Dinis seems to be very active as of late! some reigning houses could learn a thing or two...

Infante Dom Dinis de Bragança, Duke of Porto, was invited and attended the initiative of the Porto and Lisbon Football Associations that celebrated the 130th anniversary of the first official football match in Portugal, held as part of the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Infante D. Henrique, a native of the city of Porto.

On Portugal Day, June 10, Infanta Dona Maria Francisca de Bragança and Duarte de Sousa Martins, Duke and Duchess of Coimbra, were consecrated to Our Lady of Lapa, in Sernancelhe, the first Marian sanctuary in the Iberian Peninsula. This historic celebration, which perpetuates the connection between the Royal House of Bragança and the Virgin Mary, was presided over by His Most Reverend Excellency, the Bishop of Lamego.

What is the deeper meaning behind being consecrated to a specific sanctuary of Mary?

It is tradition for members of the Portuguese Royal Family to be consecrated to Our Lady of Lapa.

That's what it said but my question was what it means to be consecrated to a sanctuary of Maria; as a non-catholic I don't understand this ritual.

Last week, Infante Dinis, Duke of Porto, was present at the Mass of the Sovereign Order of Malta during the investiture of new members, namely of the Royal House of Bulgaria, with the ceremony being marked by the presence of many members of the Bulgarian Royal Family.

It simply means to place someone or sonething under the specific care/patronage/protection of the Mother of Jesus.

Thanks! That's still a foreign concept to me, however, if I understand it correctly, the 'sanctuary' itself is irrelevant. So, why aren't they consecrated to Mary herself instead of to a sanctuary dedicated to her?

I am not sure I understand your question?

Unlike the Mother of God, a sanctuary is not able to pray, to intercede or to offer protection.

Even though it is meant to be a sacred space dedicated to worship and prayer, it is not the sanctuary itself that does those things.(worship, prayer, intercession)

So while the consecration itself takes place in a place dedicated to Our Lady, the consecration is TO the Blessed Virgin in whose name it is.

Thanks for the explanation.

The original post seemed to say that they were consecrated 'to the sanctuary' itself, which didn't make sense to me - and clearly it doesn't make sense to you either. Upon reading it again would it be correct to say that they were consecrated to Mary in the form/appearance (what would be the right word?) of 'Our Lady of Lapa'.

Afonso, Dinis, Maria Francisca and Duarte were present last night at Paulo Caetano's 45th anniversary alternative race, which took place at Campo Pequeno, in Lisbon.

Isn’t the Constantinian Order under the sovereignty of the House of Bourbon Two Sicilies? What does Dom Afonso have to do with it?

I assume Maria Francisca and Duarte are members of the order as they are wearing the cape etc but Afonso is not?!
