th, 14th and 18th September, 9th and 10th October. Any dates I list as missing are dates for which I have another source.

Milestones achieved this week: The Queen reached her double century (208)

Weekly Update to 17th October, 2019

A busy week with Charles in the Vatican, William and Catherine in Pakistan while Sophie visited Kosovo and Anne and Tim finished their visit to Japan where they attended two of Scotland’s World Cup Rugby matches. It makes me wonder whether either or both of William and Harry will make their way to Japan over the next two weekends to see their nations (Harry – England, William – Wales) play in the semi-finals or in the final or play-off for third.

MISSING DAYS from the British Monarchy online CC in September: 28th August, 13th, 14th and 18th September, 9th and 10th October. Any dates I list as missing are dates for which I have another source.

Milestones achieved this week: Charles (405) and Anne (418) both reached their quadruple centuries, Camilla (201) her double century and Catherine her century (104)

Approaching a milestone: Sophie is approaching her double century while Tim is approaching his half century (43)

*Imran Khan, the current PM of Pakistan was one of the world’s greatest cricketers in the 1980s and 90s. His mother was diagnosed with cancer and there was no cancer facility in Pakistan. Imran spent a lot of the later years of his cricket career and his post-cricket, pre-political career raising the funds to build and improve this facility. It is named after his mother. I remember the 1992 Cricket World Cup matches where there was the chance to make a donation to the cause – and yes I did make a donation. I felt a bit of ownership this week to see William and Catherine visiting a facility that I contributed to seeing built.

Thank you for the update IluvBertie. I know that at times it is difficult for you to obtain the information that you require to continue with your tally, but I admire your perseverance:).

It can be annoying that the sites I use - especially the British Monarchy Website - don't update every day. The British Monarchy site can sometimes be a week late and other times it will be up every day on time. The other site - which is a volunteer site - is more reliable.

I am grateful also for the assistance of some members who, when I ask, will often get me the information I need.

I am also enjoying my retirement and doing an analysis of the years 1997 onwards (and that is a 'fun' year as they have a couple of dates as double ups e.g. in June 1997 they have the 21st and 22nd June as the same series of events and miss Charles doing a one day overseas trip ... the 23rd is listed as Charles 'returning to Brize Norton' which means an overseas day - he did engagements in the UK on the 21st but the 22nd isn't the right one. Hopefully I will be able to access The Times shortly and find out what happened but until I get the all clear from my cardiologist to drive that isn't a possibility as to reach the university I need to get to involves a lot of trains and buses and would take about three hours in each direction (compared to about 30 minutes by car across Sydney).

My hope is that I can go back earlier than 1997 and maybe do the entirety of the Queen's reign or even further back in time.... I know - a weird idea but ...

Weekly Update to 31st October, 2019

This was clearly a school holidays week as the Cambridges and Wessexes weren’t out and about as per normal when they have their children on holidays. I do think it is great that they have that time for their children.

I am always amazed at some of the days the Duke of Kent puts in - 7 visits in one day. Not bad for an 84 year old who had a stroke some years ago.

MISSING DAYS from the British Monarchy online CC: 13th, 14th and 18th September. Any dates I list as missing are dates for which I have another source. It is interesting that three dates (28th August and 9th – 10th October which I had highlighted here last week are now up on the British Monarchy website. I am not taking credit but who knows – someone there may monitor this site and have seen the post and checked things out … I can dream can’t I???
